Yesterday was the first time I have volunteered at Tumbleweed, another team where I work comes here often and I was able to join them to assist in the yearly barbecue. Tumbleweed is a great non-profit organization that offers homeless and struggling teenagers a hand up, not just a hand out. They offer meals, showers, clean clothes, opportunities to get a GED, take classes, and receive counseling. So many of these teens are fleeing environments that are unsafe or unwelcoming and Tumbleweed gives them the support they need. We had a wonderful time meeting everyone, cooking up burgers and hot dogs, packing up to go bags because for most they don’t know where or when their next meal will come from. The staff and teens were so welcoming and grateful and it felt amazing and heartbreaking at the same time. As a Mom I couldn’t imagine not knowing that my children were safe, if they were going to have food to eat or somewhere to sleep at night. Tumbleweed is a light in the community, doing what they can to assist these teenagers to become happy and productive adults. They can always use volunteers and donations especially during the cold weather of sweaters, jackets sleeping bags, socks and shoes as they do not offer housing except some temporary pet care. It is the«season of giving» but wouldn’t it be great if that season lasted all year around just as the need does.
