10th Street Auto Repair

10^th Street Auto came through for me. They read my prior review and reached out to me and apologized. They fixed my cruise control – which, they tell me, was not connected to my brake light after all. It was very generous of them to do it for free. They even threw in an oil change. They’re 3 blocks from house so they’re very convenient. I’m glad we «reconciled» and I’m sure they are too – I have a cruddy 93 Nissan Sentra that always needs repairs so I can give them more business in the future! Thanks, Kevin and crew.

I took my car here for a break fluid leak. They claimed they fixed the leak and bled the break lines but that I would also need my master cylinder and Something else replaced to fully fix the problem (I could tell it still wasn’t right like they said while driving bc the break was still soft but they stopped the leak) the parts they were quoting were over $ 1000 according to them.
I took my car to my dad’s mechanic about 2 hours away the next chance I had and they said a break caliper was wrongly installed and that was the only problem I had and that there was no way they wouldn’t have caught this if they bled the break system like they claimed they did.
They probably thought, seeing a young woman, I didn’t know anything about cars and I was an easy target to make a bunch of money. This is terrible and because of it I would not suggest them to anyone.

Never going back. They can’t be trusted.
My wife dropped her car off for an oil change and tube up. She doesn’t know much about cars and asked them to call me if they had questions about the job. I eventually get a call from the shop that I need brakes, rotors and a timing belt. Huh? I was confused why all this work would need to be done if my wife simply asked for an oil change and tune up. I was told that my wife agreed to a 100,000 mile inspection. After I declined the timing belt and brake job, I was told that my car would be ready in a couple of hours and the total would be $ 500!!! I called my wife to confirm that she agreed to a 100,000 mile inspection and she didn’t. She said they described some of the things they would look at on the car but she thought it was part of the tune up. Again, she doesn’t know much about cars but why would she ask for a $ 500 service we don’t need. They basically tried to take advantage of her limited car knowledge. And the best part is they said the car didn’t need to be tuned up!
We were quoted over $ 2,000 in work that needed to be done but no way was I going to allow them to work on my car ever again. Not after they tried to take advantage of my wife. I took my car to another shop and was told my car is fine!
We came here for 3 years for basic car services and they seemed like a good neighborhood shop. They lost a customer, with 2 cars. Peace out.

They say they «guarantee all their parts» well I had my radiator and hoses replaced then my car started to act up again. I guess I shouldn’t have said to just get my car on the road back to Maryland since I am not from the area. The owner did say I had other problems with my vehicle. I did expect, however, with replacing the radiator and hoses that all the hoses would be replaced? I had to go to another shop about a month later and get the rest fixed! I know my car is junk. It’s donated now. But still, fix everything, especially if you know my grandmother is paying and not myself… duh! Thanks for taking my car not on an appointment and timely but I got screwed and so did my grandmother.

My car was making a weird noise to the point where I decided it was time to take the car in for a check-​up. I looked up car places in the Capitol Hill/​H Street area and am so glad I found this place! I came in Monday morning without an appointment, the owner greeted me with a friendly face and took in my car and my minor issue with the muffler was fixed within an hour. I am so pleased with the customer service and definitely recommend this place!

Nice, knowledgable and efficient! Suffice it to say, when i got to my car on this fine Monday morning and noticed I had a flat tire, I figured my entire work day was pretty much shot. Lucky for me, I discovered 10^th street auto, and the guys there were able to plug the hole in my tire immediately and get me on my way. The price was reasonable, and the guys were friendly and helpful.

I dropped my car off for the first time at the garage to have the oil changed. Previously I paid anywhere from $ 90 — $ 120. I was delighted when I saw the charge of $ 60 and an apology from the owner that the oil filter for a BMW Z3 is a special order and cost so much more than a typical filter.

Great auto service. Contacted me regularly with updates on different test results and before any they completed any work. Also very knowledgeable and was able to explain everything to me so I understood. Good service, I will continue to take my vehicle there for any service needs

Kevin was enormously helpful. Not only did he keep my car the entire day and didn’t charge me for diagnosing the problem, but he talked through ways I could talk to the dealership to advocate for them covering the uncovered issue under my existing warranty. I really appreciated his candor and customer service. I will be recommending to my DC friends from now on to come here.

