Found this place by accident. I was in town, walking towards the China town when I passed the familiar elephant, I remember having a beer with elephant picture in Brussels so I decided to stop in for lunch. Surprise, that elephant beer was available on draft. It tasted what I remembered from Brussels. For lunch, I had croque-madame, I also had this dish in Belgium. Feeling nostalgic, I enjoyed my lunch with nice strong beer. Good service, good food, they seem to have good happy hour too. I wouldn’t mind coming back here for more food and drinks next time I am in town again.

Landed up here randomly with a friend on a Saturday night and surprisingly there was no wait or crowds so we got seated at the bar for drinks that eventually turned into dinner. The staff is great, friendly courteous, and relatively knowledgeable of their wine list. The oyster bar was fantastic, probably some of the freshest oysters I’ve had in the area and a great variety. Finding bone marrow on the menu was a pleasant surprise, but it was a little disappointing. There was just way too much going on that buried the natural flavors of the marrow which is what I usually love about it in the first place. Steak comes with a side of fries and salad which on the whole was just mediocre. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t all that great either on the whole.

Another referral from our hosts for the weekend. Another amazing spot. Prices for some entrees can be steep, the muscles are fairly priced and come in half and full orders, usually 17/35, respectfully. Its really a gold mine for mussels. We got a variety among our party; the Mediterranean, Mushroom, and classic white whine. All around delicious and well balanced flavors. The mussels are served in cast iron skillets, which is a cool touch. We also got a dozen of West coast oysters. Everything you can ask for, fresh and decedent. Our server Ivan was very friendly and gave good food suggestions. We hung out unrushed which is always a nice feeling. Very comfortable inside.

Extensive beer list and excellent mussels. Tasty cheese plates. Good service. Nicely decorated. What don’t I like? The noise level. On a busy night, it’s just absurdly too loud. The restaurant appears intentionally designed to be deafening. It’s all hard surfaces in a big cavernous space. So I go when I can sit outside on a nice night or when I know they won’t be busy, but otherwise, I steer clear. It’s not good enough to make up for the awful din. Seated inside on that kind of night, it’s a 1 – 2 star experience. When it’s not ruined by the cacophony, 3 – 4 stars.

Very good restaurant. Our friends have a recommendation to try this place and we were glad they did. After seeing all the pictures on Unilocal,we decided to get the veal bolognese mussels(half order) and French onion soup to start. Mussels were one of the best I’ve had, this includes many places in Belgium and all over Europe. Never heard of a veal bolognese sauce before but it worked and it was delicious with bread. On the other hand, I’m not sure what all the raving was about for the onion soup. I felt it was tasty, but a little too salty and cheesy for my taste. For entrees, my husband ordered the pork shank and I ordered the steak frites. Our waiter admitted that he forgot to fire our entrée orders so there was a long period of time between finishing our appetizers and entrees. They gave my husband a free glass of wine for the inconvenience. When the food came, my husband loved his meal. The flavors on the veal shank was wonderful, I think it had an Asian flavor to it which included fish sauce as one of the ingredients. I thought the steak was plain old good and the frites a little disappointing as they were not as crispy as I thought it would be. Service was good with the exception of forgetting about our entrees — which made our dinner well over 3 hours because we were waiting for our food. This is definitely a good restaurant for a birthday or special occasion as it is on the pricy side.

This is a great place for special occasions. Spent my birthday weekend with a short trip to DC. Had been to DC many times for business but never had a chance to explore the city, except for the touristy things I did with my family as a kid. Fresh oysters and classic mussels were excellent. He tried the duck breast. The preparation was good, but the meat was a little tough. Roasted beet salad was a great starter. I hadn’t had it with honey, which offset the acid nicely Chocolate dessert tart was really special. usually, those dense chocolatey desserts are good for the first two bites, then leave me with a terrible sugar high. But this tart must have used much higher quality chocolate and cream because each bite was like having an expensive truffle. Whoever whipped the cream(if it was done by hand) has some incredible technique. Light as air and didn’t start to run before the dessert was finished.

