Showcase at the Ritz Center

I just noticed the header on this says it’s closed. While that’s partially true, as «Showcase at the Ritz» (the same one in Philly, btw) is no longer operating at this location, the venue itself has never closed — it was bought/​sold by National Amusements, and now operates as «Rave Motion Cinemas», which is also a chain. Who knew?
Anyway, since the changeovers, some quality has suffered; mostly in the snack area. But then, they still do offer at the café bar things like cappucino, tea/​coffee, and cakes. The cakes ARE good, but at $ 4 avg a slice, I personally stick with the buck-​fitty biscotti.
The theater still shows current indie and foreign flicks, though not seemingly as many now as the Ritz at the Bourse. All in all, it’s still a decent theater, and hopefully it’s going to stay that way, regardless of ownership. Stay classy, old Ritz!

Basically like my favorite theater of all time because they have desserts and coffee in the lobby, big tall comfy seats (I’m tall so I can never rest my head back in other theaters), and it’s not ghetto. The only thing that would bring the Ritz up to a 5 star rating is if they had cuddle seats. You know, the ones where you can put the arm rest up and be close to your honey.

Has to be the best movie theater in South Jersey and perhaps Philly as well. You get a better, cleaner environment compares to most «mainstream» theaters, there’s a better snack bar plus a coffee bar, there’s much less kids/​teenagers compared to Loews or other theaters and the selection of movies is always better — you still get your blockbusters but you also get indie and foreign flicks…

I like this place better than any other theater I go to. If it wasn’t for the recent lifting of the ban on children after 7pm I’d see far more movies there. During a recent special showing of the ‘Deathnote one night only engagement’, a gaggle of 12 year old girls were so ridiculous that several guests left demanding a refund and the manager had to come in twice.
Dude, just throw them out. You’d be a hero to everyone else. Screw the warnings! When twenty different people tell you these people are idiots, trust them.
As far as food and such, the coffee bar is a nice touch, although I wish I could get a bigger iced coffee. 12oz is gone by the time the previews are and I’ve barely got my jitter on.
Prices are reasonable, an excellent selection of alternative and indie films (though I wish they had more) and generally pleasant staff, combined with nicely clean theaters and bathrooms make this a great place to see a flick.

This is a great theater. I have been to many theaters-​this is the best one I’ve ever been to. I mean a coffee bar-​how awesome is that!!! The popcorn is drop-​dead delicious. You never have to deal with young kids making lots of noise-​and normally only well-​behaved teens show up. The theaters are always very clean. They have the best seats ever! RECLINING!!! They usually don’t show the crap movies-​usually the best ones-​but they occasionally have those movies that are no good. I have always had good and friendly service! It is in a good location-​right near applebees and friendlys-​good pre-​movie stops. Next time you decide to go to see a movie, you should really check this theater out!!!

Overall, I think this place is great. I only come here when I’m visiting my boyfriend’s family, and that’s been many times now. This theater screens many movies that you wouldn’t expect to be screening in the suburbs. Apparently it used to be almost entirely indie and art films, although now they have more «blockbuster» movies as well.
Just the fact that the tickets are only $ 7 is a thrill for somebody from NYC, but I guess that shouldn’t factor into the review.
The lobby is very big and cozy, with couches and carpet and a big snack bar. The staff are friendly, and the theaters are good quality, with some very big screens and comfortabe seats with good viewing.
The crowd tends to be on average very good, better than the NYC crowd in general. I hardly see any kids around in the more «adult» films.

Reclining, cozy seats? Check.
Couches in the foyer? Check.
Snack bars offering two very different options? Check.
Obscure indie films? Check.
Excellent location? Check.
Very, very few (if any) annoying children? Check.
It all adds up to the Ritz being my absolute favourite cinema in the area.

I’ve been here a couple of times now so I feel like I can make an honest review. It’s one of the nicer theaters in SJersey/​Philly area that I’ve been to so far. It’s very clean, has great décor and ambient lighting. Those traits alone set it apart from pretty much every theater I’ve been to here except for the sister theater in Philly. It has a separate eating/​drinking section where you can sit with your coffee/​cookies/​confections and nosh away. The main concession area has the standard fare plus pretzel bits and a few other goodies. The popcorn is one of the best movie popcorns I’ve had in a while. Really good butter, and just enough salt that i didn’t feel the need to salt it myself (which usually ends in disaster. Whoever started the whole non-​salting the popcorn in the maker should be flogged.) The service was a little slow, but you have to also understand that it was prime time and there were six trillion people there as well. Unfortunately a woman in line didn’t understand that and kept bitching about the people behind the counter. I felt sorry for her date. Between her bitching about the servers and her bitching about how no one dresses appropriately for the movie, you could tell that he was in for a long night. I hope it was worth it dude.
The theater itself was very busy on a Saturday night. Tons of people were there, and yet I wasn’t jostled, wasn’t yelled over by obnoxious teenagers who feel that its their god given right to be heard. There was some person standing in the back near the ATM yakking away on the phone. Evidently she didnt’ feel the need to go outside like I did in order to spare everyone from her conversation. So much for politeness.
The theater itself was very clean, and had well spaced out chairs with the obligatory drink cup rests. While the sound was good, the picture was marred by either some scratches on the lens or on the screen. I couldn’t always see them, but at times when it went to a snowy scene or an ice scene I could see them. A tad annoying to say the least.
The bathrooms were pretty decent. Yeah they didn’t have paper towels at every sink, but given the crowds, its not surprising. Sadly I’ve been at far worse places here in the Philly area.
Overall I had a pleasant time. I’ll go back again. I might even hit up Tunes…

Of all the movie theaters in a 30 minute Jersey-​radius, this is by far my favorite. Although… after going from the Ritz 16 to «Showcase at the Ritz,» things aren’t as good as they once were.
My main complaint is the bathroom sitch. During two recent visits, the cleanliness of said b-​room was questionable and paper towels were a thing of the past. Maybe they are «going green» or something but I really hate touching the door with my wet hand. Bring back the paper towels – I promise to only use one per trip!
Despite the bathroom issue, this theater is still my preferred place for movie-​watching. There are always a few indie flicks that you definitely won’t catch at other suburban theaters. And thankfully, whatever rule they have about excluding young children still exists, because I continue to enjoy my cinema in peace, without anything too obnoxious going on around me.
It should definitely be noted that the popcorn here is waaaaaay better than at other theaters. I suspect it’s because it’s popped fresh and/​or laced with cocaine because my good intentions of «just a diet soda» seem to fly out the window once I get my first whiff of buttery goodness. On the one in five visit when I do maintain my self-​control, the coffee bar rocks my world.
Showcase might not be The Ritz of yore, but it still blows other theaters out of the water.

Yeah, it’s called the Ritz Showcase because it no longer deserves to be called the Ritz. Now full of rude, obnoxious teens and twats, they sell little bags of popcorn and show mainstream movies just like any other place. Total crap. New Jersey did not need another one of those.

Sixteen screens of pure movie bliss. Oh, and the popcorn’s not bad either (i.e., the best around). Sure, there are more Ritz theaters in the area, but the Ritz Voorhees is one of the few places that normally EZ-​PASS-​shy Center City Philadelphians will travel to just for the adult atmosphere and laid-​back style. See, we suburbanites have something that you uppity city folk don’t have: SPACE. Please peruse the halls of this palace and view all the classic movie posters (no arcade games), or have a seat in the café (yes, CAFE) with a latte (and a book… for as long as you want) as this fantastic theater is a tribute to the real film fan!
