I really trust Mailoha A. when it comes to reviews and I’d been looking for good, quick, cheap Chinese takeout for awhile now. On my way home from a golf outing at Lake Jovita, I made a special trip to Perry’s BBQ for a late lunch. Let me first state that this was the first time I had visited University Mall since another famous fellow Unilocal Elite in Tampa actually worked in the Victoria’s Secret store.(She will remain anonymous unless she chooses to come forward) That was a long, long, LONG time ago and clearly I’m not alone in abandoning trips to that mall in the last 15 years because the mall basically looks abandoned. I visited at 2pm on a Monday and these mall parking lots looked emptier than when Doctor Emmett Brown and Marty McFly were initially testing the time machine overnight at Twin Pines(later, Lone Pine) Mall in the original Back to the Future movie. The key to visiting Perry’s BBQ is finding the new Studio Movie Grill and parking on the second floor of the garage as close to it as you can. SMG looks really nice and I guess they are taking a chance on cheap rent to find success in this horrible location.(Sorry, but I only go see movies at night and I would never get out of my car in this mall after dark.) Seriously, there was a panhandler roaming the food court asking me for spare change. I expect that outside a drug store or gas station in certain areas, but why is someone allowed to do this within feet of where businesses are serving food inside a mall? Blocking out everything else negative about this trip, I focused on just getting my food and getting the hell out of there. It worked. For $ 8.15, I left there with a takeout box that wouldn’t even close properly because it was so full. Three different types of chicken and while I should have gotten plantains as my side, I found plenty of flavor in the noodles this time. Virtually every single piece of the chicken was really good in terms of taste, texture and how it looked. Nice employees taking my order as well, offering to let me try virtually anything before putting it in my box. The end result was a really good lunch and 1⁄3 of the box left for another meal later tonight or tomorrow. Yes, I wish Perry’s BBQ was at West Shore or International or had a truck traveling around the streets of Tampa. However, maybe the portions are so big and their food is so cheap because of their rent and location. Next time, I’m not only bringing my golf buddy to enjoy their food too… but simply to have power in numbers when walking from my car to the food court and back.

The food is tasty and the customer service is great — they are super nice and quick. Portions are great! #portionpolice ;) You get your money’s worth so don’t be greedy, share a plate with your buddy ;) This is my favorite Chinese takeout place right now. I just wish it wasn’t at University Mall!

I have to give Perry’s five stars. When I want Chinese food, this place is worth the drive to University Mall. The food is always fresh and everything tastes good. I like the fact that the chicken and bbq ribs actually taste like they came off the grill. Another huge plus to this place is that the portions are large enough to share or eat on throughout the day. It’s cheaper than any other Chinese restaurant I’ve been to for the amount of food you get. The staff here is always friendly and you feel like they truly appreciate your business. They will also allow you to sample any and every item before you decide to buy without any problem at all. Your order is boxed right in front of you and they’re constantly refilling their station with hot steaming food as you wait in line.

Perry’s BBQ serves Chinese food and it is located in the food court at University Mall. There are so many food choices in the food court but we decided to eat here since it looked the busiest– which is always a good sign. We ordered a 3 item combo Bourbon Chicken, Orange Chicken, fried rice, and crab rangoons. The food was surprisingly good and they give you a HUGE portion enough to share with 3 people. Just looked at the photo I included. Both chicken dishes were very flavorful and juicy. The fried rice was also good and flavorful. Crab rangoon were ok– great with the sweet and sour sauce. You can’t beat a yummy lunch(or dinner) you can share for under $ 10 including a drink. Way better than Panda Express! LOL.