This Service Made My Day/Month…Surprisingly I am thrilled with the service I got related to my car problems. I am always unhappy when I have to deal with car repairs because this is an area about which I know absolutely nothing. Therefore when my car made groaning noises after a couple of tight turns, I considered ignoring the situation because other than the noises, my car, which I take to the dealer for regular check-​ups, was running smoothly like a clock. However, my husband said I should get it checked, and I began to have visions of my steering mechanism failing, so I decided to do so. I live in the city where there are no car dealerships, so for the past 5 years, I have been traveling about 45 minutes for service to the dealership where I purchased my PT Cruiser new in 2008. I was comfortable with the service rep, but I was tired of the trek, and there were a couple of instances where I was not happy with the service (once they failed to tighten something during the service and my oil leaked out). Since I had recently had my routine service done, I was not looking forward to returning to the burbs so soon re the steering issue, so I decided to call 10^th Street Auto, which is very near my house. My neighbor had previously recommended them and I am so glad I called because my experience was wonderful. When I explained my concern, the owner, Kevin, immediately asked if I was experiencing trouble steering to which I answered no. I felt good about his inquiry because it indicated to me that he was concerned that I might be driving a car which was unsafe, and that he probably would have told me so if that were the case. I was given an appointment; they don’t take walk ins because the place is small, on Capitol Hill in a residential area, and they can only accommodate a certain number of vehicles at a time. I took my car in at 9:30 and had a very pleasant exchange with Kevin. By 11:30 he called me and said they found nothing wrong, except for some low «fluid levels» which they topped off, and that my bill was $ 16 bucks! He said the extreme weather we are having may be affecting our vehicles, but stressed that if the sounds recur, to bring the car back. I cannot believe that a car repair shop passed up an opportunity to get at least $ 100 from an unsuspecting customer… maybe I am dreaming. Suffice it to say, my treks to the suburban dealer are over and 10^th Street Auto Repair has a new customer. Kevin explained to me how they can service so many different makes and models of vehicles since everything is done by computer diagnostics these days. Now I know why folks always say it is better not to use a dealer for repairs if you can find a good auto repair and service shop. Finally, there are a couple of reviews indicating less than satisfactory interaction with the owner, but the person I interacted with was extremely good humored both by phone and in person. We all have off days, but I felt really good about my experience and interpersonal interaction with this gentleman who seems very passionate about providing good service and auto repair.

For the last five years, this is the only place I took my car. I loved it – but not any more. Recently, Mark, the guy who oversaw the shop, left. The new guy was extremely rude to me the last two times that I went to 10^th Street Auto. He chastised me for trying to fix my car myself (I only checked the fuses… nothing major.) He replaced a light in the front of my car without my asking him to do it, something that I could have easily done myself. He said the next time that I brought my car to the shop I needed to be prepared to pay for major charges to get my vehicle up to speed – around $ 1,000. I decided to take my car elsewhere.

I’ve gone to this place a couple of times because it’s close to my house and easy to get to. I brought my car in for an oil change and they called saying I need new windshield wipers, and back brakes (as they were at 20%). The price of the brakes/​wipers/​oil change/​tire rotation/​labor– $ 525. I only had the oil change/​tire rotation done which came to $ 84.
The next weekend I was going to my parents house, so I took my car to our family friend mechanic who always does our car work. He told me that my brakes did not need to be changed, as they were at 30%.
To top it off, I was the only car they had in that day, and they called saying they wanted to shut down early and if they could leave my car outside (locked) with the key on the tire… in DC. I agreed, as I understand it’s a small business, but I did not feel comfortable with it, so I left work early to pick up my car before it was stolen.
I’ve had a lot of work done here before, and now fully believe they have been ripping me off. They do do good, but the prices are very high.

Just had to drop a quick review on Unilocal.They have done a great job with my car. Right after I get my oil changed here (several times), I remark out loud «wow my car is driving better.» I have recently gotten an oil change elsewhere on Pennsylvania Ave. SE and felt like my car was not driving well afterwards. Also, had great brake work here. Both the brake work and oil changes have been priced affordably in my opinion. I usually seek out reasonably priced mechanics, and this is the only one where I feel like I’m getting great quality too.
Unfortunately I moved across town and now I’ll probably look for something comparable to 10^th St. Auto up here. But if I can’t find anything (and I may not because this is a pretty high standard) I will be making the trek for good auto service. So far, it’s the best experience I’ve had in DC and I’ve been to quite a few places (usually seeking them out based on Unilocal ratings).

