The Dukes Backwater Supper Club

Great food, good prices, cold beer, friendly and prompt staff… A Local favorite. Definitely the best dive bar in the Southeast! (Since this is listed under dive bars!)

Awesome ribeye for a fantastic price. Ordered a side of fried pickles. I couldn’t have made the steak any better and I’m pretty good at it. Great service.
Why not 5 stars? It’s a smoking establishment. Ok Dorothy I’m not in California. I will return!

The Dukes is a local treasure of the backwaters and most certainly a place where southern hospitality is unlimited and the inviting smiles and conversation, as well as the delicious food, will make you forget the general look of the place (it’s been around a while and it’s outdated aesthetically).
The Space:
Duke’s is pretty much as divey as they come. It used to be a pool hall but they have since opened it up for more seating. There is a full bar for ordering and in the back they actually have some virtual game machines if you were inclined to pine away some time that way.
The Food:
For the look of the place, the food is actually really quite solid. I ordered the hamburger steak, which came with sweet potato home fries and fried okra. The hamburger steak was covered in ample amounts of gravy with browned onions on top and was deliciously prepared. The sweet potato home fries weren’t as crispy as I would have liked and a tad greasy, but they tasted fine and were fully cooked and seasoned well. The fried okra was battered in-​house for sure and was definitely among the best I have ever had.
The Service:
As I mentioned, the servers are very friendly and social, as most of the people who come here are regulars and know the staff personally. We got the order to go and it took about 20 minutes for 4 entrees to be cooked, which was fine because the staff kept us engaged with conversation throughout the wait.
Final Thoughts:
Do not let the look fool you: there is a reason this place has been in business for as long as it has (I believe someone said over 30 years). The food was great and reasonably priced. The environment, though not what an outsider might be accustomed to, is not nearly enough of an excuse to not stop by.