Well after getting a little HANGRY was in the air so I was told this was a place to eat white my friend who I was with as she frequents this place. I wanted to sit outside but she insisted eating inside and glad we did, as the wonderful weather turned into a cloudy windy rainy event. Now this place was not packed so we were able to get a table fast and served very quickly. Our server forgot her name but will add it later took great care of us. From the drinks to the table bread, to appetizer, to the main meal was amazing. Drink Necromancer was a great balance had to have two, Oyster from coast to coast the old bay sauce, hit the spot, Main meal Fried Chicken Benedict great flavor nothing needed to make it even better was perfect, Grilled Marinated Bistro Steak«Steak and Eggs» let’s just say the sauce should be bottled, steak perfectly made great temperature texture and taste, poached eggs perfect yolk and warm just a perfect balance with the whole meal, To finish the meal I had a cappuccino with an apple design. Let the pictures tell my story, now I’ve heard the steak was great only at dinner but I will return for that…

awesome food and experience here! im usually not a huge fan of belgian/modern european cuisine but i gotta say, this place had me cleaning my plate(and reaching over to my husbands for a couple extra bites). a group of 4 of us came here on a friday night for a celebratory dinner date and it was surprisingly not as busy as i thought it would be. we started with an order of full-size mussels to share. the order of mussels came with bread and fries, and the bread is delicious dipped into the mussels and the fries were REALLY good — crispy but not overly greasy. i highly recommend that you order the fries whether via mussels or ordering them as a side. our entrees were all bomb. i had the skillet roasted amish chicken(i know i know… ordering chicken at a restaurant is a nono… but the chicken was just calling my name that night). the chicken dish here was probably the BEST chicken dish ive had EVER. the chicken was so flavorful and not dry at all… and the potato cake that it was served with had amazing flavor as well. kudos, brasserie beck, on your chicken. oh, and the 1 or 2 bites i had of my husband’s crispy skin duck breast was really good too. i guess you just cant go wrong with any of the dishes. we ended the night with the apple pie, which was a very generous size served a la mode. soooo gooooooooooooooooooood. i usually gripe about running out of restaurants to try in dc, but i feel like i found one that will definitely be included into my list of regulars in the future!

This place was actually really nice! Coming in to a late brunch we where literally the last people in and it was my friends birthday so we where running a little late. However the staff still out our order in and made sure our dining experience was nice. We did feel if we would have came earlier would have had a little better service as our waiter was now bartending and taking care of bar guests . However the food was amazing. I had the steak and poached eggs and it was great! Cooked to a perfect medium and the eggs where delightful also. I have have never had poached eggs with my steak and it was very interesting to see but very good ! The presentation of the food was also awesome ! The place gives me that old feel with a very modern trendy with much to offer. I will most definitely go back and try the dinner menu also. I enjoyed my food and so did the other people in my party !

Melt-in-your-mouth fabulousness… best way I can describe our meal. We went for an early dinner and started in the bar for drinks. The draft selection is great and the maui mule served in a bronze pineapple is a refreshing starter. Once seated we started with the cheese racklette app. The cheese was oozy and rich with a tangy sweet glaze. Served with pears, crusty bread and the best homemade granola I’d ever had. Then came the entrees. My peccorino pierogis were heavenly, reminding me of my grandmother’s German-Russian cooking. The runny egg yolk and sweet carmelized onion relish topped it perfectly. The mussels in the veal sauce with hard boiled eggs were a delightful surprise. It’s a generous portion as the half portion was enough for a meal plus extras. The mussels were tender and perfectly cooked. The baked chicken, although simply prepared, was perfect. Crunchy, flavorful skin with juicy interior. The mashed potato cake complemented it well. This was possibly my favorite meal during my week in DC and I’d be back in a heartbeat on my next visit.

