Horrifying service. First of all, my neighbor and I were the ONLY customers there at 7:30PM on a week night? That’s a little more than scary… but we thought we would stay and see if any other customers would be coming in since it was dinner time. NOPE, no one came in. We had to find out waiter 3 times to get a glass of water and to ask him if we could order. Food wasn’t great at all. Even though it’s really convenient to my home, I will travel for better food and service the next time I want Sushi. No wonder we were the only customers there in a busy strip mall.

Biggest disappointment I’ve experienced in a long time. We were starving and was excited to check out this 4 star sushi place down the street. The 3 of is ordered 6 different rolls. 4 out of 6 of them all came out just about the same. No special flavor, everything was so blah. Their ginger smelt like wet rag, what a let down that I couldn’t even enjoy my sushi with ginger. The server was cold and every time he dropped something off, we got a wiff of his fishy smelling hands! Boyfriend got the udon and that was just about the most mediocre thing we tried. This place is pricey, boring, smells bad and seems dirty. Definitely wasn’t worth our $ 70 bill. Would never try again, talk about a waste of money. Couldn’t believe it has 4 stars!!! Don’t waste your time & money

Decided to purchase a deal through Living Social for this place and it was a great idea. We came here after hanging out with some of my girlfriend’s friends during Gasparilla. It was quiet as we entered and decided to sit at the bar in front of the chef. A bit pricey for what we had but the portion sizes made up for it. Would come back if given the chance to.

We recently went back to Sushi Hayashi, after buying the Living Social deal, and it was great. We’d been once before, and had liked it well enough. This time was much the same — quiet, even on a Friday night, with very fresh and delicious fish. We ordered seaweed salad, miso soup, some sashimi, and a few rolls to share. Everything was delicious. I recommend this place for sure. Like I said in my earlier review, it’s a little pricey… But, it’s sushi. You have to pay top dollar for the freshest fish. I hope they do Living Social/Groupon deals more often — I’d buy them every time!

Very good sushi place. It doesn’t look like much from its location in the run down strip mall but take a chance and you’ll be wonderfully surprised. The Jalapeño Bomb is awesome! They also have all the regular rolls and a great selection of specialty rolls.

Went over for a quick bite around 3:00pm no one was there so service was pretty swift. Had the Tuna Tataki, crispy Crawfish sushi and the jalapeño bomb, all of course were, great choices. The restaurant is located in a lifeless strip mall but should not deter you from trying. They were playing lounge blues music in the background, which was different, did not bother me too much. As for the service it was without delay. I love it when the staff is engaging and smiling but understand sometimes there are cultural differences and language barriers. What comes natural to the western world is sometimes a little more difficult for some. So with that said I will most certainly will have a go at it again next time in the area.

Went there on a Saturday for dinner; won’t be going back. We started off with the gyoza and spring rolls which were not that great. The menus had pictures, instead of descriptions, not a fan of this since there are«different» sushi rolls and you can’t really see what’s in the roll. The waiter was not very friendly; he was not welcoming or even attentive. Our sushi was ok but we’ve definitely had better; the place was completely empty when we were there; and the hours are strange so I highly recommend calling before you go. Overall a mediocre experience you can definitely have better service and sushi somewhere else.

It’s Good but not Great. It was worth the money. I had basic tuna, salmon, and white tuna rolls. The rolls were large and the taste was good. I’ve had better, but I would definitely go back if I was close and craving Sushi. It’s worth a visit to try for yourself.

This place has decent sushi. I have been coming here for a while. Wookie and his brother own the place and will provide you with great service. When you order I would just ask Wookie to make you a plate of whatever is fresh. I have never gone wrong that way.

