Nice, but quiet staff. Informative and helpful. The petit fours(spelling?) are delish. The éclair is super yummy. Good custard and nice perfect flaky yumminess.

There cakes and pastries never let me down. Every time I get a cake from here people rave about it and ask where it’s from. The almond cake is like a petifore. It’s very rich and sweet so a little goes a long way One of the best bakeries in town!

Plaza Bakery has been around since I was a little kid(it use to be in the Plaza Shopping Center back in the 70s, when I was growing up). It is not located in the Hilltop section of Virginia Beach. I primarily go there for their petite fours. They are to die for! They also make an awesome Rainbow Bar(small rectangular almond flavor cake with rainbow cake inside), that tastes like a giant petite four. Tastes like a piece of Heaven! Their cinnamon and raisin buns are delish, as are many of their donuts. The Boston Cream donut is my favorite! Their breakfast pastries are very good, as well. My favorite being their raisin, cinnamon, nut coffee danish. They also have a decent selection of cookies, cakes and pastries. If you’re a true VB local, Plaza Bakery is one of those«must stop» places that calls to you every so often just because you get a hankering for one of their specialties that you’ve grown to love over the years! You can’t go wrong if you find yourself in this bakery. Your blood sugar spikes as soon as you walk in the door! The smells… oh, the smells… I dare you to walk in the door without a smile on your face! In fact, I double-dog dare ya’!

Was next door at the Med Emporium and wandered in here. A lady was asking for her money back on a cake she’d had made that had messed up icing(looked like perhaps she had messed it up in transit and/or after she got it home but who am I to judge). There were some cupcakes and cookies and brownies in the glass case that looked decent but I didn’t buy or try anything. Nothing in here was gourmet-looking and the decorations weren’t first-rate. I looked at some of the Unilocal photos of custom cakes and they look pretty good so I could be horribly wrong but the décor on the doughnuts and cookies and cupcakes I saw were not better than something I could’ve done and I’m not very good or trained professionally…

Plaza was the go-to fresh bakery in the Hilltop section of Virginia Beach for many years, and is still a great spot for wonderful cookies, sweet rolls, freshly made pies and a limited selection of basic breads and dinner rolls. But the bakery has not followed the trend toward fancifully decorated cakes(they try, but their heart isn’t really in it) and exotic European breads and sweets so common at many of its Beach competitors, and, as a result, these days they’ve been left a little behind some of the fancier bakeries along Laskin Road or Va Beach Blvd. If you’re looking for a work of art for your next birthday cake, and want to spend $ 100+ for the cake, Plaza probably isn’t your spot. But if you’re just looking for a sugar fix with some great fresh cinnamon rolls(with raisins!), super-gooey Danish, or a wonderful mincemeat pie at Thanksgiving, by all means stop into Plaza, and experience baked goods like they were made before the arrival of The Cake Boss.

I know everyone loves this place — but every time I have a cake from here, it fails to impress me. Truthfully I think I have had homemade cakes that are better than from this bakery. They are always dry and crumbly and loaded with icing. There is way more icing than actual cake if you get a sheet cake from them to make it appear thicker. I think they have some nice looking stacked cake designs — we don’t usually order those. We usually just get standard Birthday Cake or what ever sheet cake or 10 inch round cakes. They look like average made at home cakes with a bit of roses or flowers on them that anyone with basic pipe bag talent could have done. On a side note — last time I was charged with getting a cake for someone I had pick up duty I did spring for a doughnut while I was waiting in line(for forever mind you!) That was pretty tasty and much better than the cakes I’ve had. I know you’re probably asking If I dislike this place WHY do I keep getting cake from there?! Well, flat out people in my family like them but it puzzles me as to why. I usually pass and don’t eat it at this point because it’s just not worth the calories anymore. But you order what the birthday person wants — Not what you want.

I have ordered numerous cakes from here for special occasions and they always deliver an excellent product, both in taste and presentation. They also have an excellent variety of pastries and cookies daily and their store always smells awesome. Their almond cake with butter cream frosting is spectacular, as are their chocolate cakes. The staff is always pleasant and helpful. I highly recommend!

I’ve ordered shower cakes from here and they are always beautiful and delicious. Their almond flavor cake is AmAzInG!!! They will pretty much design your cake to your specifications. I had a small two-tier baby cake made with pale blue fondant and white polka dots. Unfortunately, the only drawback was I wasn’t crazy about their ideas(they have a picture book that you can flip through). I had to search on the Internet and recommend something specific to them. I’ve made my own special occasion cakes for years, so I’m admittedly a cake snob. Bleh, I hate cheap sheet cakes(the kind you get in a grocery store or from a wholesale club). You can taste the additives and preservatives and there’s nothing special about them. You are ordering a cake for a special occassion, so make it special and get it from Plaza Bakery instead. The cost is a little higher but it’s totally worth it. And it’s not way over-priced by any means. The cost is just higher because you are getting custom work. Plaza Bakery also has individual desserts for sale in a bakery case. I’ve never had a chance to try any of them, but they look very tempting.

We went to Plaza Bakery for a cake tasting and it was sooo dry and tasteless. We went there for a wedding consultation and all they did was a give us a box of samples and set us on our way. We didn’t get to talk to anyone. I guess its not like we needed to after a bite of the sample. Literally the next day, the samples we took home were rock hard.

We used Plaza Bakery for a birthday cake and a wedding cake — both times they were very gracious and helpful with our planning(and really tolerant of last minute changes), and everyone raved about the gorgeous cakes. A wedding day SNAFU resulted in the cake topper being left behind at the bakery, and they were nice enough to bring it to us. A class act all around.

I love Plaza Bakery! I ordered a cake from them for my daughter’s birthday and it was spectacular. It looked good and tasted even better. I ordered the cake the night before I needed it and they were able to take my order with no trouble. The bakery is also filled with delicious cookies, fresh bread and other treats. I will not hesitate to use them in the future.
