This place is adorable. An older woman seems to make most of the cakes and run the register. Their white Bavarian cake is one of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten — it would be perfect for a wedding or birthday cake. It isn’t too sweet, the frosting was light and creamy, and the cake had good crumb without being dry. They were out of it the next time I came, sadly. They didn’t have the Black Forest cake that day either, but I’m guessing it’s amazing. I will definitely be back.

We ordered a wedding cake from mary and steve, as always we were running late and they stayed open so we could pick it up. The cake was amazing we kept hearing how great the cake was, after the event ive had to go back to pick up cakes and other items for freinds. The cakes are awesome high end quality at affordable prices, also really moist and flavorful.

This is a review of their Pastie only and not of their Cakes. I have had their cake before and they are a higher rating than 3 stars; however, again this is a review of their beef pastie.
The beef pastie is fairly decent and very reasonably priced and large. The inside of the pastie was surprisingly good… the potatoes were cut small which is what I like and the beef wasn’t too bad either… the seasoning in the pastie was there for the most part and even a hint of sweetness. I did notice that the carrots had grooved cuts in them which tells me that they are dicing up frozen sliced carrots which is not necessarily a bad thing.
Where the Pastie looses a few stars is with the crust. The crust is really a pie crust which if it was used in a pie, it would be great, but it was a little too much crust for a pastie. The edges were large and yet not sealed. The crust was more of the Cornish variety and not that of a Finnish pastie. They could make smaller pasties, charge a little less and make a smaller crust… I like the pastie to be sealed and not pierced in anyway so as to hold in the flavor and juices.
Overall, it is one of the better pasties I have had in the Detroit area… good with ketchup. The inside of the pastie was not too far off the mark, but the crust was a little heavy.

She is old fashioned and so damn sweet herself! She I ordered a customized doll shape cake for my baby’s first birthday. Mary made it perfect! Our whole party was a huge success mainly because of the cake. She even made the cake a little bigger than I asked for so I could serve last minute additional guests too! U won’t believe this part-​she did it all for just 30 bucks! Anywhere else they would have charged an arm n leg for the same cake! And she even gifted my daughter a doll saying it is from grandma Mary :) see. that’s sweet isn’t it! I would recommend grandma Mary to anyone and everyone! She bakes cake with love and we love her :) will update our perfect cake snaps soon!

Awesome awesome bakery! Ordered spinach pies for my son’s 1^st bday party… DELISH! Love this place!

The White Bavarian is the first cake that I tasted at Thomas’s. It was $ 25 and worth every cent. It was light, not too sweet which I love that in my cakes. The mousse filling was tasteful yet not overpowering which is the case for most cakes, but not Thomas’s. The cake was the most moist, light, palette pleasing, complementary cake I have ever had. I can’t stop thinking about this cake. My family celebrates a ton of birthdays starting in late February through April and everyone has said the White Bavarian cake I bought for my brothers birthday from Thomas Cake Bakery was by far the best cake. This was a cake I bought that day, so I could only imagine what there order to made cakes taste like. What I can’t stop thinking about is how well this cake complements itself. From the icing, the mousse filling, to the cake, you are not overpowered by anyone of them. Oh and the rasberry filling layer added just the perfect amount of tart to this cake. The one thing that I might change is all the white chocolate shavings. Not a big fan of white chocolate, but for that cake it was perfect for, but for my taste maybe just a smidge less. I found this place only because I Unilocaled birthday cakes. So thanks Unilocalers! For helping me find my wedding cake!!!

Birthday cake is a BIG deal for me… it’s my most favorite part of the celebration.
Back in 2005, I ordered a birthday cake for the first time from Thomas Cake Shop; it was also the last, as they switched owners and I wasn’t sure if the quality was going to be the same.
When I read in a local paper the previous owners had returned, I was beyond elated.
My 2005 birthday cake was perfect (which was a far cry from being in tears the year before with another Troy bakery cake); I have since not been able to have that perfect cake or pleasant experience.
Cannot wait to start getting cakes from Thomas again; placing an order soon for my son’s birthday — hoping they duplicate the delicious buttercream and moist cake of 2005! The prices are great too! They do special orders and personalization too.

This is a great bakery and the owners are very personable. They bake excellent cakes and cookies plus They take special orders. The prices are more reasonable than other bakeries in the area and that’s why I go there weekly.
