My fiancé and I discovered Daniel Schreiber of Flatlander Chocolate at the farmer’s market. We’re both major suckers for super-dark chocolate, and Daniel’s chocolate delivers. I’m pretty sure that he’s the only bean-to-bar chocolate manufacturer in the entire state of Illinois. Each week, Daniel seems to have something new at his booth(I haven’t tried anything from him that I haven’t liked… one of the best being«Porcini & Sea Salt»). He speaks with infectious enthusiasm and passion while explaining the chocolate’s origin and layers of flavor. In sum, these bars are endorphin-makers for dark chocolate lovers. Buy some now – don’t wait for the farmer’s market, either. You can get them at Common Ground Co-Op, Caffe Paradiso, and other select locations around town. Oh! And one more thing: Be sure to try one of his chocolate-covered caramels. My god. I sort of think that he should go into a separate caramel-making business. So good. UPDATE7÷30÷10: Daniel Schreiber was found dead of an apparent suicide on the morning of July 27th. This is a tremendous loss for the community. According to the News-Gazette, his booth at the Farmer’s Market will remain empty for the rest of the season, so friends, family, and fans can leave memorials for him.
