I love this chair. I can remember it since I was a child. It is the best thing about Thomasville. To me, it represents the furniture foundation of the city and all the laborers that made Thomasville what it is today. It’s big, it’s wonderful, and it’s a thing of beauty.

It’s large and in charge! Hey it’s a large chair, it’s roadside attracition kitsch at its finest. If you are passing through and into this sort of thing take a moment and check it out. We were glad we did.

Um, yeah. This is one big chair. While the Charlotte-Douglas airport has its rocking chairs, and well, you probably have your own chairs scattered around the house, you likely don’t have anything like this. First, you have the base: Said to be twelve feet tall(I didn’t measure it, but it could be), and including a time capsule(I didn’t dig into it to look), with an eighteen foot Duncan Phyfe-style chair perched on top, for a total of thirty feet of chair goodness. So who was Duncan Phyfe? Apparently a nineteenth century cabinetmaker. No idea how he got into chairs. He allegedly didn’t do anything new, he just interpreted what was already there. Why do they need a really large chair for him in Thomasville? No apparent record that I could find. It must have just seemed like a really good idea.
