Average work and many lies My dad is in the Construction Industry and I worked many of his jobs so I know quite a bit about quality work. I got my asphalt driveway replaced with concrete pavers by Mass Paving & Masonry in Wakefield and had a terrible experience. Their goal was simply to use cheap products, do quick and sloppy work, take my money, tell many lies and then not guarantee their product(supposedly a 5-year, 100% satisfaction warranty). I reviewed the paver type and the type of sand in between pavers with Tom Jr., and he promised to use polymeric sand to help bind pavers together. They charged an extra $ 500 for pavers saying that paver type we chose was more expensive, even though they said we could choose any type from brochare they gave us. This was their first lie in a string of many. On their website and in the contract it states that there is no money down until the job is 100% complete. After they ripped up asphalt and spread around the gravel that was already there(they did not purchase or bring in any more to make it 8″ thick as promised), Tom Jr. said they would not continue work or order pavers until we wrote a check for $ 4k. Thus the no money down until work completed was simply a lie. He said it would take at least 3 days to complete driveway in a scheme to maximize their labor charges, it took only 1 day. They used stone dust/crushed granite as paver base, unilock does not even warranty their pavers unless sand is used as base. It rained on the installation day and the crushed granite got wet and uneven but they laid pavers on top of it anyway. They put concrete over drain covers at base of driveway that I had to chisel out the following day. They scratched almost every paver and broke several when they tamped them down. They did not put anything over tamper to soften vibration and minimize damage as most quality paving companies would have done. The most ridiculous part of the whole experience was that they used ‘play sand’ in between the pavers, even though Tom Jr. promised polymeric sand. This is a rookie mistake that professional company would not make. When i questioned Tom Jr. why they used a cheap unacceptable product that will wash away in first rain storm, he said they used mostly the good stuff and only 2 bags of play sand on top of the good stuff. He then demanded final payment and I said it was too dark to inspect work(I was concerned how play sand would hold up) and I would send him balance after I looked at project in day light, maybe after a rainstorm, and was 100% satisfied. He refused to leave my property until we paid balance saying his crew needed to be paid. Later on in the evening, my wife found 8 empty bags of play sand(not 2 like Tom Jr. said) in our trash barrels and consulted our neighbor who witnessed them use only play sand in between pavers, which of course almost completely washed away within a few days after a rain storm. There was over 100lbs of sand at base of driveway that I had to shovel up. I called Tom Jr. the next day, called him on his lie and mentioned that we found 8 empty play sand bags in our trash. He then had the audicity to say«we are putting in a sand box for one of our jobs». That was a new one for me, a paving company installing a sandbox. The lies just kept rolling off his tongue. I then told him that a neighbor saw the whole thing at which point he agreed to put polymeric sand($ 20/bag) and remove the cheap play sand($ 3/bag). Two weeks later and no correction of problem, the surface of driveway was becoming uneven due to wet base and improper product in between pavers, so that pavers were not locking into place as they should. Tom Sr. said he would take it on as his special project to fix. This never happened. After several follow up calls by myself and my wife and them saying how«busy» they were, Tom Jr. said 8 bags of polymeric sand were in his truck. My wife said she would come retrieve it, he declined of course likely because they were not there. We just kept getting the runaround and were extremely frustrated. A month after the sloppy job was attempted and still no product or 100% guarantee honored, I made one last call on Wednesday afternoon, and stated that if the polymeric sand was not dropped off in my driveway by Friday afternoon that I would write several reviews describing my experience. Tom Jr. promised they would be there. No surprise, no bags dropped off by promised day. The following week we bought 8 bags at $ 120 and did the work ourselves. This was money and work that should have been performed by Mass Paving. Do not trust this company that is only interested in using cheap products and lying to the customer.
