Atlas Brew Works

Bottom line on top: I had a great group experience at the brewery due to the kindness and accommodating spirit of its staff. Also, the beer that Atlas brews is fantastic!
I recently celebrated a birthday on a Friday at Atlas Brew Works. The staff allowed my wife to set up snacks, cupcakes, and decorations on one of the available picnic tables. Additionally, we ordered pizza. The bartenders happily served the 20+ people in our group and were super enthusiastic to talk about the beer, which was interesting and fun. Other employees were available and willing to walk around and show us the brewery without any sort of pre-​booked tour or solicitation. Props to Corey and the staff in general for helping to make a wonderful birthday possible.

Atlas Brew Works is becoming a DC establishment. It’s in the up and coming Ivy City neighborhood within walking distance to several other DC establishments like One Eight Distillery (vodka and whisky) and New Columbia Distillery (gin).
Atlas Brew Works is pretty large and on the weekends offer a BBQ food truck and lawn games. Order a flight of beer for $ 9 to sample all their beer and grab a picnic table outside.

My new favorite brewer to just hang out at on the weekend. The beer is really good, the lights are reasonably priced, and the crowd is cool and diverse. They have corn hole and a food truck and give tours at certain times in the afternoon.

Great! One male staff especially. He can tell which is which right away. He loves beer and taught me some about beer.

Casual. Dogs, friends, corn hall, pizza food truck, etc… you can imagine eh!?!

No free tastings or samples but the flights were reasonably priced 5 for $ 8.
Staff was friendly, ambiance was great, lots of room and seating compare to DC Brau.
Gave it 3 stars because I didn’t think the beer was that great here. Thought the ales were too sweet for my taste. Left me feeling thirsty for water.

4 stars for the price, location, staff and beer.
It’s very laid back, small brewery, a nice place to hang out but –1 star because they can have a better table and chairs. It was just scattered and I think they can be a little organized.
I’d come back but not probably till I try other brewery.

For most DC residents, Atlas might be a little out of the way as it’s over in Northeast not far from Bardo and the arboretum. The way the space is set up reminds me of 3 Stars in that it’s mostly a giant warehouse with a small bar where folks can fill up growlers and order drinks. This isn’t a very pubby space, and tables and chairs are of the plastic foldable variety, but there is cornhole! There are a few tables inside and a few outside/​in the loading dock as well that can accommodate 2 or 3 groups comfortably.
I’m disappointed to say that I really didn’t enjoy the selection that Atlas had available when I visited a couple weekends ago. The cap south lager felt bodiless and the steam beer was uninteresting. Even the anniversary ale, which I think I’ve had at Glen’s Garden Market, left little impression despite the fact that I’m quite certain I really enjoyed it last time. It’s unlikely I’ll be back, but it’s worth stopping by if you’re in the area.

DC is trying so very hard to join the craft beer craze, and Atlas is a pretty solid effort all around. I recommend the Rowdy Rye.
The atmosphere is typical of DC breweries on weekends — packed to capacity with 20−30-somethings and loud. If you’re lucky there will be corn hole and a food truck on the premises.

You just have to love a brewery with great beer and great personalities and Atlas Brew Works has both! Their beers and their employees are full of character, and you will be hard pressed to not find something to your liking. The District Common, the NSFW, and the Wet Hop American Summer were my favorites from the beers we sampled. They have cornhole and long picnic tables set up, so there is plenty of space to hang out and enjoy a brew. They also have a designated spot for food trucks, so you probably won’t leave hungry either.

Fun place to visit in DC (though a little out of the way from pretty much anything). Typical small brewery in the area, order the flight and then pick the ones you want for your future pours. Picnic table seating and cornhole available.
I do like that you sit right next to all of the brewing equipment, kinda cool.

Enjoyed my visit to Atlas Brew Works! A friend and I decided to go on an impromptu trip here while we were at Union Market. It was less than a mile walk, recommend going with a group.
They provide a flight of generous tastings for $ 8 ($ 10 including tax and tip). The flights include everything from their popular Rowdy to their Seasonal Ponzi. They have some tables laid out for people to hang out, but it’s kind of an awkward set up. I’d like to see them creating more of a beer garden type environment, with welcoming seating. Right now, it’s basically picnic tables right next to their giant distiller.
Staff at the bar and giving tours were really great! They were giving out free tickets to a beer fest, which was pretty awesome as well.
Looking forward to returning!

Nice beer selection in the brewery itself. A few backyard type games, and some seating/​table space to stand/​sit and chill with your friends.
A little hard to get to (thank god for UBER), but worth the trip if you’re in a group.

Despite being a relatively young brewery, Atlas is making some pretty excellent beer. I have to say that their Rowdy Rye is one of my go-​to beers in the city, and I love how you can find it on tap in so many bars!
I recently visited the brewery on a Saturday afternoon. There were a ton of people out there, a food truck, and some lawn (er parking lot) games going on. I was really impressed with the number of people there and the laid back vibe. I wanted to fill a couple growlers, and the bar staff was friendly, funny, and very helpful.
This is a very cool spot, and I definitely recommend going to check it out some time!

Ivy City has finally starting to get noticed, thanks in no small part to New Columbia Distillers (makers of Green Hat Gin), and Atlas Brew Works.
Atlas started out small, but like DC Brau, has grown leaps and bounds in their almost two years in business. It is now also available in cans in addition to growlers, bombers, and pints in the tasting room. The actual brewery is in an old warehouse on West Virginia Avenue (the east side of Ivy City) facing Mt. Olivet Cemetery; pay no attention to the working women that occasionally frequent the area.
But I digress, back to the topic at hand: beer. Admittedly, CEO Justin Cox is longtime acquaintance, that does not, however, cloud my judgement when it comes to their product. The California Common is a very drinkable alternative to some of your mass-​produced macros, and the Rowdy Rye is great if you want something with a little more umph. For those who like something a little darker, the NSFW Black IPA can’t be beat, but my favorite is the La Saison Des Fetes, a dark saison with a healthy 7.1%ABV.
I’m glad to see this local brewery succeeding, and based on their rapid expansion, it’s probably available on tap near you. So, what are you waiting for? Try some now!

