Absolutely stunning lookout. The 3.1 mile hike from trailhead to lookout is completely worthwhile. For us, it was a tough hike after some rain the day before — lots of muddy spots, slow hiking to avoid slippage. Walking/trekking poles helped a ton.(PROTIP: People leave walking sticks at the trailhead). The total round trip hike(6.2 miles) took us 5 hours &6 minutes. On the way back, it was raining lightly but consistently so the trail got even worse, but it’s definitely doable. I would rate it at a mid-level difficulty.

Awa’awapuhi was a good hike but Nualolo is a better hike and the overlook is 10x better(you can see the entire Napali coast line from nualolo). BTW — Nualolo is only 3.75 miles one-way(not 5) and if you want the best hike take Nualolo to cliff trails to Awa’awapuhi(full loop).

Checked in at the Koke’e Museum to ask about the Na Pali lookout trails. Both the Awa’awapuhi and the Nualolo Trails go out to the coast and considered«strenuous», but the clerk told us that Nualolo was 5 miles out and seriously«stairmaster from hell» quality on the way back in. So we took the Awa’awapuhi which is only 3.25 miles out and a little less severe in the uphill on the way back in. Wow, I workout and cycle very regularly and my glutes were feeling the strain! Well worth the trip though. The view at the lookout is spectacular, but we were lucky that the clouds decided to lift a bit when we got there. Really enjoyed the hike and the views. Of course, there were the ever present Kauai chickens even at the lookout!

There are 2 ways to get there. By Nualolo Trail(between cabins and Kokee Lodge), or Awaawapuhi trail near 17 mm(past Kokee Lodge). We have been doing the Awaawapuhi trail when we come here. Awesome view of Na Pali and Forest reserve. You find mile markers by each quarter mile, that seems to make the hike easier for us. Unilocal365 — 244⁄365
