Get outside your comfort zone, folks. Pine & Lewis isn’t exactly the first place you’re going to drive by when making lunch plans, but Moonsky’s Cheesesteaks is worth the visit. It was a little weird that this came up on Unilocal as Daylight Donuts. This divey joint, with 4 tables, a TV showing cops, and a permanent coating of grease on everything, is a combination Daylight Donuts and Cheesesteak restaurant. A friend took me here for lunch and we pulled up to a makeshift parking lot next to a laundromat in near-North Tulsa. You order cheesesteaks(choose from chicken, beef, shrimp, or a mix) and pay at the counter. My combo order(Beef Cheesesteak with everything, Fries and a Drink) cost about $ 7.00. I don’t know what«everything» exactly entailed but the spicy mix of jalepenos and juicy goodness hit the spot. Best part of this cheesesteak: an awesome toasted bun. Wrapped in butcher paper, this sandwich was pure heaven to bite into. The warm bun is not to be missed. Each bite was better than the next and the bun is huge so you don’t end up with steak falling out onto your tray. Things to get over before you go: 1_It’s greasy. Like the air is greasy, the doorhandles are greasy, the napkins are greasy 2_You aren’t gonna feel like a million bucks after eating a Moonsky’s Cheesesteak — but you’re going to a cheesesteak place so I think you have to expect that 3_It takes a little longer than you’d expect for a cheesesteak and fries, but the staff is super friendly 4_Fries are ehhh. Ketchup is in some weird unlabeled bottle and tastes a little funky Good lunch time crowd, diverse group of people — blue collar, white collar, all colors of collars, cheap, and just a damn good sandwich. Ambiance could use a bit of an upgrade — even for a dive place.

First time visit, had the regular cheesesteak(have to for first time trial!). Great bread; ordered with provlone, hold lettuce & mayo. Fries were above average – crunchy and decent flavor. Would like to try shrimp /chicken next time. They have bottled drinks only.

Had the cheese steak with shrimp. I figured since I was so far off the beaten path might as well try something out of the norm. It was one of those things that doesn’t really sound like it will work, but it’s on the menu so maybe I’m missing something, I mean I like grilled shrimp with steaks. It was good, but it wasn’t rock my world good, next time I’ll just go for the steak and cheese. Overall the fries were good, the cheesesteak is on their own bread which was really good as well. The star of the show here is supposed to be the cajun chicken, I don’t like spicy stuff so I didn’t go with that. If you do stop by this joint and are into Spicy things give it a shot and let me know how it is. Gonna have to go with 4 stars on this one, with further pending investigation(lunch) to see if just the cheese steak makes it a 5 star.

I am almost reluctant to post reviews of Moonsky’s because if the lunch line gets longer I won’t be able to make it back to work in time with my glee-inciting cheesesteak under my arm. The donuts are fine, they’re a Daylight Donuts. The cheesesteaks are fantastic — the cajun chicken is their signature but honestly I just like the classic beef and cheese best. Their bread is homemade, too, and really good. They do take-out if you call ahead. They sell snow cones during the summer, which I haven’t tried. Typical busy counter service and clearly bustling kitchen at lunch, but have never had an issue with getting the wrong thing. They have some basic indoor-only tables to eat at if you’re staying in. They close by 3:30, but you can get cheesesteaks as early as 10 am.

I stopped by another of Tulsa’s off the beaten path restaurants for a cheesesteak from Moonsky’s. Although Moonsky’s starts the day as a donut shop, my main attraction is to the outstanding, and very flavorful cheesesteak. My favorite is the cajun chicken and shrimp with onions, peppers and provolone. Hot, messy and spicy. Traditional philly-style cheesesteaks are available as well as other combinations. I’m planning my next visit right now!
