One of the most unique and amazing thai places I’ve ever experienced. The old Thai faves are great, but so few offer such a fresh take. They told us it’s because they focus on street food here. But it is street food given a fine-dining touch and done exceptionally well. The lone non-noodle bowl entrée on the menu was under a section simply called the kitchen special, and it was indeed special. It was very simple, just a thick piece of chicken, leg and thigh, with a side of rice and two sauces. For something so simple, they nailed it perfectly. I believe the red sauce on the side is just mae ploy, which is a delicious sauce that pairs perfectly with the chicken. We also tried a noodle bowl, their specialty and the majority of entrée options on the menu. The hot and spicy bowl is top notch. After the relative simplicity of the chicken, it was a joy that this bowl had such complex flavors. Every bite and sip offered something new, and the spice is present without ever being overpowering. I could have kept going back for more all night. For our first visit we had to indulge a little and tried two appetizers as well. The brussels sprouts are incredible. Maybe the best brussels I’ve ever had. They are satueed perfectly in I believe a fish sauce. Whatever it is, it is a perfect pairing for the veggie, and they get great char on them. The buns are spectacular too. You get three, and I love that you can mix and match the fillings. We tried chicken panang and sweet black bean. Both were good, but the panang was the star, really bursting with peanutty curry flavor. Not too doughy either. On my second visit I tried the ground pork and mixed vegetable buns, and the pork jerky. More wins. They really do nothing wrong. As if the food wasn’t enough of a draw, BKK also sets itself apart with a solid cocktail and beer list. When we went they were offering a draft cocktail featuring campari and sweet vermouth. You could order with gin to make it a negroni or bourbon for a boulevardier. We had one of each, and they were tasty. Plenty of asian beer choices, too.

My girlfriend and I had the vegetable bowl, the pork boat bowl, steamed buns and the Brussels sprouts. I’m generally easy to please when it comes to food, but I was seriously disappointed in BKK. Granted I got my order for pick up, but I got there right when they said it would be ready. Everything was cold and bland. And by «bland» I don’t just mean that it wasn’t spicy, I mean that it had hardly any taste to it whatsoever. The steamed buns were dry and crumbly, the pork and vegetable broths had almost no seasoning, and the vegetable broth was thin and watery. Maybe the food is better when you dine in, but I wouldn’t take my chances.

I love this place. Solid selection of Thai noodles(mostly soups!), it hits the spot on any cool fall or winter day. Perfect if you have a cold. The vegetarian options are limited(two soups), but I have ordered the coconut noodles on both visits and it might be hard to even try the second option because the coconut noodle bowl is such a perfect flavor explosion of coconut, peanuts, and all the right Thai flavors. Highly recommend for a mellow dinner.

Outstanding excursion for my tastebuds. I am very glad to have this spot in the neighborhood and will be back regularly. The Brussels sprouts, brother in law eggs, and noodle dishes were quite delicious.

Deeeeeelicious. I’m so glad that this is still a Thai place after Beau Thai moved. It’s such a cozy, intimate place to have a warm and tasty meal. If you come, get the buns to start! We tried them all and my favorite was definitely the spicy pork(interestingly, the spicy pork did not strike me as nearly as spicy as the chicken curry). I had the coconut noodle bowl and it was sooooo good. Such a wonderful balance of flavor in every single bite. My husband tried it and thought it was some of the best broth he’s ever had. He opted for the spicy Shanghai noodles and was a fan — even though the spice level was pretty much at his max. Great spot for a date, and lots of authentic options for Thai food beyond Pad Thai-type fare.

Great vegetarian dishes are here. We usually get the Brussel sprouts, vegetable steamed bun and the coconut noodle bowl. The sweet bean bun is awesome as a warm dessert. Boom!

So happy that BKK is delivering now! My fiancé and I had a long drive back to DC after the Thanksgiving holiday and didn’t feel like going out for dinner. We called BKK and ordered the fried tofu appetizer, the Bangkok Spicy Noodles and the Hot & Spicy Noodle Bowl. The food arrived in less time than was quoted, the driver was very pleasant, and the food was tasty. I’m not normally a fan of tofu, but there is something about the way this tofu is prepared that is absolutely addictive(the sauce is key)! The Bangkok noodles had just the right amount of heat from the spice and the bean sprouts give the dish a great texture. My fiancé loves the hot & spicy noodle bowl and it didn’t disappoint tonight although it’s too spicy for my taste buds. BKK may become my go-to for delivery from now on :)

BKK Cookshop is connected to Beau Thai in Mt Pleasant so you know the food will be good. My wife and two friends went here and the moment we walked in we’d know we’d love it. The atmosphere is simple and inviting. We ordered the buns for appetizers, which was great. I ordered the coconut chicken noodles and it had amazing flavor(warning: the chicken is on the bone). The spicy Thai noodles were good too! The only sub par items were the cucumbers(They were too sweet) and the Thai iced tea was just average.

