Rocky Point Golf Course

Average golf course (for Florida standards) but excellent value = Very Good review
Pros: Nice 18 hole course with good distance, was laid out well, had plenty of water hazards, decent sand traps, mature trees, nice club house (with grill for food and beverages). Carts all seems new and ran excellent. People were friendly and accommodating. Saw a few alligators on the course (which was a treat since I’m from Michigan)!
Cons: Some of the tee boxes and small sections of some greens could use more tending. The area is a little rough (near Busch Gardens in Tampa).
Great last minute deals on golf web sites like golfnow and teeoff make this course a steal (near 50% off). I’d play there every week if I lived close.

Guess it makes sense that my 500^th review is about a golf course.
Rocky Point is one of three courses owned by the Tampa Sports Authority and they are more for recreational players than for experienced golfers.
The city of Tampa recently invested $ 740,000 to renovate Rocky Point and even the Mayor came out for a ceremony to hit a tee shot to commemorate and bring attention to the completion of this project.
This is one of the reasons I hosted my most recent golf tournament at the course, with the other being its convenient location near Lee Roy Selmon’s restaurant where we had our post-​golf dinner party.
New golf carts were part of the investment, although they are all without windshields, club canopies or GPS. Therefore, this is no place to be if it rains, which it fortunately did not for us.
None of that ¾ of a million dollars were spent on the parking lot, which is in dire need of repaving, or the practice areas. The range has always been way too small and was «Mats Only» on the day of my event. (Hitting golf balls off mats is a waste of time in my opinion and one of many reasons I think TopGolf is the worst thing to happen to golf since that Kiwi snoozer Michael Campbell beat Tiger Woods in the 2005 US Open at Pinehurst).
Rocky Point is a Par 71 (there are three Par 3’s on the back nine) and it plays just 5761 from the white tees and 6351 from the blue tees. Slope is under 120 from both sets of tees confirming this is an easier layout.
While the renovation clearly did some good and necessary things for the property (such as completely cleaning up the Par 3 16^th), my tournament had to alter the scorecard to not even use the 18^th hole for scoring. The green has been completely lost and two other greens early on the back nine are also in very bad shape.
While I appreciate PGA professional Jim Garrison admitting to these problems when walking the property with me in preparation for my event, I wish the rate we were charged to play the course would have been adjusted due to the condition of those particular greens. Basically, we were charged the same 18 hole rate if the course had been perfect and if I had just played as my own foursome that day. No group discount at all.
Normally when I bring a large group of players for a tournament/​outing, I’m given a break on the «rack rate’ and/​or other perks as a thank you for my business. This was not the case at Rocky Point. While Mr. Garrison did pay special attention to me the day of our event, I have been treated like a more valued client at every other property for my tournaments. TSA and Rocky Point also did nothing to promote my event, despite me sending them the proper materials to do so on multiple occasions.
Thanks to me getting creative with the format, scorecard and giving out tons of prizes afterwards at Lee Roy Selmon’s, all my golfers enjoyed the event and hopefully feel good about the fourth tournament I’ve hosted in just seven months.
Unfortunately, if the TSA wants my business going forward, they need to do much more for me and my golfers to bring us back. Especially when I have so many other properties in the Tampa Bay Area who have and are offering me a better deal with marketing and promotional support.

ABSOLUTE worst golf course in Tampa!!! I played here once when I first moved here 2 yrs, went back again today for a quick last minute round bc it’s close and remember why I never returned after my first visit. Horrible conditions, horrible guest service (and I’m a easy guy to please) and I guess since they are the only course with a 10 mile radius they can be pompous and arrogant as they want.

Not an overly challenging muni course, but it is close to home and the office and very cheap to play a quick round.
The fairways are fairly narrow with a couple of bordering streets and residential areas but not too bad. I have definitely seen better maintained courses but this is a municipal course and overall not that bad. The people working the course have always been very friendly.

It was a great golf course located right next to TPA airport. You can watch the planes take off and imagine where they will be headed. The course has a good mix of par 3s and par 5s. It has a narrow fairway which requires a strong game out of the box. The price was affordable and the club house was a nice bonus as well.

Had a nice afternoon here on a crisp Tampa day. We snagged a good deal on a Sunday afternoon tee time. The course is easily accessible and is right next to the airport.
It had rained the previous day and we quickly learned the course did not drain well. There were puddles everywhere and sandtraps were more like lakes. The tee boxes were pretty torn up. The greens were decent.
Their driving range needs a bigger net. While we were on the tenth green two balls from the range nearly hit us. The course is so close together that there were people from other holes constantly jumping over to get their ball. We were nearly hit several times.
Decent course, but not fun when you’re constantly watching out.

The course was in pretty good shape. The sand and fairways were below average but for the price it was still a good deal. The greens were in good shape This is a good course for beginners or people trying to work on their game with out losing loads of balls. There is very little in the way of water hazards and the fairways are wide open. Make sure you come warmed up because it is a bring your own ball driving range
An enjoyable course for a muni. Nice layout with tees for all levels of play. Nice bent greens where you could make putts. Not your typical Florida course with lateral hazards on every hole, which allows you to play your wayward shots as opposed to reloading from the tee and losing golf balls. Decent variety of holes with only an occasional forced carry. Reasonable rates and walking is allowed. Worth trying

Wide open muni that gets a lot of play. Great location but it also draws every yahoo within the Tampa area. Okay track, but not overly challenging.

Not a bad little course close to South Tampa. I’d recommend for a impromptu game or an afternoon beer drinking session. Play in the winter, it’s hot with little shade in the summer

This is a par-​71 course at 6300 yds. It is one of three municipal courses in Tampa. It is in generally good shape and gets a lot of play due to its high visibility & its location near the airport. Greens are overall average to good, but inconsistent from hole-​to-​hole. There is water on about a dozen holes. It is fun to play, but is a little overpriced.
They also have a driving range with limited-​flight balls.

It is kept well, and I believe it is the closest public driving range to downtown. Slicers stay left as it parallels a road.
