I attended yoga classes a few years ago at this rec center and it was hardly a rec center at all — a barren weight room, an empty studio, and needed some major TLC. And that’s exactly what it has gotten. I stopped in when I randomly stumbled across their website and thought I’d go in to see what they had done to it. They’ve remodeled basically the entire thing — brand new flooring downstairs, a new cardio room upstairs(4 treadmills, 5 ellipticals, 2 stairmasters, 4 – 5 stationary bikes, a spinning bike), a full weight room, a stretching room(different weights, medicine balls, steps, bands), new basketball court, and revamped locker rooms that have a sauna. Here’s the #1 reason I signed up — it’s reasonable and they have childcare. Gyms that include childcare are ridiculously expensive 99% of the time and honestly, it’s been what has held me back from joining one. But, at the TRC, childcare is $ 10 a month on top of your $ 13 a month membership(if you’re a Taylor resident) or $ 20 a month membership(if you’re a non-resident). My son is 3 and loves going to the«gym.» They have an enclosed and locked childcare area with a staff member supervising, so you can work out in peace one floor above them. The place is pretty spotless and almost every time I’m there, someone is cleaning something. There are always at least 3 – 4 people at the desk when you walk in every day and at least 2 – 3 more people walking around cleaning and checking on equipment. All of the staff is helpful, nice, and have been great to us. I go in the mornings most of the time and there are usually quite a few other people there, but it’s not overcrowded and the vibe is absolutely non-competitive and comfortable(more so than any gym I’ve ever been to). The only downside is that the hours are a little weird with being closed in the middle of the afternoon M-F. They run from 6:30−12 and then open back up from 4:30−9pm.The track is also dated, but being replaced, and they just put up flat screens all around it so you can watch tv while you walk/run if that’s your thing. They also haven’t hired a personal trainer yet, but they’re in the process.
