Cockeye BBQ

We have gone to this location twice now and found it by accident when my girlfriends mother brought us a meal from here after her surgery. I got a pulled pork sandwich with an amazing bbq sauce that was had a good smokey taste. My girlfriend got the same thing but got some sides of mac n cheese and jo jo’s. Very tasted and seasoned well, portions on the sides were a bit small but overall this is a hidden Gem and like other Unilocal reviews say it could rival hot dog shoppe and sunrise status in the area.

We celebrated father’s day one day early because my dad was going to visit his dad on father’s day. He was in the mood for BBQ and wanted something that was close to us and he found this place. It was only about 15 – 20 minutes away from us. We decided to try it. First the parking lot was just redone by the looks of it and so there are no lines marking where to park. It’s also a fairly small lot. We walked in and it’s a fairly small place with some seating. It is not a sit down and order from a wait staff sort of place. It is an order at the counter and if you sit in dining they are supposed to bring it out to you or you stand around and wait for them to call your number.
They have a small menu which is fine. I don’t remember seeing the prices for their canned/​bottled beverages anywhere, so we did not know how much we paid for our drinks until after we got the receipt. I know for sure they were not on the menu. They do let you have unlimited water, I think. It could have been iced tea or lemonade that you pour into a cup. I can’t really remember. In any case the prices for them were pretty much what I expected them to be.
Anyway, my mom decide to have a fried chicken sandwich and fries, I decided on their Pitmaster burger with fries, and my dad got a cup of Brunswick stew, baked beans, and the chopped brisket sandwich. My dad enjoyed his meal. My opinion was that they could have added a little more brisket to his sandwich and the side of baked beans could have been a little bigger. To me it looked like just two scoops and they were gone. The stew was a perfect portion and he said he liked it. It’s because of this they get 1 star at all. My moms’ sandwich had two chicken tenders, which were not all that big. I believe I saw two slices of tomato, which were perfect size, and some lettuce. We asked for no mayo because she isn’t too crazy about mayo. She said her bun was cold, as in just thawed from freezer, and the chicken was not as hot as she expected it to be. I believe she said it was luke warm. Now, my buns were pretty much the same as hers. I expected thin burger, it was a ¼ pounder after all, but it was supposed to have brisket on top. I got one small slice of brisket. It was topped with a fair amount of thin crispy onions and BBQ sauce. It had cheese on it as well. The sauce was all I tasted. If I hadn’t seen the small slice of brisket I never would have known it was there. All I tasted was sauce. It was not worth $ 8.99. Now to the fries. They came out in a bag. The amount of fries was perfect if not for the fact they were soggy/​limpy as heck. The only good thing about them was that they were not overly salty. My family does not use/​eat a lot salt.
I saw a couple of people com into the dining area after they placed their order. The one woman behind the counter saw them and told them their order was up and the man got up to get their order even though it should have been brought out to them. Either they are regulars or this place is very inconsistent because it was another 5 minutes before our order was brought out to us and we got there before them. I wonder if our order was sitting at the counter waiting for us to pick it up before someone realized they should have brought it out to us. Don’t tell us you’re going to bring it out to us if you expect us to pick it up.
On the bottom of their receipt it says «slow food… fast!». That was not my experience. One last note before I end this review. About half an hour later I started to feel sick. I’m not sure if it was because it was extremely hot and humid that day or the food, but I certainly will not be going back. If my dad wants to he is on his own.

Food is very good! Cheesy potatoes are the best! Portions are a little small but not overly priced. The only issue I had was that no one would pick up the phone (just kept ringing) so we had to go in and order takeout. They weren’t busy either so I’m not sure what the issue was with the phone.

Excellent BBQ! Fast friendly service, and delicious food, I will definitely be back for more. I had pulled pork and brisket with Cajun fries and corn casserole, everything was great, but the corn casserole was the best I’ve ever had.

Cockeye has the potential to one day achieve Hot Dog Shoppe/​Sunrise status in the Warren area.
The bbq is absolutely amazing. Everything I have had there has been good, but the brisket especially is absolutely out of this world. The smoky flavor, burnt tips, and amazing sauce all come together to achieve perfection, and I’d recommend it both on a sandwich or as dinner meal. Be sure to combine it with their amazing cheesy potatoes.
I moved away to CA, and Cockeye has joined Hot Dog Shoppe as one of the «must-do’s» when I am home in Ohio. It is really nice seeing a local restaurant do well, and I am excited to see Cockeye become a Warren staple!

This was a nice eating spot that I’ve heard good things about, and finally got a chance to try. Walking in was pretty self explanatory and the staff was pleasant right out the gate: you walk in, order your food & drinks at the counter (readable paper menu or overhead menu display), pay the cashier, grab whatever plastic utensils/​napkins/​condiments you need, seat yourself where ever you like (if you’re dining in), when they bring out your food and call your order number, you give ‘em a wink, thumbs up, and lick your lips and they set your tray in front of you to enjoy. NICE. I enjoyed the cat fish dinner with a very tasty (sweet) tarter sauce, fries, and cole slaw. The fish was lightly breaded, cooked well, and flavorful. The fries and Cole slaw were pretty good as well. The kiddos enjoyed honey BBQ wings, that were good, and a side order of hush puppies, Mmmm. The staff, and working owners, are really nice and are appreciative of the business. As people left and cleaned up their own tray, the staff kept the dining area pretty clean. All in all, a nice eating spot for dine-​in or take out, in a relaxed & clean environment, with good food and friendly service.

