I dealt with Mr. Schmerl as a third party attorney involved in an estate matter for my family. Following the sale of the home involved, personal property was removed from the premises and is still being withheld from parties involved. This has been going on since early 2014. The last communication was in October of 2014, and since that point calls I have made to Schmerl’s office and emails to his office get no response. I live over 1500 miles away, thus it’s not easy to just drive over or to personally track down my property. I agree that Mr. Schmerl can act cordial and certainly graduated from law school thus he has some knowledge, but his unfeeling lack of communication following the devastating loss of a family member as well as the simple common courtesy to communicate and advise as to disposition of valuable personal property leaves me with total distrust.

I enjoy doing online reviews, but I usually restrict myself to my view of restaurants & movies. Obviously, every one is entitled to their opinion, based on their experience, expectations & perceptions. Peter Schmerl has only been reviewed once on Unilocal & it was a highly critical & negative analysis. I originally consulted Mr Schmerl in 2004 to put into place an estate plan consisting of: my will, power of attorney, medical power of atty., advance directives, etc. I also met w/​him 2 yrs ago to update my important documents. Today I had a phone consultation w/​him to discuss a current legal issue. In all my experiences, I found him to be cordial, insightful & well-​versed in the law. He has returned my phone calls in a timely manner. His fees are reasonable; I would not hesitate to recommend his services, especially for estate planning, to anybody seeking legal expertise.

I had a horrible experience with this attorney and probably should have filed a complaint with the bar association. He is not trustworthy and has very limited scope of legal practice experience. He is also lackadaisical in communicating and returning phone calls. My mother was the victim of very large theft. In my case, he misrepresented his experience with bankruptcy and banking laws. After paying his requested retainer, I waited three months without any return of my phone calls and emails. With one day before our creditor’s claim needed to be filed, he admitted that he was not licensed to practice bankruptcy law and only had an elemental understanding of the rules. We missed the opportunity to protect my mother’s rights to protect her claim with criminal charges for theft. Walk away from this lawyer.