This is a little hidden gem! I can’t believe that I worked so close for so long and never got in here for lunch! I had the onion soup, which had Gruyère and scallions and the broth is made with pork fat… It has the most dangerous thing ever!!! You can feel the silkiness on your tongue and the cheese has that nutty flavor and oh so gooey! It’s by far the best onion soup I’ve ever eaten, and I’ve tried hundreds! The duck fat fries were great, they came with three different mayos, regular, chipotle and balsamic. My favorite was the balsamic, it was sweet and zippy! The beers were all good, the bartender let us sample each, and they were all pretty strong, in great Belgium fashion. A couple are made especially for this restaurant, which I think is pretty awesome as well. I enjoyed all of the beers, Belgium makes some of my faves, my only problem is they are some of the priciest, not just here either. All in all, an enjoyable afternoon!

What’s to say about this place that hasn’t been said already? My experience here was wonderful and the food was top notch. The décor was top notch too! The tall ceilings gave a great touch! Try the French onion soup! It’s definitely one of the best FO soups I’ve had and, believe it or not, wasn’t too filling and served as the perfect app — even with all the yummy cheese! I also highly recommend the salmon burger, a dish you don’t often find in DC. Salmon usually comes in filet form, but this burger is one of the best you can find. Served with delicious crispy fries, the salmon burger both satisfies your craving for a sandwich and seafood, all in one bite. I’ll be back for more!

First off, let me start this by saying that the onion soup is hands down and by far the best damn onion soup I have ever tasted. Yes, it’s that good. When I heard the fries were fried in duck fat and served with three delicious sounding sauces I said hey, what can better than that. Let me tell, the onion soup! Ok, the beer. They have a very nice selection of Belgian beer. Doubles, Triples, Abby, Blonde… they have it. The beer is very expensive though. That being said, it’s all well worth it. The staff was very nice. From being greeted at the door to grabbing a beer and late lunch a the bar. I will definitely be back.

I tend to avoid restaurants in the downtown core. Rubbing elbows with the fatcats and power players doesn’t interest me, and I’m not excited about paying the downtown premium for a very ordinary meal. Brasserie Beck is a marked exception to my rule, because even though I’ll probably still have to put up with a power crowd and pay a little more, the meal will never be ordinary. I’ve been for a regular dinner, a DC beer week dinner put on by Boulevard Brewing, and now a night of DC restaurant week, and the experience has never been anything but superlative. The ambiance is very much that of a continental brasserie, tiled floors and dark wooden fixtures and not too bright lighting, a very clean no-nonsense look. The staff are the usual briskly efficient and polite variety, constantly bustling and filling water and clearing plates the minute you’re done, like the décor, no nonsense and no fuss. The selection of Belgian beers has all the usual suspects, Trappist and abbey styles as well as some American riffs on Belgian styles like Ommegang plus a few other off-the-beaten-path numbers. The food is fabulous, fancy without being frou frou, hearty but not heavy. I’m no fan of mussels but I never have trouble finding something on the menu that makes me happy, and even the warm bread basket to start is delightful. My most recent visit for restaurant week was a splendid three-course menu, a raclette appetizer that played with flavor and texture by pairing the funky gooey cheese with tartly crisp Granny Smith apple slices and a crunchy pile of granola, a hearty beef stew, and a chocolate crème brûlée to finish. Sure, the prices are nothing to sneeze at and the location means you’ll be surrounded by suits and high heels that cost more than your last month’s paycheck, but if you tune all that out and just focus on the delicious food and great Belgian beer, you’ll be in for a treat.

One of my favorite spots for mussels and I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed it yet!!! I’ve been here several times and it’s been great. The mussels are on point so if that’s your thing I’d highly recommend. I’ve always enjoyed the wine as well. The past time I also ordered steak which was perfect — medium rare and just pink enough but not crazy pink. The décor is very trendy and chic. HIghly recommend.

I’ll explain the positive three stars easily 1) our waiter was perfectly friendly and attentive 2) the beer list was excellent and the beer director was helpful 3) the crème brûlée. Perfection. But, I was quite disappointed with my meal. Both my starter, brussel sprout salad, and my main course, mountain trout, were swimming in oil. All I could taste in the fish was grease. Next time, I’ll stick to having a drink at the bar.