Love this place! Owned by the same people as Beau Thai so obviously the food is awesome. Service was great, happy hour specials are awesome. Very reasonable. Will definitely go back!

Our new neighborhood fav! The flavors were delicious. Wonderful, friendly service. The Tom yum bowl was amazing. Only complaint is we had the«dish from the kitchen» chicken something. it was dry and overcooked, but everything else the appetizers — fried tofu & Brussels sprouts and 2 noodle bowls were amazing. We will be back soon

OK, I’m pretty shocked at some of the poor reviews on here. So you’re vegetarian: get a life! Not every ethnic restaurant has to remake its spice palate to trace the contours of your special snowflake(I used to be veg, so I speak from experience). So you thought the Kao Mok was a bit stingy on the portion size: DON’T GETIT! Honestly the waiters would never recommend that dish as the thing you ought to try on the menu. Get the Boat Noodle or the Tom Yum. Now for my thoughts: As someone who is very particular about atmosphere, presentation and(in particular) Asian food, I would say that BKK is one of the best recent additions to the DC scene. Menu is small but generally very well executed(I wish we would see more of that in this city). There are a couple of underwhelming elements(e.g. the steamed buns and, yes, the kao mok), but those are more than compensated for by the other dishes, interesting sake and shochu selection, Japanese beer, lovely atmosphere and overall execution. To get the most out of BKK you need to eat the food how they intend you to eat it. For example, the sauces are there for a reason. They allow you to calibrate the spice and fishy flavors to your personal liking. Without them, the dishes don’t pop in the same way. BKK isn’t perfect and I wish I could give it 4.5 stars. But forced to choose between 4 and 5 I’ll give it 5 any day. I have little patience for someone who walks into an excellent, innovative new dig, doesn’t properly explore the menu, doesn’t use the sauces and then zeros it out on Unilocal(or gives 2 stars) — or slams it for not being a vegetarian mecca. If you don’t like phở because you’re too much of an idiot to add the garnish and use the hoisin/siracha sauces, then it’s not the restauranteur’s fault. If you’re a veg, that’s not the restauranteur’s fault. If you only order and appetizer and one main between you and your partner, pick the least representative dish on the menu, and then are mad because it wasn’t the size of a half slab of babyback ribs, that’s not the restauranteur’s fault. I’ll grant that it could have more veg options, and the kao mok is too small. But in general BKK is a gem. Don’t miss it.

Finally some good street Thai food! Noodle soups are my favorite. I’m a fan of Beau Thai, and when I heard they would be opening more of a street food Thai concept with Thai noodle soups, I had to try it out. The first thing I had was the Boat Noodle soup. I can’t say that this was that authentic, but they didn’t put the«Floating Market Boat Noodle Soup» that this noodle soup is based after. Probably because they felt the crowd in DC are not adventurous enough to try the type you get in Thailand. If you tried the Floating Market variety, they put in coagulated blood, pig innards, and stuff that would make most people around here disgusted. It would fly with people used to authentic Asian food, but not so much in Shaw. As «trendy» as Shaw is, I don’t think the people there are as adventurous enough to try a real bowl of Floating Market Boat Noodle Soup. That being said, the noodle soup was still excellent. It had a really good deep flavor, and I added chili oil to make it really spicy. I’m excited to try their fried noodle varieties and the other noodle soups. The price is pretty fair for DC. It’s not suburb cheap, but at the same time there isn’t really street(this level of streetness, even more street than Baan Thai) Thai elsewhere in DC.

Visiting DC and found this place when I did a search for Thai food. It doesn’t have the traditional food you expect when you think of going to a Thai restaurant. They have more noodle dishes and dishes whose description reminded me of Vietnamese Phở — noodles with meat and veggies in a broth. I shared the chicken wings, and 2 of the dryer noodle dishes. Both were delicious and I would recommend eating here. The wings were so good, we ordered another serving. They have an outside eating area and the venue is very cute. Lovely and attentive wait staff.

Very delicious meal at BKK Cookshop. Friends and I shared a bunch of apps and each got a different noodle dish(they we let each other try). It was all very tasty and very very spicy. Highlights –Steam buns — you can get chicken curry, black bean, veggie, and pork. you can order a variety in one plate or all of one kind. we ordered a variety and the chicken and black bean were both my favorites. i also appreciated the bun to filling ratio. these were solid. –Chicken wings — almost didn’t order these, but sooo glad we did. they are so incredibly spicy but also so so flavorful — you can’t stop eating them even though your mouth is burning! –Pork shoulder — tender and in a wonderful broth that is perfect to soak up a steam bun in. yummmm –Brussels sprouts — delicious salty and fried, but nothing to write home about I got suki noodle stir fry with chicken and had no regrets on my choice. It was really delicious, the glass noodles were delectable A friend got the coconut noodle bowl with chicken. It was a bit weird because the chicken came in the form of a full drumstick. Other friends got the tom yum noodle bowl and the boat noodle bowel. Everyone really enjoyed their choices. They don’t have dessert yet! Sad, I really wanted some mango sticky rice. They’ve been open of while now, so hopefully they get it together and add dessert soon… Next time I come back, I hope they do.

