Tim Howell started teaching«gentle yoga» in Vail mid-January 2013 and I started taking classes there with him toward the end of January. His is a very good teacher and I particularly like the information about what the pose is doing for the body. whether it is massaging the thyroid, massaging the liver, etc. It makes you think about the effect of the pose and visualize how you are assisting your body. I really like that approach. He calls it «gentle», but it is challenging yoga and each class is different so it never gets stale. Some days I leave class exhausted but exhilarated. What a combination! I look forward to my yoga classes with Tim and I’ve never anticipated enjoying any exercise in my life! I feel my body strengthening and becoming more flexible. He teaches at various community centers around town so check his webpage or Facebook page for locations.

New EVENING classes, beginning May 14!!! If you live on Tucson’s east side and are looking for a progressively challenging hatha yoga class, check this out at 6 – 7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday evenings at the VFW(on the southwest corner of Broadway and Spanish Trail). My earlier review provides the back story, but after six weeks, here’s why I so love this class: – The instructor(Tim Howell) takes a holistic(rather than guerrilla) approach. Meaning? He teaches yoga as a lifestyle rather than a hip alternative to Zumba. Tim spends the first 5 to 10 minutes of every class on something he calls«Yoga Off the Mat». Which is: talking about our body’s energetic centers and sharing inspiring success stories. – He is a capital T Teacher. In other words, not doing his own practice in front of the class. Tim runs — sometimes leaping around pretzel-ed bodies — from one end of the room to the other, correcting postures, encouraging or re-positioning beginners and reminding us when to inhale and exhale. – That said, he doesn’t coddle. «Good luck to all of you,» he smirks before introducing a new pose. He introduces a new pose and new challenges in EVERY class. – Mats(double stacked), blocks and straps are all in place when you arrive.(You might be asked to spend a few minutes stacking and packing mats, etc. after class. If you can’t, no sweat.) – Each class is a freaking $ 5! If all that sounds positive… show up Monday evening already! ;-) Classes fill quickly.(Tim’s magic number is 24 and our 10:30 a.m.Tuesday and Friday sessions are maxed out many days.)