Where to start with the beauty décor of this establishment! First off I am a fan of chicy dining places, and my boo wanted to do something«fancy» for my birthday. He picked a winner! Reservations were made prior to our arrival, so the wait time was less than 5mins. Skip forward our waiter was awesome. Forgot his name but super personable. Ordered the Seasonal Oysters on ½ Shell Mignonette, Cocktail Sauce and Lemon«yum yum»! For main meals I ordered the Pan Roasted Atlantic Salmon Pearled Barley, Roasted Fall Onions, Cider Sage Butter, Horseradish and he ordered the honey glazed fried chicken. OMG!!! I am from Texas but this fried chicken was like heaven on a plate! Don’t get me wrong I loved my meal but WOW that chicken! We both enjoyed our meals. And lastly we split this dessert, sorry forgot the name lol. Would love to come back! Thanks from your neighbors at City Center!

If you’re craving for some mussels then this place is your go to! This place adds a Belgian European twist to the food they make here. We ordered the following: 1. 1 large plate of Wild Mushroom Mussels(These are the highlight of all of the dishes) 2. 1 large plate of Thai Curry Mussels(I probably won’t be ordering these again, not to say it was bad. The curry taste is subtle so it’s not overpowering. I just would rather try out some of the other flavors) 3. Grilled Octopus: These babies are tender and the texture of the meat tastes like they slow cooked it for a while. 4. Seafood platter: This was a daily special they had during the time we went to visit. It was a mixture of clams, shrimp, mussels, celery, with sauce glazed over. Also topped with crispy bread(awesome to dip with) 5. Frites(These babies are great compliments to the leftover sauce from the mussel plates) The ambiance was casual, and could be a bit loud but not to say you’d have to yell to have a conversation. It’s a great date spot as the tables are proportionally separated. We had 3 people in our group and we left with a full stomach. We probably could’ve gone away with only 1 of the mussel plates.

I went with a small group of friends for NYE. I appreciated that they had a special menu that was still à la carte. The options were plentiful as were the wine and beer lists. We were seated immediately and promptly greeted by our server. He was engaging, so friendly, polite, and attentive. I can’t say enough nice things about him. He also helped us navigate the menu. The food(mussels, trout, and duck) were all excellent. The fries were wonderful as others have mentioned and the wine did not disappoint. We were also highly pleased with our dessert selection. I definitely look forward to returning.

The food probably deserves two/three stars, but the service was good and they served my dad an off-menu special, so I’ve decided to round up a bit. My husband and I went to Marcel’s only a few weeks ago, and were decidedly underwhelmed, so when my sister mentioned that she wanted to go to Brasserie Beck to get wienerschnitzel for my dad, I was afraid that we could expect a similar experience. There is nothing wrong with the food at Brasserie Beck; it’s perfectly adequate. From a drinks perspective, they have a good selection of beers and the servers are very happy to give you their recommendations. They seem to favor Belgian beers which makes sense given their Belgian theme. For appetizers, I ordered the mushroom and barley soup while my dad got the fois gras. The mushroom soup was beautifully presented and the broth was quite tasty. It seemed a bit high price for $ 10, but it was an enjoyable dish. My dad really liked the fois gras, but he likes just about anything with fois gras, so I wasn’t surprised. For the main courses, we got wienerschnitzel, the chicken salad, a roasted squash salad with pepper tuna on the side, the cassoulet and then two side orders of the squash and the brussels sprouts. The wienerschnitzel, was well received and enjoyed, although my dad couldn’t eat all of it. Normally it’s only a special on Thursdays, so be aware of that if you want to try it. The cassoulet was passable. The best cassoulet I’ve had was still Central’s. The sausage was barely edible as was the pork belly. The duck confit and the beans were quite good however. The two salads were fine, the brussels sprouts made for a great midnight snack since we couldn’t eat all of them, and the squash were cold, which resulted in the kitchen sending us a new order with no questions asked. As mentioned, the service was pretty good. We went during the weekend after Christmas, but the place was pretty dead for a weekend evening. We were a bit surprised. The space is lovely and can accommodate larger parties. I don’t think we’ll be going back because the food isn’t what I and my husband prefer, but I appreciated the effort that the team made for my dad.

