It was the first mosque established in Washington, D.C., opening seven years prior to the Islamic Center of Washington. The American Fazl Mosque was Built as a private residence in 1912, the Colonial Revival-style building is designated as a contributing property to the Sheridan-Kalorama Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Mosque served as headquarters of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community from 1950 until 1994(now based in Silver Spring, Maryland).
