It’s hard to find a good outfitter shop and doubly hard to find one when you onsite. Mudd-N-Flood has served us for 12 years at least as our go to shop when we are in the area and need a piece of gear replaced or added to our kit. it’s a small shop that’s packed with stuff and they tend to let you look around and then ask if you need help with anything, I like that! I hate going into a shop and having a sales person act lice a second shadow and make comments about everything I look at or pick up. I just leave and don’t spend any money when they do. Advice, they have it if you ask and it’s good advice. Never have they tried to steer me towards something they had in stock when I’ve asked about a piece of gear. Not unless I ask what they have will they show me something, yet I get great info on the item in question. Shop here! Support your local shops where you can go in and look at and handle stuff before you buy it. Or they will all be gone and you’ll be stuck getting stuf you don’t like off the interwebs…

I stopped by to pick up a sleeping bag pad. I was in the back room where the pads where located for over 10 minutes, patiently waiting for someone who worked there to hopefully answer a few questions. When no employees were in sight, I searched the store & finally found a man chatting behind the counter. He quickly got up from his chair when I asked if anyone was working here. He was friendly & answered my questions & offered a discount on one of the pads. I was still undecided so I stated I would return in a few hours. When I returned, his wife was working. She immediately stated that she had to leave soon(it was 15 minutes until the posted closing time). When I inquired about the discount, she seemed displeased but offered 10% on the expensive pad. I decided to go with a cheaper pad instead. This is when things got weird. Instead of letting me purchase the pad I had wanted, she grabbed another. When I stated it wasn’t the one I was looking at, the woman insisted it was the same pad but different packaging. I should be able to choose the product I want! I find it inappropriate for a salesperson to choose for me. I was pretty upset. I’ll be going back tomorrow to place a complaint against the woman.

Great locally owned shop, 20+ years in Taos, plenty of great quality gear for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurists. There’s even a wine shop next door where you can taste some local wines.
