Very clean and quite nice. There are vending machines with junk food, drinks and coffee. The restrooms were very clean. All the equipment had motion sensors for cleanliness and efficiency.

Johnson County is proud of it’s heritage and outstanding record in education. It is the home of the University of Iowa and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, which is celebrated at the Eastbound Rest Area across I-80 from here. Johnson County also boasts that it is «One of the smartest counties in the country» while Iowa has a reputation for leading the country in test scores. Historically, there seems to be a connection between the fertile soil and the educational system. From the one-room schoolhouse of the 19th Century to the four regent universities in the state, Iowa is proud of art, agriculture, industry and education. The theme of this rest area is the natural and cultural diversity of Iowa and particularly of Johnson County. The artwork starts with agriculture being the building blocks of education and the evolution of the university system from the one room schoolhouse. The one room schoolhouse is represented outside along with plaques giving a timeline of Iowa development. The main subjects of the four regent universities, Iowa State, University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa and the Iowa School for the Deaf are shown as Terra Cotta books figuratively supporting the building. The Terra Cotta book theme continues ouside, with the building appearing to be a library. Inside, the artwork continues with Meskwaki and Amana tapestry patterns as a floor mural. Ceramic tile murals in the rest room vestibules appears as illustration plates in an old book, representing Iowa’s rich farming heritage and a representation of the state’s first capitol. The building opened in 2001, another in the series of themed rest areas along the Iowa Interstate Highway System.
