Bring your water shoes! Ouch! And no booze is allowed. I also ended up with a rash on my legs right when I got out almost and it still hurts three days later! Hard to sunbath on all the rocks and shells everywhere.

After driving around the Tiverton/Little Compton area, I decided to try to avoid the after work traffic by extending my stay just a little and Fogland Beach helped me to do just that. Now that I’m home, I see that there are two sides to the beach — I wish I knew that before because I guess I picked the worse of the two, so I’ll have to go back and check out the other side another time. I stopped at the first beach you come across where there is a small outhouse(see pic below) and boats moored just off the water. The beach is rocky by the water, but there is a small strip of sand towards the top of the beach. I did not go swimming because it looked a little unappealing — red tide and seaweed flanked most of the rocks leading to the water. I did however enjoy watching the seagulls hunt while I relaxed on my beach chair. I wouldn’t pick this beach for a day trip, but it was a nice reprieve from the go go go of the rest of the day

Fogland is my absolutely FAVORITE spot to anchor the boat up(or grab a mooring) and spend the night — lulled to sleep by the gentle sway of the water. It is also a great non-crazy beach to enjoy your Rhode Island summer: boaters and beachers alike. I am personally not a fan of the ‘whose music is the loudest’ game and ‘how many bodies can fit in a 10×10 square’ at RI hot spots like Scarborough or ABC… Fogland is where you go for a peaceful retreat. Off the beaten path on the road towards Sakonnet Vineyards, and an easy stop off to Gray’s and the Milk & Honey Bazaar, there are two sides of the beach(or bay if you’re in a boat) to choose from: the sheltered water facing north(ie: up and into the bay) or the white sands of the southerly side — not too far from the opening of the bay into the ocean. A few scattered picnic tables and a jungle gym make it family friendly, as well as the more sheltered north beach for tentative swimmers. Water is warm and(except for after a storm) pretty clear. Typically there is the option of renting a windsurfer from the ‘guy’ in the van, including a learners board. Also — a perfect location for a romantic sunset walk, even a not-so-romantic walk on the beach!

Driving through a heavenly little corner of Tiverton will land you at this relatively uncrowded beach, which offers warm, calm water for swimming, clean facilities, picnic tables, and a nearby marsh to explore. The shoreline is a little rough and not particularly welcoming for sunbathers, and the water is a bit murky. I will admit that it was disconcerting to swim along, focused on perfecting my freestyle, and suddenly find myself face to face with a menacing crab or within a foot of a massive patch of slimy seaweed. However, a good friend and I still enjoyed an evening of swimming and exploring, and I would gladly return if I felt like getting away from the crowds at other beaches. Come in the late afternoon or early evening to avoid the parking fees, and don’t forget to stop at nearby Gray’s or Evelyn’s for some of Tiverton’s good eats.
