Bazaar Spices

Not a very good spice store. They’re trying to do too much in a very small space: you wouldn’t be able to carry the basics of real spice store in this stall.
Instead, they don’t try. There’re a few versions of basic spices but few specialty or high quality choices. A lot of the space is taken up by what might be termed ‘foods/​mixes associated with spice shops’. This wouldn’t be a bad thing if there were more actual spices here. There aren’t.
Take your spice business to Penzeys.

Tucked within a tiny corner of Union Market, it’s easy to miss Bazaar Spices. But to those in the know, Bazaar Spices is a utilitarian spice shop with an extensive coverage of spices throughout the world. I appreciate the enormous selection of Asian and African spices as well as the prepared selections. Recently, I purchased a French-​Indian vadouvan spice mix, an extraordinary blend of shallots, coriander, cumin, turmeric and fenugreek that added panache to an otherwise timid chicken preparation. Other purchases involve chamomile, the Whiskey Rub described by Amanda M., and mouth-​numbing peppercorns from the Sichuan province of China. Make no mistake; Bazaar Spices is DC’s only answer to Penzey’s in the suburbs. Essentially, if you are looking for spices and Bazaar Spices doesn’t carry it, you are probably going to have to travel far and wide into the outstretched arms of Maryland and Virginia to complete your spice needs.

Tiny little spice stand in Union Market. Some of the best prices for loose spices I’ve found. And they carry some hard to find spices in quantities that are small enough that the spice will remain fresh in the time it takes one to use all of it. They also sell spice-​sized glass jars with labels that you can fill out yourself, which was perfect for the Whiskey Rub (described as: «a course, flavorful pepper blend made with real Jack Daniels Whiskey, and a hint of rosemary and garlic…») that I bought to give as a gift. If you are looking for a speciality spice, Baazar Spices should be your first stop.

Great spices store, I found this in the Union Market. A small space packed with lots of spices. I had difficulties of finding curry spices in DC, unless I go to the suburb. You can find a lots of stuff here. I found also Bamboo Rice, interesting, fragrant, soft… A place no doubt I will come back to.

We stopped by Bazaar Spices today after dining at Rappahannock Oyster Company in Union Market. I was amazed and pleased to see all the wonderful, exotic spices and spice blends that they had. You will find rarities in Bazaar Spices that I’ve never seen on this continent before — they have special blends from South Africa, west Africa, and south and southeast Asia, along with great ayurvedic herbs. Owners Ivan and Monica are really friendly and very knowledgeable — when I told Ivan I had chronic lower back stiffness, he knew just what to suggest, and something tells me he’ll turn out to be right. It’s not a big shop, but they’ve got loads of great spices at reasonable prices. Stop by and give your nose a tour — it’ll thank you for the excitement!

They have a wide selection of spices and botanicals. This is a great place to take your time exploring new flavors and plants remedies because of the relaxed atmosphere, helpful staff and sample recipes and other uses posted on the tables. It also works when you’re on the run because you avoid either the crowded aisles, long lines or apathetic staff found at most of the area’s grocery stores.
It’s a good compliment to the meals and the other artisan attractions offered at the newly opened Union Market, for when you’re hanging out with friends. It’s also conveniently nearby the older wholesale warehouse area where you can buy food and other items, usually in bulk, at wholesale prices.
The store opened recently and the owners seem very receptive to shoppers’ input. It will be interesting to see what new products and information will become available over time.
