Took my cousin for lunch. He was like kevin… this place is gonna suck. I asked him why, he said«the place looks so run downed and old». I told him the best places were the old one expierenced restaurant owners are the best. Sure enough the fish was perfect. The fries were golden crispy. They were a little too oily but other than that it was really good. I definitely recommend to anyone that wants something fried.

When I moved to the area I was amazed to find an Alfie’s fish and chips. My dad used to take my sisters and I to the one in Pasadena for fish and chips when we were young kids. The only difference is, the one in Pasadena used to wrap the fish and chips in newspaper just like they do in England. We thought that was cool. The Texas City store doesn’t do that but the fish and chips are just as good as I remember. Much better than Long John Silvers and very reasonably priced. The kids that work there nice and friendly. If you like Long John Silvers you will like Alfie’s and they have much more on the menu and great prices.

Dont bother with Alfies. Batter tastes like nothing but burnt fry oil that is way past it’s change date. The seafood platter had very little actual seafood in it. Mostly it’s old fry crumbs piled high on top of a couple small unrecognizable shrimp, and two fish sticks. I don’t think there is a fish in existence that Alfies wouldn’t ruin. Do yourself a favor and dine at a real restaurant. Seriously, I spent around 17 dollars on one seafood platter here. I tossed it and opted for Ramen noodle cup. You were warned!

Yet another that I had very high hopes for. I was pretty let down. My food was dripping in grease and very bland. Zero seasoning whatsoever on the fish and fries. The tables were unclean and I felt I was being rushed while ordering(even though we were the only people there).

Took a quick lunch and found this place down the street from the job and thought I would try it out. Ordered the clam strip dinner. They cooked it to order and was nice and hot. Clams were done just right, not over done and rubbery or under cooked. Fries were nice and hot and came with a fried dough. The only negative thing I can say about the meal is they put a bunch of those batter crumb nerds all over the basket, which made it hard to dig for the clams. If you must put them On the bottom, please! Comes check this place out if your in Texas City, Texas area. Right on the main drag, you’ll love it,

Great hot fried fish, shrimp, hush puppies and fries. Been going here since I was a kid and love it. Stuffed crab is great as well and I love the coleslaw even better than Long John Silver’s. I get that nostalgic feeling of the late 60’s every time I go as the décor has remained nearly the same. Nothing fancy here as it was the original fast food fish and chips. The Best.

Quite good. If you like fast food fish, such as Long John Silver, this is definitely a great option for Texas City! And the customer service was outstanding!

Not a bad little restaurant that’s obviously been here for a while. I came on a weekday lunch and there were only a few people here. I ordered the 2 piece fish combo which came with fries and a biscuit. The biscuit is similar to the donuts at the Chinese buffets. The fries are your standard crinkle cut ones. The cod fish was nicely breaded and tasted pretty good. I also ordered a side of 6 fried oysters, but these were the most disappointing part of the meal. They were well done and tasted a bit freezer burned. My bill was 11.34, which is higher than normal here for lunch, but it was nice change from fast food. Don’t expect to find any healthy options here, its all fried.

If you’re going to eat a bunch of fried food that’s not good for you, do it right and go here. The fried fish is terrific. Fried shrimp is okay. The hushpuppies are out of this world. It’s a total caloric bomb, and I was happy to have it in my belly. The restaurant is a throwback to the 70’s and does smell a bit of cigarette smoke. But the fish was hot, straight from the fryer, and for a few minutes I felt like a kid out to get fish & chips with mom & dad back in the day. Then it was time to go back to work.

Been going since I was a child. The best shrimp and fish around, big portions and friendly staff. Alfie’s never disappoints. The fried clams are also delicious. Make it Southern and order a side of fried okra. The coleslaw is the best in town. Don’t forget to add a stuffed crab… also, don’t tell your Cardiologist(only fried food served here).

Hit and Miss. Sometimes its great, sometimes its not very good. i guess it depends on the person cooking, or the freshness of the food. Im not sure, just give it a try and you may have a good meal. ill tell you this though, its way better than Long John Silver.

