Giving it a 4 star because the grits are the best I have ever had. I had the country fried steak breakfast plate $ 5.95 and it was fine. People are nice there. I would go again if it was on my route.

Great find — thanks Unilocal friends! Looking for lunch winding through Alabama on State Route 82& we found this local gem. Pulled pork sandwich with homemade BBQ sauce & onion rings hit the spot. Teenage son mowed through double cheeseburger & home cut battered French fries. Tried corn nuggets which were deep fried creamed corn & tasty. Place does a lot of take out for the local crowd. Last minute splurge on fried cherry & cream cheese pie. Piping hot out of the fryer — best wonton ever.

Since 1949… and not much has changed, I’d bet. I was beating the backroads of southeastern Abalama on my way home from a visit to Atlanta and got hungry around Union Springs. I drove around town a bit and didn’t see anything, so I stopped at a convenience store and asked where a good place to eat was located. A couple of hundred yards down the road was the Hilltop Grill. The dirt/gravel parking lot was nearly empty when I arrived, but that changed in short order, as people arrived to pick up to-go orders or eat inside. The building itself is a low and small cinder block affair, in decent repair, but it could benefit from some upgrades. I ordered the $ 3 pulled pork sandwich(see pic) with a side of tater tots. The picture of the sandwich might not convey the mound of delicious pork installed on that bun. It was heaped up and brimming with lip-smacking goodness. The tater tots were hot and crispy, although there weren’t a lot of them. There’s a squeeze bottle of home-made BBQ sauce on each table, which was quite good… well-balanced between sweetness and vinegar. I also shook some Tabasco sauce on before I tore into the sandwich. Moving on from that appetizer, I ordered a cheeseburger($ 3.70, IIRC… see pic). It was a fairly thick, hand-made patty, a bit on the dry side. I ran out of burger before I ran out of bun, but I enjoyed it anyway. Would have been better with a minute or two less time on the griddle. Self-serve Coke fountain drinks, sweet and unsweet tea. I had real lemon slices with mine, which was a nice touch. Those plastic packets of lemon juice suck. You order at the counter just inside of the front door, stake a claim to a booth or table, and they bring out your food to you. The menu is hanging behind the counter, so if your eyesight is faulty, you might be in the way of hungry patrons as you try to make a selection. A solid four stars for quality, quantity, and price. Glad that I stopped and asked a local for a recommendation and found Hilltop Grill.
