Fantastic place! I have been going to beauty schools for over a decade. This place is awesome. They have great facials and body wraps for $ 35! I have not had my hair done here but definitely recommend the skin care. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable

I really want to give this place another star for their cheap haircuts and young/​friendly staff. But this place is mediocre. I’ve came here numerous times throughout my childhood and it’s always the same. (I’m the type of person who would cut their own hair). I only come here when I want a drastic change or don’t know how to do something.
Haircuts are $ 8. $ 14 for blowdry/​style. The students are nice, but obviously since it’s a beauty school… they’re still learning. They have to consolidate with their head teacher before making any final decisions.
This place is a hit or miss. They do a decent job, but if you’re scared of getting your haircut… I suggest a professional salon. I come for the cheap haircuts.

I have been a fan for almost 10 years now. I used to go here to get an up-​do for my high school dances, and would always receive compliments. Then came college, and I would get my hair cut/​trimmed whenever I came back home. After moving to Chicago, on the rare occasions when I am back in Michigan, I still go to Excel to cut/​trim my hair. I have a lot of hair and not only that, it is very thick. However, the students have always managed to style my hair accordingly. Also, I’ve gotten my hair permed twice (I get bored with straight hair…) and each time it has come out exactly how I had wanted it to look – beachy wave like curls. Another draw to this place is that the instructors and ladies at the register are extremely friendly and sweet.

I had gone to Excel for about 4 years on and off. Your experience depends on the student. I have only went here for hair not for nails or skin. I love the idea that a student is doing my hair. They are supervised but always up to date on the latest trends, techniques etc. After I saw a friend’s hair after her visit, I was excited to try it out!
A few years ago, there was a male student who was the BEST that I ever had do my hair. He did up-​dos for several of my special occasions, cut my hair and ALWAYS listened to what I was really wanting for me hair — super important quality for a stylist! Since it is a beauty school, once they graduate they are no longer there. When he graduated I was unable to follow him since he was going out of state. However, I recommended EVERYONE I knew to Excel. Since that was in high school and the prices can’t be beat, I sent a lot of people there. However, that was 4 years ago and I have not had a decent experience since.
The front desk is not friendly, the instructors seem to talk down to their students and are extremely rude. In fact, once in front of me, the client, the instructor took the student aside (maybe a foot away) and said «She is too indecisive. If she is not happy with her cut, at least you tried.» I do not know if they thought I was deaf, but I heard every word. At the time, I was too shy to respond but last I remember, they are the professionals! So when I asked for advice on what length of layers would frame my face shape the best, imagine my surprise when that was her response.
Recently I tried to make an appointment, it has been a little over a year since my last visit. I thought I would give it one last shot since they usually have last minute openings available. When I talked to the receptionist I asked when the next available appointment was for a cut and style.
She told me 1pm and when I said that would not work for me, she put me on hold,
I assumed to look at the schedule or cash someone out.
Slightly annoyed but I know it happens– especially being the only one in front.
After 3 or 4 minutes, she came back and asked when I would be available for a color and style.
I restated that I would be coming for a cut and style. Since I know it makes a difference in appointment scheduling.
She then became very defensive and mockingly said «Ok, when do you want a CUT and style?»
I paused for a moment because 1) i was shocked at her tone and 2) was thinking of my schedule for the next day. I then began to tell her some time after 3pm but she cut me off and huffed then said «One moment, I am going to put you on hold.»
I hung up and decided I no longer needed to give this salon any more business or praise.
I understand the salon can get busy but for 10am on a weekday– the attitude was unappreciated. So disappointing. Oh well, on to the next. There are other beauty schools in the area.

I have naturally curly, wavy, frizzy, thick, uncontrollable hair. I don’t think that it has done the same thing twice. One day I’ll put product in it and air dry it and it looks pretty decent. Other days I have to flat iron it within and inch of its life. This is where Excel comes in. For $ 8 ($ 10 with tip) I get a minty shampoo, condition and blow out. You can schedule appointments there, so if someone does a really great job on your hair you can request them again. I also get my trims there, which are $ 14 (I can’t justify spending $ 40 for getting ¼ inch cut off my ends). All the students are professional (IE: no catty gossip) and the receptionists are friendly.
