Just what you expect, no more or less. We had French toast w/bacon, corned beef hash and eggs, and BLT. All items epitomized their names. When you think of French toast it’s sliced bread dipped in egg batter and grilled. No unusual bread(thick cut or raisin), no unusual ingredients in batter(cinnamon for example). It was done well with a smile and quickly. Bacon was crisp to order. Coffee was good. Service was quick, attentive but we had to ask for several side items: jelly, sweetener. Not a problem but on the table at most diners.

Disappointed the waffle iron is down but the pecan pancakes were fantastic!

Not sure what all the 5 star reviews are for… my experience here was far from worthwhile. I went in on a sunday around noon. I immediately appreciated the cleanliness and the fun checkeboard floor and colored bar stools. sadly things deteriorated from there. the waitress was ok in that she wasn’t flat-out rude to us, but really did not seem interested in serving us at all. She spent most of the time chatting with some guys who I guess are probably regulars at the counter. Not that big a deal, but good customer service is really important to some people and lack of it can definitely hurt a business. As far as the actual meal goes: the coffee was burnt. I decided to be semi-adventurous and get corned beef hash with eggs(comes with hashbrowns and toast). I had never actually had corned beef hash, and even now I don’t think I can honestly say i have. I do know what it is and what it is supposed to look like, however. chunks or pieces of corned beef cooked with chunks of potato and sometimes carrots and onions. After a little research I did find out that canned corn beef is sometimes used, but even the pictures of that looked way better than what I was served: a disgusting patty that was completely burnt, but when the blackened crust was picked off revealed soggy, mealy mush that most closely resembled dog food with bits of flavorless, overcooked potato thrown in. It was so disgusting. I tried to eat a couple bites but the texture alone made me want to puke and the flavor was in no way good enough to compensate. Thank goodness for the eggs, hashies, and toast that accompanied the dog food disaster. They were fine– not spectacular– but it’s pretty hard to mess those up. Overall the experience was lackluster and in some way downright disgusting. Nothing about it encouraged me at all to ever come back. A total waste of a time and money.

This place is great. Although they are only open until 3:00pm they have a great selection of all day food. My wife and I stopped in for breakfast and were pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive it was. Can’t wait to go back and try the meatloaf entrée. Great bang for the buck and they seem to have a steady influx of regulars so you know it’s good.

Instant coffee service upon seating; service and food are excellent. Omeletes and hashbrowns were perfectly prepared.

Checkboard rocks! Diner food to the max. If I had one flaw with this place, it’s that it is too small. But I have never ever waited for a table yet, despite how busy it can get. It’s tiny but so worth it! Breakfast and lunch only so get in early! The best deal here in my opinion is the 4 items for 5 bucks. I usually get an ice tea which is part of the 5, and then order up either oatmeal(which is hearty and delicious, and you can dump in cinnamon and raisins), hashbrowns and toast(included as one item), a fresh fruit bowl(which is wonderful, filled with goodies) and often I take the biscuit and gravy or a side of eggs. And the pancakes are SOOOOO good! Beyond this, the menu is full of great and inexpensive breakfast items, pancake sandwich, swiss cheese and mushroom omelette delicious, and lots of great specials on the board. They keep your ice tea and coffee refilled often. And never had the lunch items but there are burgers and sandwiches a-plenty. My latest eating at Checkerboard was great as always. Two hearty scrambled eggs, oatmeal with raisins and cinnamon, and a good pumpkin muffin(didn’t taste like it was baked in the store, but was warm and good!) It’s always a low bill but I leave stuffed. Great place to go, real down home cooking at Checkerboard.

Wow! This place is great. The food is homemade and soups are fantastic. I have eaten there for breakfast and lunch. Fyi they are not open for dinner. The service was good and friendly. Everytime we’re in town we head eight over there. Not to mention their prices are very reasonable.
