I give it 2 stars for the location. It’s an ideal place for someone who has never travelled outside of america. If you want to just learn to ride white water for the first time in your life, you will walk away from this place like you accomplished something. This camp does a good job of giving punters the experience of being on a surf board. They fail to teach you really basic things like how to turn your board(while seated on it) and how to turtle dive. Avoid the gaggle of aspiring pro surfers posing as instructors. They WILL take you out on low tide, which is dangerous for newbies. Make sure you look over their rentals boards. I’ve seen a few with ratty tails that were absently passed over to students.

Took a weekend excursion here after traveling to Costa Rica on business back in 2004. As a perpetual surfing beginner, since I seem to only get to surf every few years, I was looking for a laid back place were I could enjoy a few waves, eat good food, and relax. Witche’s Rock Surf Camp was that kind of place. The staff are super friendly, my room had the perfect view of the sunset, and the breakfasts at their cantena started my days off on the right foot. Overall, I had a great time, but three days was not enough. It was, however, the perfect ending to a great trip to Costa Rica.

If you like surfing, the beach, meeting amazing people, eating fresh fish every day, napping, sun bathing, drinking, relaxing, and just generally having a kick-ass time — kids, this is the place to do it. I had the pleasure of going to Witches Rock for 10 days with one of my best friends, and I think both of us will agree it was one of the best experiences we’ve ever had. The beach is surrounded by mountains and about 100 short yards from the camp. Our simple but surf-inspired rooms boasted ocean views from our balcony — perfect for falling asleep to the sounds of crashing waves after a long day of surfing and relaxing. The hotel staff and instructors were awesome; after only a day there you can’t walk through the place without someone high-fiving you and calling you by some inevitably cheeky nickname(mine was ‘stitches’, in honor of the head injury I endured). Ah, but do not be scared by some battle scars, the ER is just a few yards away and even the doctor there made me feel comfortable. I could go on and on about all the wonderful things you’ll probably experience at Witches Rock, but I guess I’ll end this with the quality of the people you’ll probably share the courtyard and lots of Imperial’s with for your stay. For the most part(of course there are always exceptions) I’d say the kind of people you’ll find here will probably make your trip what I hope would be just as amazing as mine. Meaning, they enjoy the things listed above, maybe even a few more scandalous(but all the more fun) things as well… and ultimately, are looking to experience some time off from the real world in a little slice of paradise.

Bad arse. (A trip ago) they picked me up from airport and droved me to Tamarindo to their remodeled hotel. They have everything but a good selection of boards(3 yrs ago). People that work there are awesome. A place to eat, drink, chill and they cart you off to several different breaks with a guide depending on your level. I did do the Witch’s Rock & Ali’s Point boat trip. Awesome but bring a lot of food, water and extra leash :) Tamarindo is cool small lil village /town but make sure you get out and explore other towns i.e. Nosara.

Spent almost 3 weeks in Costa Rica of which one was spent here surfing at Witch’s Rock. For anyone who wants to get away for an awesome surf vacation, go here. This place is seriously the best place I’ve been in a long time. For the beginner surfers there is the camp in which you are taken out each day with instructors who are kick ass local surfers. They are awesome instructors that give great instruction and are just fun as hell to hang out and party. The place is not for the luxury-seekers. For that go elsewhere. Here, it’s all about the surf! The rooms are small and have the bare minimum amenities. But, you have a selection of about 50 surfboards to take out whenever you want, and you are just steps to one of the best beach breaks in the world. An outstanding bar and grill is on the premises. Serves a delicious breakfast which is included in your room rate(look out for the scrambler! yum! Then you just keep hanging and have lunch and mas Imperials and Pina Coladas! I love this place– it’s my heaven. The staff is just the best staff I have encountered in ages. Costa Ricans(Ticos and Ticas) are the nicest people in the world and I love how they happily help you improve your spanish! The location is perfect. For the more advanced surfers you go out by van or boat to different locals, such as Witch’s Rock and Ollies Point. I cannot say enough good things about Witch’s Rock. We are already planning our return trip to meet back up with new found friends. Pura Vida!!!