Lovely restaurant for a dinner event or a special event such as entertaining business clients or guest. Try to request the table adjacent from the kitchen, which offers great views of the chefs putting the final touches on the dishes. Service was good and prompt. The food presentation was done real well and all the dishes that were order were really good. I’d recommend the pork belly appetizer and pork shank for dinner(which has more of a southeast/Vietnamese taste than Belgium — nonetheless an excellent dish) and would definitely come back again.

Brasserie Beck is one of the restaurants I have been wanting to try out for a really long time. Just to be safe we made a reservation for 6 P.M. on a Saturday evening. That was definitely not required since the restaurant was pretty empty throughout our meal. According to my girlfriend they were swamped during the weekday lunch hours. We ended up getting half a portion of the classic white wine mussels, seared main scallops and the NY strip steak frites. The classic white wine mussels came out from the kitchen very quickly. The white sauce was very good. Dip it in the bread and it tastes even better. The mussels itself were very fresh and in my opinion had a decent amount for the half portion size. The girlfriend’s scallops was very fresh and portioned well. On the other hand my NY strip steak frites was sub-par. My first bite was met with a huge chunk of fat wth no meat. The second bite had an extremely bitter after taste. The taste you get when a meat is way too charred. Visually the steak looked fine but the after taste was unbearable. With this said, I decided to give my girlfriend a small piece to see if she would have the same reaction as myself. Sure enough she did. On a side note the salad was also extremely salty. Unfortunately, I had to call over the waiter and get them to send the dish back to the kitchen. The manager came over and presented me my options; I decided to swap my dish for the beef carbonnade. This dish came out in a minute and was much better then the steak. The beef carbonnade was tender and flavorful(a bit too salty). Overall service here is decent. I wish I did not encounter the experience I did with my original order. With that being said this restaurant did not really impress me. It seems like the lack of patrons at dinner time is reflective of their quality of food at least at dinner time. Not sure if I will be back for food.

So Disappointed! This used to be my go-to place. $ 11 onion soup is a stretch for any market, just because DC is overpriced doesn’t give you the right to charge whatever you think is the going rate. If it were the best onion soup ever, maybe. This rendition isn’t terrible but definitely doesn’t need onions prepared three ways, especially not mounded with long slices of raw scallions, who wants to eat that? $ 20 Pork Schnitzel Salad was recommended, sadly not well executed. In fairness I didn’t eat much of the greens after trying the pork — which was void of any salt, none on the meat before cooking and definitely no finishing salt. They served a grilled lemon but still needs salt. Sorry you want to charge me $ 20 for a salad I want my food seasoned properly. I went for the $ 23 steak salad instead — see pic. Ordered med-rare came med-well. The dressing was flat, blue cheese did what it could to add flavor but still, meh. Pretty sure they blanch the kale(which wasn’t done in salted water and tasted water logged) instead of using baby kale or something suitable for a salad. I get why you want to blanch it but the cooks aren’t executing nor are the chefs tasting what is hitting the window. While I can live with sub-par, overpriced food, what really gets me is the lack of follow up and manager presence when I’m spending north of $ 40 for a soup, ice tea and salad. Not only did no one ascertain my satisfaction, which was clearly questionable — I didn’t even see a manager on the floor during my 45 min visit. This is restaurant 101 guys. I’m not a confrontational person and truthfully, had I been given the chance to voice my opinion on lunch today I wouldn’t be sitting here writing this(hoping someone who cares is reading). The hostess on my way out has mastered the art of staring off into space or sleeping with her eyes open. The last line of defense failed when she just watched me leave, no smile, no thank you for joining us and certainly no — how was everything? While you may think this review is harsh, it’s 100% fair for the service and food I was offered. 1101 K should be on the market fairly soon I’d imagine. Great location! Thanks