Taking a respite from Cubans, we decided to go for sushi. I typed«sushi» in the Unilocal search box with my zip code and searched for a restaurant I’ve never been before. Sushi surprise! We found Sushi Hayashi. It’s located in a fairly vacant strip mall on the corner of Sheldon and Hillsborough. When my wife saw it was two doors down from La Hacienda Mexican restaurant, she tried to talk me out of sushi. I was strong.(look for a La Hacienda review tomorrow :) The atmosphere is typical casual sushi, but the music was 80s top 40. I’m a child of the 80s and love the stuff, but not with my sushi. They really need to rethink their music selection. It just clashes with the Japanese flower flags and jade cat. I loved the menus with pictures. I eat with my eyes. I ordered a couple of appetizers and a few cooked rolls. The edamame was $ 4 and they brought a small plate, but it was nice and hot. I liked it. The spring rolls and gyoza followed the same Lilliputian theme, but were also good. Think Japanese tapas with prices to match. The cooked rolls were very good. The Crunch roll has fried chicken and beef, a cooked sushi lover’s dream roll. The Tampa and Mexican rolls were nice and warm. I’m a fan of their cooked sushi. I’m knocking one star off though for the service. Our server wasn’t very friendly, which in and of itself is not a deal breaker for me, but he dropped the food off and didn’t check on us. It was hard to get him back for another soda(which comes in cans so that means additional sales) and it took a while to order a second Crunch roll. The place was empty. One more customer at the sushi bar and us, so I don’t get it. They need to work on that. The cooked sushi was good enough for me to declare I’m coming back someday. I hope the waiter is in a better mood, or at least is paying a little more attention.

Ahh, I really really wanted to like this place. It has great reviews, I love sushi, and I had a Groupon! What more could a girl want? A lot, apparently. Admittedly, I’m pretty picky about sushi– and this sushi was SO bland. The rice had no flavor and the fish didn’t taste fresh. As a matter of fact, it was slightly room temp, like it had been sitting out. I shouldn’t have even taken the chance with eating lukewarm sushi, but I did… and my stomach paid for it the next day! I really had high hopes, but after that experience, I won’t be back.

I also came here through groupon and was very pleased. This was the best sushi I’ve ever had! We ordered the kosher supreme and mexican rolls. So delicious! the place was also very nice and clean, and the staff very friendly.

sushi was excellent. Waiter was new and did not know the menu all that well. kinda awkward. Perhaps they should fill him in before he started? Just a suggestion. He was real nice. It was the slowest sushi making i had ever witnessed. And we were only 1 of 2 tables there??? i mean it took 10 min per roll. so we had one roll at a time delivered. so it sat until our other party members roll came in. then they both sat until the other one came in so on and so forth… until all the rolls were there at the table at least 30 min just having rolls sit there. Really slow, but again… Tasty! We were not in a rush. would have given 4 stars if it were not for the issues i outlines above.

We moved to Tampa about a year ago and have been searching for the perfect sushi place ever since with no luck. I’m not a big sushi eater but my boyfriend would eat it every meal for the rest of his life if he could… he said this is the best eel he’s EVER had and the rest of his sushi was superb. Everyone who goes here is a regular – we were approached by two different couples welcoming us; one had been coming to Sushi Hayashi for ten years. There are apparently only three employees, all family, who have this sushi business down pat. I had the beef teriyaki and it was the best I’ve ever had as well… and from what we were told, Mama makes it fresh in the kitchen! You should DEFINITELY try this place if you’re considering it. We won’t be getting sushi from anywhere else in Tampa anymore!

The best sushi in Tampa Bay! It is the best kept secret around, hidden in a little strip center off of Sheldon and Hillsborough. My favorite here sushi rolls which you will be hard pressed to find anywhere better are called Jalapeño bomb, tuna supreme, and my wife’s favorite lobster roll. Great sushi no matter what you like!

This is a small sushi place tucked away in the corner of small plaza. The inside is very pleasant, a place you can sit around in and talk after eating. The staff was very friendly and pretty good on service. Their menu is the usual Japanese restaurants you find around town. You will find sushi rolls, hand rolls to nigiri sushi and sashimi. Their sushi is fresh and taste very good. They also have a small section of korean cuisine from the short ribs to marinated beef. The one thing that makes me come back to this place is the eel with rice. I haven’t found that many places around that have it on the menu so I’m glad I found it here.
