Was looking for a local place to enjoy lunch with my family as were visiting the university that my mom graduated from back in the early 60’s, then known as Tuskegee Institute. We decided to call before we went to the restaurant to see what forms of payment they accepted. I’ll freely admit I should have read the info available on Unilocal about this but what follows does not excuse Coops. The first time I asked what forms of payment they accepted and the woman who answered informed me quite pointedly that I called the wrong number and hung up on me. My wife then called to ask the same question and was berated(probably by the same woman) for asking about forms of payment, explaining we were traveling and just wanting to be sure we had cash on us if necessary. The woman at Coops simply told my wife, «just come!» and hung up again. We decided to not bother them anymore and ate elsewhere. So my recommendation? Drive to Montgomery and eat at Martins!

I heard of the place so I decided to try it. I got the chicken and fries special. It was pretty good! The only problem is that the older woman working there had an extremely difficult time understanding my order. But otherwise it’s a great place for fried chicken.

We had the choices of chicken… or…well only chicken. Fried chicken was too salty and the workers seemed to tired to cook. The owner worked hard to please us, but the food choices werelacking. All other reviews about the building were spot on.

The coop is a small down home soul food spot. This place has excellent tasting southern soul food cuisine priced for the college student. All the food your grandmother cooked is here daily at a very affordable price. I personally love the fried chicken dinner with Mac and cheese, greens, rice and gravy and slice of corn bread! I will always eat here anytime I stop back at my beloved alma mater!

As a product of the local HBCU, Tuskegee Institute(University). I was made to love«Da Coop». Student specials were $ 1.00 which include a 2pc w/a roll. The best dollar spent. If your parents sent $$, you would up it to a full dinner for $ 3.00.WOW. The peach cobbler is awesome, but may not be in or out of the oven when you go. It is a gamble that is disappointing when you are told it will be 45 minutes and you are traveling through. It was custom to ask for extra salt. As you get older that is not so the desire :) A MUSTSTOPSPOT for some of the best fried, season salted chicken in the south.

The coop is a really small little shack on the side of the road and was told about this place by a friend who had visited Alabama recently. So decided to check it out and see what was up. The inside is pretty limited and its really hard to see the food as they have a plexiglass shield that is scratched and foggy from constant cleaning I think. And the only way to talk to the server is through a small 5″ hole in this plex. So decide to just go with the standard, fried chicken, succotash, mac and cheese, and corn bread. Gotta say, the fried chicken here, as with most places in the south, is just incredible. Just lightly lightly breaded and deep fried to perfection and season salt added. Add the succotash blend of corn, tomatoes and okra with the cheesy mac n cheese and it was all good. So the looks of this place may not be the most impressive but someone behind the glass sure knows how to cook the food. But since this is soul food, could only go there once as was completely weighed down after that!