On our way to the National Packard Museum, we looked for something local for lunch. The reviews were right on — this is a great place! We were reminded of other BBQ franchises when we stepped up to order. But we were pleasantly surprised with the portions and quality of the food. I had the brisket and pulled pork and my wife had the ½-​slab of ribs. The meats were tasty and moist on their own and not slathered with BBQ sauce. Good portions and served in a takeout box — they know you won’t toss out your leftovers!

One of the best places to eat at in Warren. My boyfriend and I can’t get enough of it. Our favorite is the mess plate with fries, so good! And the staff here are very helpful and friendly.

Not pleased with taste. When I pulled into parking lot the first thing I noticed was I didn’t smell smoke. If you are smoking your meat you can smell it. It tasted like it was cooked in an oven. I can bake my own meat. If you want baked meat the taste was fine but if you want bar b que this is not it. They say they smoke the meat but I don’t think so. Was EXTREMELY diasppointed. Will not go back

The meat is exceptional here. Got the brisket, rib, and pulled pork. The brisket was top tier. The sauce is a very sweet so if that’s what your prefer you’re gonna be in heaven. The sides were solid and the staff and service was above and beyond nice. Definitely one of the top BBQ places in the Youngstown/​Warren area.

Service is fast, friendly and helpful for a first-​timer.
The food quality was excellent, taste was fantastic, and portion sizes were over-​sized (you may not finish it all)
The prices were reasonable given the food quality and portion sizes.
The only very minor complaint is that the drinks are not fountain drinks, rather can/​bottle. But that is not a huge deal, just not what we are used to, culturally speaking.

This is a great addition to the Warren area. Great staff and the owner is very friendly and welcoming. Good food… love the corn casserole and cheesy potatoes.

First time here today. To be entirely honest, I was completely blown away. You can tell they put one hell of an investment of time and money into this place before you even order your food. When you think of BBQ joints, you don’t really think «legitimate sit down restaurant».
1. Literally everything in the store was spotless.
2. There are monitors showing items they offer.
3. The outside looks pretty much like the old chicken coop but with their own ads. Depending on who you are, this can be good or bad. For me, it brings nostalgia. For others, on the outside, it might appear to be some dumpy, trashy, pale yellow BBQ place. It really reminds me of Mizu in this way. In a good way. I really hope this place doesn’t go the way of every other restaurant that’s been there recently.
4. You can tell they’re active in the community with all the plaques and local high school memorabilia around. That’s pretty cool.
Now to the food.
I’m not a BBQ expert, but the brisket is amazing. To be fair though, I haven’t had anything else. I had both the brisket burger, and the brisket sandwich. I much preferred the brisket sandwich, as it seemed more like it came right out of the smoker and onto my sandwich. Once I opened the wrapper of the brisket sandwich, I saw what appeared to be burnt meat. I couldn’t be more wrong. Honestly that’s the most delicious part of the brisket. This sandwich was awesome.
The burger was very good too, but I’m not sure I’d order it again as the brisket sandwich was like 2 bucks cheaper or something, and seemed just as filling. Also, their BBQ sauce is delicious.
TL;DR
Brisket was delicious. Clean place. Fresh food. Cheaper than expected.

We got take-​out from here, and it was great. When we ordered on the phone, they said to come in 5 to 10 minutes, and it was really ready that quickly. Though we ordered less than an hour before closing (on a weeknight), they weren’t out of anything. I loved my brisket, and our chicken, pulled pork, mac and cheese, and joe joes (like giant fried potato wedges) were good too.

After hearing from friends that the food was good we decided to try it. The food was great. They ran out of brisket but we were a little late so we can understand them running out. Love the bbq sauce. Everyone at my table was happy with their food. We will go back again and again only earlier. Would recommend.

Stopped here for dinner on a whim with my husband. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the Food was amazing best BBQ I’ve had in a long time and the Homemade Mac & Cheese was probably the best I’ve ever had. (Sorry Grandma) Prices were very reasonable and portions were very good sized we will definitely be going back

After calling to find out their restaurant hours we arrived at 7pm to have the cashier ramble on to the customer in front of me about them being out of much of the menu.
I stepped up to hear the same explanation of how they were out of pulled chicken, out of brisket, and had two whole slabs of rids or two half chickens left .
The customer in front of me walked out without ordering as I also did.
Imagine if the Sherwin Williams ran out of paint. You only have one thing your selling., FOOD
Now you cost me an hour of my time & 6 bucks in gas, I’ll never come back!

The food was great, staff was so nice. It runs kind a like five guys burgers and fries you get your food wait for to come up and sit down. we had a great time.

It’s very good! I’ve had the pulled pork there twice now & it’s as good as any pulled pork I’ve had. The meat is so tender & melts in your mouth & I love the sweet barbecue sauce. It’s a must try for anyone who enjoys good barbecue in the area!

Get there early. Food is amazing. Staff is very friendly. Pretty much everything you want in a local BBQ joint.
