«IFTHESOLEMANWAS A DR., HE’D BE A PLASTICSURGEON« There are 4 essential qualities to any successful service business, with the obvious exception of The Registry of Motor Vehicles.
1. A savvy and courteous staff. 2. Being truly motivated to the best work. 3. A convenient location. 4. Reasonable and competitive rates. The owner of Sole Man in Waban, Newton, wins hands down in all 4 categories. With over 30 years experience of quality shoe restoration, he’s become the best I’ve seen in this area. In the 70’s and 80’s I would only go to Gene’s in Waban. Fortunately, when Gene retired about 18 years ago, the Sole Man moved to Waban from Newton Ctr. and has maintained those high standards. He’s located in-between Starbuck’s and the Post Office, right across the parking lot for the MBTA Greenline. From Prada to Dada, and from Manolo to Shinola. Well, maybe not the Shinola. Why is Soleman the best? Because in addition to his honed skills, typical of a skilled artisan, he always takes the extra time to actually listen to you and your individual concerns and expectations, knowing full well, that no 2 shoes or their owners are ever the same. He thinks out-side the box when necessary. Many time’s in the past he resurrected Tod’s or other great driving shoes for me, by adding an almost invisible sole, thus at least doubling there life. Currently, listening is somewhat of a dying art form, but you’ll still find it at the very best places. So here’s to the art of listening. Sadly for myself, it’s a quality that my girlfriend seems reluctant to be bothered with.

The sole man is phenomenal. He’s the only one I trust with my shoes and with my finance’s shoes. Once, I brought in a really really old pair… I liked their style, but was convinced they probably could not have life breathed into them again. I brought them to him, and he confirmed what I had assumed. The way the shoes were constructed, and the way they were worn down, there was little he could do for me. What I appreciated was the way he took the time to explain why that was the case. In doing so, he’s earned my loyalty as a customer. He knows his stuff, and is dedicated to help you keep your shoes looking in great shape. Make note, he does seem to go on vacation and isn’t open on Mondays. And, he’s cash only.

If you own a high quality shoe and need new heels or a repair this is the man to fix them. His work is excellent and can be a little pricey but really worthi it for a good pair of shoes. I drive out of my way to bring my shoes here!

This man is AH-MAZ-ING. Not the cheapest shoe repair you will find, but definitely of the highest quality. This man has grown up in his business and he truly cares about his customers. He will invent magical ways to fix your problem, and he truly takes the time to make everything perfect. I can just picture him, crouched over a minuscule stiletto heel, shaving down the rubber cap so it matches EXACTLY with the original heel. He is also one of the more honest business-people I have met — once I came in asking to re-sole a pair of shoes(which I am sure would have cost $$) but he flat-out told me I didn’t need to do that, I could just add a rubber adhesive to the bottom of the shoes and fix the problem with just $ 6 or so. He is basically the person I come to when I have a certain repair, etc. that CANNOT get messed up — and he has never disappointed me. One tiny thing to be wary of — his store hours are somewhat limited and not always consistent — he is closed on Sundays and Mondays and closes pretty early, from what I remember. Best to call him before you head over and ensure he will be around when you’re planning on stopping by. Seriously, GO!
