Went here despite 2.5 star average. Gentleman at the drive through was super friendly; not the canned phrases overbearing type either. Service speed was reasonable as well.

I’m not able to speak to the interior of the Newtown Road KFC, since I always order via the drive thru. But my vehicle driven dining experiences have always been very positive. KFC hadn’t been high on my radar screen for many years. That all changed when the Waze app tempted me with a drop down advertisement as I approached the store. Very hungry, having left work late and then checked on my elderly Uncle, I gave in to my impulse to stop. App advertising obviously does reap benefits. What I found at this store was friendly employees, prompt service, well cooked food, and menu items that were all available. Let me count the times, over decades, that I’ve ordered at the Haygood KFC and been given the response«We’re out of original recipe»; or «We have no legs»; etc., etc., etc. I started to wonder if it was a conspiracy. «Here she comes. Hide the chicken!!» None of the«out of’s» have been experienced at the Newtown Road store. Friendly employees have reached out the window to pet my dog. They’ve offered service with a smile. And are they fast! The location has a plus & a number of minuses. It is on my driving path from a regular Kempsville destination to my neighborhood. But it isn’t located in a thriving part of town. The shopping center behind the store is dark & deserted. A feeling of safety isn’t conveyed. It isn’t an easy store to get in & out of. There is no direct turn in. You enter via an entrance road that allows you to turn in near the back of the store. If one’s destination is toward Northampton Boulevard, an exit is relatively simple. But if the chicken purchase is to be taken back to Kempsville, the return can be near to impossible. This week I gave up on attempting a southerly turn on Newtown Road. Faced with the possibility of being trapped at KFC forever, I chose to exit north. The return required a right hand turn on Baker Road, a turn into the deserted shopping center, then back on Baker Road to the welcome assistance of a traffic light. The experience did yield a helpful bit of information. One can exit the KFC parking lot into the deserted shopping center and drive through it to Baker Road & the helpful traffic light. Any reader in their right mind should now be thoroughly«over» my whiny complaints regarding my experience of being trapped at KFC. After all, I am the same one who can beat out NYC taxi drivers to merge into the«every man for himself» madness lanes that are the Lincoln Tunnel. So I’ll spare you further misery and move on. May I make one general complaint to the KFC powers that be? Why have you taken baked beans off the menu? It’s a travesty, having fried chicken without baked beans, even if the biscuit is yummy. All the new glitzy menu choices don’t make up for the lack of baked beans. Sigh… Will I go back to the Newtown Road KFC? Absolutely! Do I like the location? Absolutely not! But it isn’t a perfect world.

I was told that my chicken would take 20 minutes to cook as they were busy. It’s true that they were busy, but I wanted my chicken so I waited. After 25 minutes I go up to the counter and they serving the type of chicken I had ordered and was waiting on to other customers that came in after me. I was told I would have to wait another 8 minutes. Not only was the service terrible, there was no ice in the soda machine and some of the sodas were empty!

Decently clean store. It’s never busy so most times I order food from here it’s cold or taste old. Make sure to get the FLG sauce for your food! The mashed potatoes taste super instant and salty.