My window fell off (for lack of a better way to say it) as I was driving into work. As soon as I got in, I did a Google search for repair shops nearby and called 10^th Street Auto because of the Unilocal Reviews. I was pleased when the shop’s owner, Kevin, told me that although his techs were super busy, he would take my car in ASAP because a car with no window parked on the streets of DC worried him.
When the repairs were more costly than originally expected, Kevin took the time to show me the piece that had to be repaired and explain why the cost differential was what it was. His disposition was cheery and friendly each time I interacted with him and his technicians did a great job on my beloved car.
I am an extremely happy customer of 10^th Street Auto. I felt treated as a valued customer even though I was a first-​time «emergency» visitor, and felt that Kevin was completely honest and upfront with me throughout (my fellow ladies know how important this feeling is when dealing with mechanics). I will definitely be back the next time something needs fixin’ on my olé girl.

Several more repairs plus oil changes after my first review, and still going strong! I haven’t found a reason to take my car anywhere else!

I called to get an appointment for my sick car and the guy who answered the phone was rude, laughed at me, and was so impatient he tried to hang up on the conversation. Too bad I won’t be able to write a review of their actual work because their customer service was so bad.

I am so happy that I picked 10^th St Auto Repair to do some simple maintenance. They uncovered a pretty large issue with my tires while rotating them and were thorough in their explanation of the problem, how it can be fixed, and a breakdown of what the full repair would cost. They were incredibly helpful and patient with my questions. All of this in addition to the fact that I brought my car in for service on Thursday ¹²⁄₂₉ and it was completely fixed by Monday ½ is amazing. I had mentioned that I would ideally need my car back on Monday before this issue was uncovered and they did everything they could to meet those needs. I honestly dont know if the cost would have differed elsewhere, but I am happy to pay a little bit more to support a small business that has great workers and owners.

I’m the daughter of a mechanic and he usually fixes my car, but when I broke down in DC, I had no choice but to have someone else look at it (Dad’s in MI). This was back in 2008, but I believe I found 10^th Street Auto Repair on Unilocal originally.
Mike and Mark were great. I even made them talk to my dad on the phone before I would let them touch my car. They were fair and had great rates. My dad was extremely impressed with their hourly labor rate. They were actually cheaper than my Dad’s dealership in Northern Michigan!
I always make other mechanics speak with my dad to ensure I’m not being ‘had’, but I feel confident that they wouldn’t have taken advantage of me anyway. They’re both very mild mannered and polite. I know nothing about cars, but my Dad was also impressed with their solution to my specific problem. Apparently my heater core had rusted through? Whatever it was, I no longer had heat in my car (Brr!) but Mike and Mark where able to jimmy-​rig another solution that didn’t involve replacing the über expensive part. I planned to buy a new car within a year and, let’s be honest, that part was worth more than my old clunker as a whole.
Moral of the story: I highly recommend 10^th Street Auto if your clunker also takes a dump on you.

10^th Street Auto is great. They explain things very clearly and aren’t just searching for additional things to fix. They’ve fixed petty things like door handles and window rollers, and if you decide to do something yourself after they diagnose it (like replace the battery or light bulbs) they won’t pressure you about it. They were even able to reproduce and fix my strange intermittent electrical problem that no one else was able to work out (a HUGE victory!). They also are super nice and seem to understand my strange attachment to my old, unnecessary-​in-​the-​city car…

Like the other female poster on here, I’m always a little wary when taking my car in. But, the guys at 10^th Street Auto make it such a pleasant experience. In fact, one time I told them I heard a noise and they couldn’t hear it and they called to see what I was doing to get to that noise so they could figure it out. They drove the car around and called me back to let me know they couldn’t hear any noise and there didn’t seem to be a problem. I doubt I would have this experience at Jiffy Lube or anywhere else for that matter.
They are super courteous and their prices are very reasonable. Me and my car love these guys!
If you’re on the Hill and have a car, this is the place you want to go!