Brasserie Beck, I’m coming back for you! It’s a shame that it took me this long to try Brasserie Beck, especially since the restaurant is about 2 block away from where I work. A kind and generous soul from work offered to buy me lunch here, and I was really, really excited to get my eat on. The lunch menu had so many delicious options — my heart was telling me to go for the mussels, but my head was telling me to get the veal bolognese papardelle pasta, so that I don’t make a mess and get mussel juice all over my business caj attire. I enjoyed the pasta, I truly did, but it wasn’t very memorable. I was a fan of the lemon & herb ricotta cheese that generously topped the pasta, but the rest of the dish was pretty underwhelming. Service was a little… odd. Though my co-worker and I showed up to the restaurant and ended our meal significantly before the lunch rush, our waitress was really trying to get us out of there. We were only ¾ way through our meal when she asked if she could clear our plates, haha. The mussels and frites seem to be the stars of the show at Brasserie Beck. I’ll definitely have to come back here again as I feel like I didn’t get a proper taste of what Brasserie Beck has to offer. Take proper note, Will C. Our next date night shall be here! :)

Had a wonderful dinner here with my boyfriend and roommate. Absolutely outstanding food. We’re already planning on coming back later this week. Food 5⁄5 We started with the Plateau à la Marcel which came with a Half Lobster, 6 Oysters, 3 Shrimp, 3 Clams, 6 Mussels, Calamari Salad. WOW. I’m allergic to lobster and shrimp, so I can’t speak to their quality, but my dining companions seemed enamored. The oysters(Wellfleet I believe) were wonderfully fresh. The squid in the Calamari salad was lightly dressed and perfectly cooked, which is hard to find. The clams were also great. The mussels were AMAZING. I was in Belgium and France just last month, and I think these were better than any I had while in Europe. We then shared a full order of the mussels in white wine. These were also amazing and really fresh. They came with French fries and three different mayonnaise based dipping sauces. Drinks 4⁄5 We had a couple cocktails and glasses of wine and were happy with all of them. One martini was a little watery, but besides that they were all good. Impressive wine and beer list is available. Service 3.5÷5 Service was good. We did ask for the check right before getting the mussels(one of us had to run and catch a train) and we didn’t receive it for another 15 – 20 minutes which was a little frustrating. Other than that, our waiter was polite and helpful. Ambiance 4⁄5 We sat outside which was really nice. It got a little chilly as it got later, but they had heat lamps scattered throughout which was greatly appreciated.

Very good, very different and interesting, which is something I like. The beef carbonadde, for example, was a take on beef stew, but interestingly served over a delicious vegetable purée. Many Belgian beers on tap, and unique and varied menu, hard to decide what to try. It is a bit in the pricey side, and I found the service to be a bit slow, but still very friendly and knowledgable. I would come again to try various items, such as the charcuterie

To steal a lesson from the three little bears, this place isn’t too hot or too cold but just right. And by right, I mean they are rightly average. I ordered a cup of their lobster bisque to start my meal. It tasted fine but I was severely disappointed in the lack of real lobster anywhere throughout the dish. I probably would’ve been happy with a picture of one for the price. My second course was the beet salad. Its a salad so there wasn’t much to it except that it had clean greens and beets were good. It help refresh my palette and help set me up for the main course. I was really excited to try the mussels since this is apparently what they’re known for here. We tried the one with fennel sausage and when it came out in the huge cast iron pan, I knew it was on. Except it was off because everything was miniature. The mussels were about the size of snails and the sausage pieces were like bite sizes for babies. The best part for me was probably soaking up all the sauce with the warm sourdough bread. We must’ve asked for 3 – 4 plates of bread. Ultimately, people will come here because there’s a huge amount of reviews and its good rating. I won’t discourage it but all the hype did set me up for a disappointing dining experience.

