Restaurant is closed. It is now Glyn’s Jamaica Restaurant. Which is pretty good.

You’d never believe there was a restaurant in the back of the Big Lots parking lot, but tucked away in the farthest reaches there’s this little shop. I went there for lunch one day to try something new, I think since then they’ve changed owners and I haven’t been back yet, but they had a lunch special going at the time. I picked 3 items from their buffet type area and paid something along the lines of 6 – 8 bucks. Not a bad deal. Thing was I didn’t know what the hell I was eating. I just asked the guy, the husband of the chef, to pick what he thought was good. Pig skin, ear, and a chicken dish later, I was happily full. With a place like this and with foods so dissimilar to what you’re used to, you just have to go with the judgement of the employees and put your fate in their hands. Good thing I did, I really enjoyed this place.

As some of you may know, I am half filipino(or blaki-pino as homage to my American part). For a while, I didn’t realize what I missed in California(or for that matter, the Philippines) until I moved to Georgia. Which is dearth of Filipino restaurants — or rather, none at all. Mind you, there is apparently a growing Filipino community, but not enough to sustain a single restaurant, so I had to be content with making my own Filipino dishes(which, fortunately, I can get some of the ingredients from I-Town) for the time being. So when I heard of this place from my co-worker, I was intrigued. It makes that it would be there, since Warner-Robins is a military base(and many Filipino-Americans serve in the arm forces), so it is likely to have a concentrated community there. Being new at the time to Georgia, I am a little leery of venturing out of the city(I like being inside the blue perimeter circle, thank you very much). At any event, I was about to head back from Jacksonville, FL(not terribly Unilocal-worthy in most respects — In fact, if it falls to the sea, I am not sure if it would be missed anyway) when I realize that I should be able to hit Warner Robins at around lunch time. So using my Iphone, I googled the address, then headed back to Georgia. At the 4 – 5 hour mark, I exited into Warner-Robins. I wasn’t expecting much — I know of someone* from there and if the character of the town is judged by one person, then Warner Robins should not be anything impressive anyway i.e. small. Of course, I was wrong. WR is bigger than I thought(and place more cunningly hidden that I anticipated); I ended up spending a half hour looking for the darn place. After risking legal and physical liabilities from using Google Maps on my IPhone while driving, I figured out that it was someplace in a large mini-hall that houses Big Lots. So I drove into Nestor and then made my left into the mall and as I made my right, I can see the place in my sight. I parked and entered. On my left was a shelf of groceries that you usually can’t find anywhere else except in I-Town — Filipino food and some asian stuff that is used with it. On my right, are more items, plus counter of hot food, include familiar favorites such as Sinigang, Chicken and pork Adobo and Pancit. In the middle was a seating area where you can eat and watch Filipino TV back home. I ordered the Sinigang and the pork Adobo, got myself a dash of shrimp paste aka Bagoong and ate and enjoyed myself watching the TV Show that on(which, surprisingly enough, I am able to understand a bit, being not a native speaker. Then again, its Filipino TV, which is like the combination of the worse parts of American, Spanish and Japanese TV — and bring it to a whole new level; whether it is up or down is up to interpretation). I bought some stuff to take home, had a nice conversation with the owner(she was surprised how I hear about this place) and went on my way(after giving my contact info to one of the guys interested in my company’s business). Verdict? When you need something to remind you of back home or if you like a little Filipino cooking, stop by here. Be prepared for the commute, though. *I kid, I kid — if you are reading this, I still luv ya, sis,. .. . have you tried Sushi yet? :D
