Given the fall season we had a hard time finding a camp ground. Most of the sites are closed. Papa Murphs is a primitive site but they’re friendly and Ryan, our bartender was Amazing, friendly, and personable. Will be back, even just for a beer.

Camped there with my wife and son because the campground we had reservations with flooded. We had a great time. Bare bones camping. The way camping should be. You get a site with a picnic table and fire ring. The bar owners were very friendly and helpful. The locals in the bar were also friendly. Only drawback is that they have only 2 porta potties which got quite disgusting by the end of the weekend. Would definitely go there again.

We chose Papa Murph’s for our scooter rally, and couldn’t be happier we did. Sheryl was so accommodating and helped us out with every detail. Se even asked us if there was any particular booze they should stock just for us. I can’t recommend this place enough for large group gatherings like rallies or reunions. Thanks for a successful weekend, Papa Murph’s, we can’t wait to come back. –Chicago Scooter Jerks

I was there for the motorscooter rally over Labor Day weekend(with Aaron, below) and I cant’ agree more, we’ll definitely be back. We’d been looking for years for somewhere we could camp as a group and be a bit loud and obnoxious without annoying the owners, campers, or local residents. They blocked off a section of the site for us, and welcomed us in the bar and the owners and staff really went out of their way to give us the run of the place and make us feel welcome. It’s just a wide open field surrounded by cornfields and rural highways and there’s not much shade or amenities(other than the bar) but I couldn’t recommend it more for a group camping event/party, like maybe a family reunion or a vintage car club or any big group. I imagine most weekends it’s pretty quiet and laid back, but If you’re looking for scenic nature, solitude, and tranquility, there are probably better campgrounds in the area. Seems like it’d also be a great place to stop for the night if you’re motorcycle or bicycle touring and want a cheap place to set up your tent and have a few beers. It is ridiculously convenient to Starved Rock, by the way, just a half-mile or so down the road from the entrance.

I was there for the labor day weekend, it was great for camping, bar, video poker, and great pizzas! They were so hospitable, the beer was always cold and all the bartenders super friendly and helpful to the out of towner that I was. Do stop and camp here for the night, and enjoy all the drinks you can at the bar. Just don’t forget the big spray, your surrounded by fields.

I stayed here with my boyfriend because the state park campground was full. It was a BLAST. Cheryl was SO friendly and the place was very simple but fun. The bar was open late and the people who stayed there were all friendly. Really a fun atmosphere. Bundles of wood were $ 5 and bags of ice were $ 2 each. This is a place for people who are low maintenance and just want to have a good time. Not the place to go if you are looking for a quiet place to camp in the woods; Papa Murph’s is off the road near a field. I would definitely go there again with friends for a fun, cheap experience!

Stayed here because the state park campground was full and area campgrounds had no tent camping due to recent rains. As the other reviewer said, it’s bare bones camping — you get some ground and a fire ring. The local folks in the bar were very friendly and make for some good entertainment. Porta-potty in the field but the bar bathrooms were decent.

**REVIEWOFCAMPGROUND** First let me start by stating I did not camp here and I did not stop here. I simply drove by and want to leave a review because I was debating staying here Labor Day Weekend 2010. FROMWHAT I SAW: It is literally the backyard of a bar(they let you carry-out liquor to your campsite :-D). Do no expect anything more. There was a porta-potty, 1 tree(and bushes on the opposite side), fire rings, and pick-nick tables. This would be a good last minute or I don’t wanna be home and don’t want annoying campers around.