Great brewery to visit! I went on a tour here and they really know their stuff (if that’s not obvious) and will answer any question you have even if it’s unrelated to the beer. People in my tour did ask some really random questions…
Their beer is great and they had a sampler special. I think it was $ 8 for 4, 5 oz. samples and then one half pint of your choosing Great beer. Great place. But, take a cab/​ride over there. It’s not the best area to be walking around in.

As a relatively young brewery, and given that the law only recently allowed pouring pints on brewery premises in DC, Atlas can be forgiven for not having a particularly inviting space for their bar. There are no tables or chairs, and the bar is wedged into a corner with no separation from the actual industrial brewery space. A homemade cornhole set makes for the lone entertainment option. They did mention an impending expansion to annex the adjacent space and open up their floor plan soon, which should be an improvement.
Really, though, this isn’t a bar, it’s a brewery, so there are only two ingredients that govern your experience: the beer and the staff. Atlas scores high marks in both areas. The staff behind the bar and giving the tour were all super friendly and willing to engage in conversation geeking out about beer arcana. They only have three or four varieties on draft but Atlas doesn’t brew any weak offerings, and they offer tasting flights as well as full pours, growler fills, and 750ml bottles for sale to go.
The DC craft beer scene is exploding, and Atlas should not be missed if you want to experience all the scene has to offer. Someday you’ll be able to reminisce about how you saw the place at its humble beginnings.

I love beer. I’ve been to 100+ Colorado breweries so when I’m in another city I always try to see the local craft beer scene. Was in DC for work recently and happened to come across Atlas. Their beers are top notch and the staff was ridiculously friendly. It’s a little out of the way of you’re staying downtown, but definitely worth the über ride over.

We came here for «happy hour» on Friday. I have to say the staff did an amazing job since it was the first day they were able to sell pints at the brewery. There was some cornhole set up in the garage area and the bar is right smack in the middle of their brewing facility. I have to say the growler fills are a little expensive for me, ranging from $ 10 – 18, however their flight special is a STEAL. 4 flights and 1 ½ pour of your favorite for $ 7. It gives you a great opportunity to try their brews. I am a fan of more hoppy beers. Atlas brews have more of a balance. so those that loathe IPAs– this is the place to go. I also had an IPL (Indian pale lager) for the first time, very interesting!

For those that complain about the «Happy Hr» price, you have to remember, this place is not a bar, it’s a brewery. They’re providing us the opportunity to drink a full beer at the brewery instead of binge-​drinking the growlers at home. It’s not meant to compete with other bars, it’s meant for us to not chug our growlers when we go home!

As huge supporters of local breweries and distilleries, we of course checked this place out. Now, I’m going to be honest. Out of the three times we have been here, we have not been blown away by anything, sadly. They do not have many beers on tap, yes they are new, but over the past several several months there has only been one maybe two new beers. (And I think only one). I hope they get more creative and make some more brews. You can find their stuff at some local bars, such as Boundary Road so you do not have to actually visit there.
I will say they have some cool events. They had a post-​Halloween party and just recently had a band/​mini ensemble performing.
I think the biggest positive of this place is that it is right around the corner from New Columbia Distillers. And we love that place!
If you really want to go to some breweries, go to 3 Stars and DC Brau first and then give this place a try. Or just wait until they make more things.
Not trying to hate on them, we will still continue to go and support them, they just are not our favorite.

We were visiting Washington, DC as our annual winter mini-​vacation. We ventured into the hotel bar across the street from where we were staying and the bartender there recommended that we visit the Atlas Brew Works. We are always interested in checking out local breweries whenever we are on vacation.
The website for the brewery noted that there were tours/​tastings on Saturdays. We arrived a few minutes early and hung out outside until they opened up shop to the public at 1:00. I believe the website notes that the tours/​tastings are from 1:00 to 4:00 on Saturdays.
There are no fancy frills or bells about this brewery, just a nice big space with equipment and a decent sized bar-​type area where they were pouring pints and flights of the three beers they had on tap.
As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by one of the guys working at the brewery. We were able to purchase tickets towards pints and/​or flights of three. Each ticket was $ 5. We grabbed five tickets and approached the tasting area and were helped immediately. People started to sprinkle in as we hung out and there was a decent crowd.
There were four or five people behind the bar and I was really impressed with how enthusiastic and passionate they all seemed about beer and what they were creating at the brewery. Katie, the young lady who was taking care of us was awesome and was very knowledgeable about the brewery, the beers and also the Washington, DC area (this was a plus for us as we weren’t too familiar with what to check out in DC). We tried the three beers they had available– the District Common, the Rowdy and the Saison Des Fetes. Katie recommended that we try them in the order I just listed, and it was perfect. I enjoyed all three and my boyfriend’s favorite was the Rowdy. The District Common is very easy to drink and as Katie said, a beer you can drink all day on football Sunday. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be the Saison Des Fetes– it was not as bitter as the Rowdy and is a great winter beer.
We were so impressed with the beers, staff and also the tour (it was more impromptu than a tour at Sam Adams brewery in Boston, but very informative none-​the-​less). The beers are distributed only in DC as of now, but if they are ever carried in NJ, we will be loyal customers of the beers.
If you live in the DC area or are just visiting, I highly recommend you check the Atlas Brew Works out because it’s awesome.
