Exotic variety of orchids for the connoisseur(not for those shopping for showy supermarket orchids as probably those who gave a negative review). Met by friendly, gracious Kathleen. I was overwhelmed by choices. Then Roy Takunaga, orchid breeder extraordinaire arrived. He advised me on what hybrids would do well in Northern California. He patiently answered questions and educated me on what to do to get orchids to rebloom. He had grown some of the orchids from seed. Amazing educator and grower. H&R ship to the mainland and foreign customers and also exhibit at major orchid shows on the mainland. This is the place for those enthralled with growing orchids!

As far as orchid nurseries go this is by far the best and well taken care of in my humble opinion. Very little weeds for such a large nurseries. Lots of community pots and very reasonable prices. Great hybrids and species. If your looking for unique, well grown plants this is your nursery. The other negative comments about H&R should be considered but shouldnt chase you away from a great place. They are orchid growers not babysitters. 5 stars for a huge selection of well grown orchids!!! Cant express how impressed i was with this nursery. Its a must go to for sure!

After visiting other nurseries in the area, I would say this is by far the worst. The lady who works here has the worst customer service I have ever seen. Curt and rude, she treated us like idiots and made us wait on her. I would highly suggest you do not come here.

I hated this place. I don’t know how anyone could give this a good rating. The selection is poor, and worse, the lady running the place has horrible service. She treats you like a child, constantly following you and nagging. Go to Koba’s Nursery instead.

The Orchid industry in Hawaii has been hit hard by globalization. Taiwan can offer orchids pennies to the dollar. There have been a few law suits against the US Dept of Agriculture by the local Orchid Industry, but they were all lost. H & R Nurseries is a nursery that doesn’t quite have to worry about this all too much as their clientele is not your typical buying-generic-orchids-for-a-pretty-centerpiece customer; they specialize hybrids and species rather than Orchid clones. Nationwide and in Japan, they’ve really garnered collectors of rare Orchids. 3 times a year, they dramatically mix up their inventory list– which is quite productive considering that most nurseries will update their inventory once every 5 years if you’re lucky(Orchids take about 3 years to go from seed to sellable plant). The species they specialize most in is Cattleya family, particularly Cattleya Amethystoglossa. Their Amethystoglossa’s are notorious for gathering many AOS(American Orchid Society) awards. Their hybrids are also of high quality, most of which also win awards. I recommend going onto and doing a search for«H&R orchids» Their prices for species are a little steep, but that’s just the price you have to pay if you want one-of-a-kind rather than generic. Random pet peeve about a lot of orchid nurseries, many of them are unorganized and unlabeled. H&R is so amazingly organized, they have seperate sections for Hybrids, Species, and Clones. Every one of their plant are tagged. And the sections are arranged in alphabetical order. For a true orchid lover, this is without a doubt the best place on the island to acquire orchids.
