I’m a new patient of Dr. Hughes and highly respect his experience and capabilities. I needed an emergency operation for two badly herniated discs which had partially paralyzed my legs. Dr. Hughes seems to have restored me to my prior health; for all he has done with me he’s now my family’s spine expert (hoping we won’t need to see him again though!).
I highly recommend Dr. Hughes for spinal injuries or problems.

I first saw Dr. Hughes in March 2011. I had a herniated disc at L4/​L5 and I had been working with a different orthopedic surgeon for over a year trying to get the disc to heal with non-​surgical treatments. The treatments were not working and I was in excruciating pain all the time. I wanted a second opinion and Dr. Hughes recommended surgery and I readily agreed.
When I woke up from surgery, I immediately began crying tears of joy because for the first time in over a year I could feel my right leg. I was in pain from the incision, but once the incision healed, I have had absolutely no pain in my back or my leg. I returned to full activity and have run seven Half Marathons since my back surgery.
I appreciated the holistic approach Dr. Hughes has. Surgery is only one tool in addressing back pain. Dr. Hughes told me post-​surgery that I needed to get serious about exercising, stretching, strengthening my core, and taking care of myself. Dr. Hughes gave me a second chance at a pain-​free life and a strong back. I am forever grateful.

I’ve had two ACDF surgeries by Dr. Hughes. He performed the surgeries with great expertise and has eased my neck pain for the first time in years. Very confident and honest surgeon. Staff was very kind and helpful, as well. Only downside is long wait times at the tysons office but it’s worth the wait to get the right care.

I visited Dr. Hughes for the first time in so much pain sleep was beyond possible for me. I was exhausted and barely able to function. He saw an immediate need to order an MRI (which later showed a huge herniated disc at c5/​c6) and his staff called the hospital to schedule it for me THAT evening and also handled all approvals through my insurance. I was back in to see him the very next morning. I could not have been more thankful that someone was finally managing my pain and giving me a plan. His office was also able to get me into see a pain management doctor weeks earlier than the first appointment they had originally given me over the phone. After physical therapy and steroid shots I ended up needing surgery and I couldn’t have been in better hands. From my first contact with his office staff through my very last visit I was made to feel like an individual and never rushed along. His staff called to check on me during the week prior to my surgery to see how I was feeling and when I left his office today after my post operative visit, I still feel the same way. I am still in the process of recovering but trust that I found the best surgeon for my spinal surgery. If you are looking for a genuine & talented doctor that cares — look no further.

Dr. Hughes is a fantastic Orthopedist. His approach is great; he looks at all non-​surgical options first. Made certain I had ZERO unanswered questions before moving forward.
Short story: I spent over a month working non-​surgical options for a herniated disc. Unfortunately, I fell into the small percentage of people that went downhill quickly and Dr. Hughes was instantly ready to assist me. He scheduled a shot for the same day to help alleviate any pain possible, along with scheduling (much needed) surgery for only 5 days into the future (unheard of when not deemed emergency).
The surgery itself was incredible, I had instant relief when I woke up from anesthesia.
I was told to workout and lift weights within two days post surgery. I have not taken any pain meds, been working out regularly, and feel incredible.
I chose Dr. Hughes and Ortho-​Virginia for their «surgery last» mindset as it mirrors my own. Sometimes you can not avoid surgery and Dr. Hughes was stellar.
I would absolutely recommend Dr. Hughes for anyone experiencing back problems.