This is a great place for a birthday dinner! I actually went here for my friend’s 26th birthday dinner and I thought the food was good. I was the first one to enter the restaurant among the dinner party. Thus, I asked to be seated first. Our server asked for the birthday girl’s name. I spelled it out for him. They piped the birthday girl’s name with chocolate onto the cake. I really enjoyed the oyster selection. It was super meaty and fresh. The server was very elegant and professional when serving us. They also have daily specials! I really want to go in on a Saturday to try their dinner for two!

YUM! Went for my friend’s bday dinner and everything was delish! First off the bread basket is warm and oh so delicious! Perfect to mop up the broth of the Thai curry mussels! Friends loved the frites! I loved the unique sauces which were basil, garlic, and Thai curry. Oysters were fresh. I wasn’t super hungry so got the beet salad as an entrée and loved it! Tried bites of friends’ dishes: duck was good! Very tender. Bone marrow app was also really delicious. Lobster bisque had really good lobster flavor but was very watery. The chocolate cake at the end was so thick and so good! Had morsels of chocolate pieces inside which was a surprise! Overall a delicious meal where nothing disappointed!

If you’re looking for a classy restaurant in downtown DC, I highly recommend Brasserie Beck. I had the steak frites & loved every bite. The steak was a perfect«medium» with a lovely pink center. The fries were terrific, too, as they were crispy & flavorful.(I’m very picky about my fries!) The setting here is another big plus. We felt like we were in an upscale brasserie in Paris. I feel like I need to say something about the prices. I had no complaints whatsoever, as the food was well worth every penny. But you should check the menu online before you go, as many people will find the food pricey. We loved this place & will be going again soon!

Dinner here was a real treat. The menu is a bit pricey but don’t let that deter you. I really enjoyed my skillet roasted Amish chicken. It had a beautiful presentation and felt really unique. The chicken had a nice crispness to it and although it was a bit dry, the sauce was super tasty and readily fixed that(although I wish there was more of it!). The gruyère potato cake was good and definitely different but the gruyère wasn’t very noticeable. It didn’t taste dissimilar from just a standard potato cake. The caramelized carrots though were a nice touch and complemented everything else well. Given it was a Belgian restaurant, I couldn’t help but order french fries. The Belgian frites were large enough for two and a bargain at $ 5. They were super crispy, not too salty or oily, and felt very authentic. However, I was a little disappointed with how much of the portion was small crisps or crumbles with ultimately no potato inside. Also, I didn’t really care for the three accompanying aioli dips. Not that they were bad, just that the frites to me tasted better on their own.

This is the third of Robert Wiedmaier’s restaurants that I have visited — I’d previously visited BRABO(in Old Town Alexandria) and Marcel’s(in Foggy Bottom). I was impressed with this location as well, but it doesn’t have quite the same classy, chic décor that the others had. I think this location is slightly more casual and tailored to a different crowd — namely, the DC professional lunch crowd. I wandered into Brasserie Beck to have lunch while I was in downtown DC recently. I visited early enough(around 11:45am) so that it wasn’t quite crowded yet. I was promptly seated and the service was excellent throughout the meal. My water was constantly refilled and my complimentary bread basket was re-supplied. The host in front was also very polite and welcomed me warmly. I was stuck between ordering a traditional Belgian/French croque madame or the enticing salmon. Since I wanted to be productive the rest of the day, I decided to opt for the lighter option of the two and went with salmon. The Grilled Atlantic Samon was quite tasty and came with: «Everything» Spices, Spring Asparagus, Charred Onion Purée, Sherry Mustard Dill Aioli. Very delicious, though it was cooked a little differently than what I expected. I wasn’t sure the dill went well with the dish either, and the asparagus was a little under-cooked. Bottom Line: Wonderful service and very conveniently located in downtown DC, but the food wasn’t as amazing as I expected it would be and the atmosphere was a bit lacking. I would visit again, but I far prefer Robert Weidmaier’s other restaurants(namely Marcel’s and BRABO).