How funny it was to come to the same place as the old Beau Thai! I had high expectations as I’m a big Beau Thai fan and BKK did not disappoint. I love this little corner of Shaw-it’s residential and quiet and when you eat there you feel like you are in someone’s backyard. We started with chicken panang steamed buns and then I had the Bangkok spicy noodles. It’s the perfect place for a quiet outdoor evening.

If you are interested in delicious food, sharing and keeping things spicy then check out BKK Cookshop. After walking past the establishment many times and saying, gosh when are we going to go there? My boyfriend and I made our way over to BKK last night and it did not disappoint! BKK is solid Thai food, mixed in with small and large plates that are meant to be shared. The menu is rather small, so we ordered something from each section: Steamed Spicy Ground Pork Buns, Hot and Spicy Soup(?), and Garlic Rice. Our waiter warned us that the spicy sauce was indeed spicy, but we both love to amp things up so we didn’t really take his word for it. If you are looking for spice– toss this red paste/sauce onto your dish. If you are a spicy aficionado you will be sweating in no time. Keep in mind, we loved it; the sauce was delicious and really brought the dishes to the next level. I will be back to utilize their patio and sip on some happy hour beverages!

As a very close neighbor, and big fan of Beau Thai, i was elated that BKK was opening. I watched with anticipation as they redecorated the place, and finally was able to try it out last Sunday. It was a beautiful June night, and we sat on the patio, which was lovely. However, the service and food failed to meet expectations. Our waiter had some communication and timing issues(our food came out super quickly), and we were underwhelmed by the quality and the portion sizes. First of all, they were out of half the beers we wanted to try. Oh well. We weren’t terribly hungry, so we ordered to small plates and one ‘large’ plate to share. To call the Kao mok a large plate(at $ 15!!!) is laughable. It is literally a tiny drumstick and a cup of rice. Though the flavors were tasty, it was just too small to pass itself off as an entrée or large plate. The buns were ok, overpriced at $ 8. We had a cold noodle salad that was the highlight of the meal. I feel like BKK is trying to be a Thip Kao, with a creative(albeit TINY) menu, but the prices just don’t match up. This is a neighborhood joint, and they should reevaluate their business model.

BKK Cookshop has only been open for a few days, so I would like to come back again at a later date to get a fuller picture of the menu, but so far, pretty good! I don’t live nearby, but I was in the neighborhood having drinks and by the time 8pm rolled around, I was in dire need of sustenance. I come from a family with heads bigger than our stomachs, so I ordered a Thai iced coffee, chicken wings, and the pork boat noodles. + Iced coffee: standard Thai iced coffee, delicious and refreshing. + Chicken wings: Let me preface by saying I was never a wings girl until I tried Korean fried chicken. They made me change my tune. So these wings are obviously not the Korean kind and therefore not extra crunchy, but they were a good size(2 wings and 2 drumsticks) and the sauce was really good. I would likely try again. +Pork boat noodles: The pork was perfectly tender but I wish there was more of it. The broth was tasty and pretty well balanced but just a smidge too salty. There also weren’t really that many noodles, but to be fair I was pretty full at that point and couldn’t finish half the broth. I am a bit of a bean sprout fiend, so was happy to see that they were plentiful. The space itself is nice, but it was quite hot inside, which made it especially difficult to eat a hot bowl of soup. I was definitely sweating. The patio was large and looked like a perfect spot to grab drinks and appetizers with friends. I also appreciated the plentiful bar seating by the window, as it allowed me to stuff my face solo and not feel awkward about it. All in all BKK Cookshop has some small issues to work out, but I definitely will be returning!

I ordered the steamed buns and the boat noodles. Tried one of each of the buns. I liked all of them, but my favorite was the spicy pork. I’m not sure how to describe it other than that it tasted like Thailand. The panang chicken bun was a little cold in the center, but it was their first night so I’m sure they’ll get that fixed. They were also a little small for the cost. I’ve been longing for a place to get boat noodles in walking distance from my house since I moved here last year. They were great. I missed the pork balls and blood tofu that I’m used to a little bit, but the meat that was in there was so good I didn’t really care. The sauces were fantastic(I like to add some of the sour/spicy sauce and some of the really spicy sauce). Definitely will be back to try some of the other options. AND they are going to start delivery in a few weeks!!! Boat noodles whenever I want.
