I have a thing for donuts, light and airy donuts glistening with a sparkling sugary layer of glaze, old fashioned donuts that look like the top of castle turrets and taste like heaven, long skinny bars frosted with chocolate or maple frosting, jelly or custard filled donuts with a liberal dusting of powdered sugar, even the ones with the ridiculously colored frosting and a sprinkling of colorful jimmies. I like to eat donuts. I’m certainly no certified expert in the art of making or tasting of donuts. I prefer to think of my obsession with donuts as more of a homegrown talent. I’ve eaten donuts all over the country, and as such such have come to know what I like… and what I don’t like. I like the donuts at Tulare Donut on the Southeast corner of E Tulare Ave and South K Street. At least, I liked the donut I tried, a raised donut covered with granular white sugar, a true classic of the donut world. It was light and fluffy, not too sweet but not too bland, either. The sugar, while clinging securely to the donut, did not cling to my fingers of sprinkle itself all over my shirt, one of personal donut pet peeves. Mom and I visited this store in the early afternoon. It can be dangerous, at times, to visit a donut store after lunchtime when the donuts have been lingering in the display cases for too long and are starting to get a little stale or — even worse — a little greasy as they start to sweat the oil in which they were fried. Not so, here. The donut was as fresh when we bought it as if it had been early morning. I’d purchase donuts here any time. There are plenty of bright sunny yellow booths inside where you can enjoy your sugary treats, three big booths in the back, and two big ones and two small ones in the front. This place isn’t fancy, but the donuts are solid.
