My child was part of the Applied Medical Sciences Program run by Marilyn Smith. Her first year as Director of this program. It was my experience to be provided with information and explanation from the Director which was inconsistent with actual classroom activities. At the end of the program kids should be able to test to become a state certified nursing assistant. It was a wasted year for a majority of these kids. A very small percentage actually received authorization to test at the state level although they did pass the class for the school district. It is my opinion this is a failure of the staff and mainly the Director of the staff if so many cannot achieve a level after a year of training to at least test with the state. My opinions are based on my interactions with AMS and mainly one section within this group. I would not recommend this particular program. I believe major changes need to be made to the program. It would make a great investigative story for local news because the Skills Center claims to be so successful. Passing within the program for the School District is not what should be looked at as success of a program. Success is the number of kids that are deemed qualified to test at the state level and really should include actual state testing success. To me the program is a complete failure.
