This is one of the reasons we come over to Vashon. Dig Nursery has some attractive, unusual plants. Flanked by gabion pillars(with a cool rooster perched on top of one of them), this is not your ordinary neighborhood garden nursery. Come over to get yourself inspired by their garden artwork whether it be with the large stainless steel balls floating on their unique fountain display, or the cool glass ball chandeliers hanging in their greenhouse. Sylvia and Ross have always been gracious, hospitable hosts to their garden paradise. With unique plants, unique garden art, wonderful owners, what more can you ask of a nursery?

The first time my husband and I visited, my husband asked the owner(lady) a question and this woman replied in a most rude and disdainful manner. Over the past year, two island residents at separate times have made unsolicited remarks about the owner’s rudeness. This summer, I decided to give Dig another chance only to have the owner hurl a zinger at me. I was stunned and speechless and felt most unwelcome… I couldn’t even speak… I just made a quick exit. It’s a wonder she stays in business or married. She obviously is an unhappy woman.

Update: She went out of her way to call me with info on where to find the hose reel — within days. I’m a fan.

This is not your ordinary nursery and and garden shop! On a weekend trip to the island, I saw a sign for this place and made my husband turn around. I was greeted by a somewhat small, but extremely well curated shop that is right up my alley: lots of interesting plants mingled amongst drought tolerant succulents, natives, and veggies and herbs, all seemingly very healthy and happy specimens. But what I found the neatest were all the amazing pots and unique, one-of-a-kind custom made garden accessories. I am a modern style junkie and trying to find modern, clean, and interesting design in garden stores is like a needle in a haystack. But here, it was all together! Simple, streamlined pots in shades of grey, giant pots in bright modern colors, interesting shapes and designs, pre-made succulent plantings, and very cool colorful, powdercoated spheres for hanging planters that they put together themselves(of which I took two home). I also have to say that the people here were extremely friendly and were more than eager to help, answered questions and gave advice, even though we didn’t buy much. If only I lived were closer, I would be here frequently!

I love DIg for its aesthetic, artistic environment and for its selection of unusual plants. I agree with other reviewers that the owner is often less than pleasant(why is she in the service industry I wonder?). However, I put up with the unfriendliness because of the quality of her plants. I would rather deal with unpleasantness and get great plants than friendliness and get poor quality plants. In an ideal world, one would get both but we don’t live in an ideal world!

I don’t live on Vashon, but go there to visit. I love Dig for the creativity and the artistry. My husband and daughter indulged me on Mother’s Day and went with me. I asked what I thought was a relatively innocuous gardening question and got treated with complete disdain, a pretty much«are you stupid?» response and was told not to buy things if I wasn’t willing to use the internet or Sunset gardening book. So, I guess I can remove Dig from my need to go when on Vashon list.

Great selection of water conserving plants and regular ones. And fruits and vegetables to plant and planters and landscaping stuff. Very helpful knowledgeable staff. Worth a trip to Vashon if you don’t already have a reason. But there are many reasons to visit idyllic Vashon.

The proprieter is very rude. I stopped in here unexpectedly and was pleasantly surprised by the selection and quality of the nursery. I simply asked if they accepted credit cards and was told«not for $ 2.00 a pound heirloom tomatoes we don’t». Wow, where did that come from? I stood there for about 20 seconds getting myself composed before leaving. I would not make the effort to come here again. It’s a shame because the nursery itself is very nice.

Artful and original, DIG is my go-to place for everything that Heronswood used to be: interesting plants, cool plant design, stuff made out of recycled objects I wouldn’t have thought of. I found Sylvia and Ross generous with their ideas, friendly and smart. I’ve been known to hustle out of Home Depot with some low-priced oat grass now and then and DIG will never be as cheap but what I’ve gotten at DIG is way more unique, local and makes my garden cooler than me.

Saw them at the Seattle Flower and Gardens show and knew we had to make a stop when we visited the island. Cool and funky for sure! Love the sheds, aluminum tubs and the creativity. Priced out a couple of things that didn’t seem too outrageous. It was raining and no one came out to help us, but we weren’t seriously looking so it hardly fazed us. Great ground for ideas!

Dig is all about the inner angel and devil competing for primacy. Check this out: On a scant couple of acres, this meticulously controlled garden-as-high-art operation celebrates possibility and the lush life. I am positive this is where rock stars and other unapproachables would fulfill their gardening fantasies, in part because the icy proprietor(Sylvia) would out-unapproachable them. Steel yourself for a clubbish energy, ignore them harder than they ignore you, and take the plunge. First of all, I’ve sworn off DIG. So I blame my devil for plunking me down there in the first place. When I recoil in sticker shock, mortified lest I reveal my middle-class from behind my ridiculously outsized shades, my devil rolls his eyes and whispers, disgusted, oh, gawd, just go for it. You have more money than gawd. Pay no attention to the(gasp) prices. You should have that fabulous mosaic stepping stone, and that luminous lemon yellow pot, too. Take one of everything and then stock up on the very, very, very particularly enticing plants and ornaments. Go wild. No restraints. With any luck my angel guides me to return everything I’ve oggled, fondled, and otherwise coveted on my way to the(adorable) check-out cabana. I will buy a half flat of assorted, spectacular plants, all meticulously groomed and prepped for Jeeves to plant while I jet off to mingle with my Hollywood friends.