I really wanted to leave this place raving. It was, after all, to be my culinary highlight of a week long vacation, which includes a cruise to Mexico. And, Alfie’s Fish & Chips also has a fond place in my childhood memory. Perhaps I set myself up for disappointment looking so forward to it for the past few weeks. Now, on to the review… ATMOSPHERE: This restaurant is housed in the original cookie-cutter building. It looks exactly the same as every Alfie’s restaurant did in the 1970s. Despite its age, and obvious cigarette smoke stains on the faux British art on the walls(yes, this location still has ashtrays at every table), it still felt clean. Really, no complaints here. In fact, it brought back some memories. SERVICE: The young man at the counter treated us like he owned the place, and that we were the only customers. He was extremely polite and helpful. The food took about 10 minutes to be prepared, but I’m great with that because it pretty much means the food is served fresh — and it was. FOOD: For $ 8.49 I ordered the combination dinner: fish, shrimp, fries, hushpuppies, a roll(more on that later) and a serving of cole slaw. The fish: These are nice little fillets and mine were served hot and crispy. After the first bite, I was madly in love. The batter has just a very slight hint of sweetness and is delicious with malt vinegar. The love was still there after bite number two. But bite three had me just really liking it. By the time I wrapped up my meal to hit the road, I could feel the oil running through my veins, and my friendship with the main attraction here was over. The bottom line, grease doesn’t exactly drip off the fish, but trust me — it’s in there! The shrimp: The ones included in my combo platter are about 21 – 30 count size, which is the norm for fast food fish joints. The flavor was good. They were cooked perfectly. A major caveat though, these little shrimp also hold their fair share of oil. The fries: Very good. They serve the crinkle cut version here, which happens to be one of my favorites. Why don’t more restaurants serve these? The hushpuppies: Also very good. They are round and look similar to the 2-inch versions at Long John Silver’s. Alfie’s version has jalapenos. Nice. The roll: Have you ever eaten those sugar topped fried(canned) biscuits at a Chinese buffet? Well, minus the sugar, that’s what Alfie’s serves as a ‘roll’. Actually, these are a guilty pleasure for me. I really like them, but they will raise your cholesterol levels. The cole slaw: This was the only part of my meal that wasn’t fried, and I highly recommend it. The cabbage is chopped(instead of tiny shreds) and the dressing is creamy and sweet. It was really good. BOTTOMLINE: If you are jonesing for some 1970s nostalgia — this is the place. The fish and chips are really good, with plenty of those batter ‘crunchies’ included. But, I wouldn’t suggest ordering more than 1 – 2 pieces. Why? Well, if you’ve ever had a bad hangover and swore you’d never drink again. .. this is pretty much how I felt about the fish and shrimp.(Which means I’ll probably come back here before the end of the week and ignore my own advice!)

I don’t normally like a lot of fried food, but Alfie’s surprised me by how good the food actually was. I get the chicken combo, but I’ve tried the fish there as well. Some places that I go to have a lot of batter than actual substance, but every time I’ve been to Alfie’s, I’ve always had large pieces of actual chicken/fish as well as a generous portion of fries. When I’m in town, if I’m ever craving chicken strips or fried fish, this is the place I go. The shrimp is really good too. Also, the counter staff has always been friendly and seem to be very easygoing. They make you feel welcomed and are willing to help in any way. Oh! They also have fried cheesecake. I don’t know of any other place that sells that, but it is delicious! Try it!

Visited on 10/2, early evening. We saw some good reviews on another site and took a chance. Steve W. stated it’s been around for a long time and one can tell it has. Nothing fancy, which means absolutely nothing. We’ve had some of the BEST food at THE most modest looking places. The fish was meaty and fresh and not greasy. This was the first time I tried fish with malt vinegar and I liked it! The fries were fresh — so glad these people change their fryer oil. Not expensive with decent food. We’ll go there again.

Alfies has been in Texas City since the 1970’s, when it was part of a nationwide franchise chain that has all but dissappeared. This location is locally owned and operated and specializes in a very American version of a UK inspired Fish and Chips. I make this distinction because I have brought people from the UK here and have learned that someone seeking an authentic UK experience will be dissappointed here. Even though the food here is great, it is not exactly how they do it in the UK. More on this later — for now I will examine why I like this restaurant: Alfie’s specializes in fried fish and chips. They are served with french fries and a roll, and the Alfies signature«chips» which is the crunchy batter that breaks off in the cooking process. The intent is to serve it over the fish, soak it in vinegar and sprinkle with salt. This is a very popular method of serving fried fish and this place has a very loyal group of followers. In addition to fish, you can order items like shrimp, clam strips and stuffed crab. The stuffed crab is excellent and I recommend that you add one to your order, it rivals stuffed crabs in the top restaurants. They recently added menu items like steak and chicken finger baskets. These are hand battered, unique baskets that happen to be the only place in town where they are served. Stand out side items include stuffed jalapenos and spicy hush puppies. In the UK, «Fish and Chips» consists of a certain recipe — beer battered fish served with french fries and with malt vinegar over everything. Let me be clear, in the UK, «chips» mean french fries. A typical Brit, hearing that these baskets are authentic is going to be very upset when they find a very Americanized version of Fish and Chips. The good news is that, like most things American, Alfies version of Fish and Chips far surpasses the original UK version. In case you have never been to the UK — the food is very bland and if it is authentic UK fare, it really means that it does not taste good. This is why Indian food is so popular in the UK, where they love curry. It is because the original local options are so bland. A UK person inside of Alfies will be sneering and letting loose with all sorts of dry, sarcastic comments mean to explain how the food is certainly not authentic. Authentic, no — but Alfies is much better in every way. This is a small restaurant that has a busy take out counter. There are several tables and dining in is fine — but do not expect a wait staff or anything more than a basic experience. However — the food is good and the counter staff are very friendly and will help you decide what you want. In closing, if you are looking for a great place to enjoy fried fish at its best — this is it. If you are from the UK and wanting to reproduce what you have back home, you need to prepare yourself for a completely different — and better experience. Welcome to America.
