When you arrive at the West End Farmers’ Market in Cameron Station you’ll notice a big, old-fashioned-milk-truck looking mobile parked at the end of the row. Lucky for you, it’s the Maple Avenue Market truck, On the Gourmet, outfitted to look like a tiny, moving gourmet shop. Owners Sara and Chris Guerre’s motto for Maple Avenue is «Keepin’ it local,» and they do. They feature local products like Route 11 potato chips(Winchester, y’all!), bloody mary mix and marinara sauces, honey, chutneys, truffle oils, and crackers. They sell organically farm-grown produce like lettuce, tomato, peppers, garlic scapes, and kale, as well as locally made cheeses which are creamy and delicious. One of the best things about OtG is the fact that the meats, cheese, and eggs come from nearby sustainable and humane farms. There are free-range meats from bison to pork to lamb, at relatively affordable prices… I figure if you’re going to eat meat(I don’t, but husband is an equal opportunity meat eater…), it should come from one animal, who led a good, free-range life eating grass, and you pay a little extra for a clean conscience. Also featured on the OtG truck is hormone-free, organic milk in glass bottles from grass-fed cows. It’s wonderful. We have a standing weekly order for a half gallon of 2% milk, and I almost feel guilty drinking it. It’s decadently creamy and tastes purely of *milk*. It makes me realize I’m a city girl who’s been drinking a sad milk-imitation my whole life. Prices are a bit high at MAM and OtG, but I realize you pay for what you get: in this case sustainably produced, organic, delicious, and«humane» food. Worth the cost in my mind.
