This will be the last time I take a friend’s recommendation without first walking through a rental facility on my own.
1) If you expect humidity control with your climate control, look elsewhere. The upper levels aren’t dry, but if you get their special treatment and get a basement unit, it’s going to smell distinctly of mildew.
2) Clearly, they have issues because there are critter traps EVERYWHERE.
3) There was water leaking out of the bottom of a storage unit around the corner with a dead cockroach in it. Personally, I’ll take mice over cockroaches ANY day.
I let the manager on duty know that I didn’t have any options for right then — the movers had to put my stuff somewhere and back where it came from wasn’t going to work — but that I would be moving out shortly.
Really, find somewhere else.

There are better places and I have been in them. U Store It changed ownership while I have been there, but the problems remain the same. The online service is mediocre at best, and how do you feel when you get «reminders» about payments on the day of or after the payment is due? Sure, sure… it is my responsibility to remember, but when you offer a service and provide it in this way it sure looks like you want to get that late fee more than you want to advise your tenant to pay up. In addition, I have been told for months that they offer a military rate. In fact, it was the store manager that brought to my attention that «somehow» I was no longer paying that rate. So, the question that has to be asked, If you know I am supposed to get that rate, why are you charging me the higher rate? Answer: Refer to the comments about the «advanced notice.»
In short, go somewhere else. I will when I have the time to move out.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES STORE YOUR THINGS HERE!!! I had a until from August 2010 — January 2011 when I studied abroad in Barcelona. When I got back I had a HUGE infestation of mice and rats. There were FOUR DEAD RATS in the unit, two of which were IN my boxes. The rats chewed their way through every protective covering I had, on my couch, loveseat, mattress, box springs, chairs, etc. They urinated and defecated on everything. The insurance that you buy does not cover vermin and the storage facility is trying to fight me on their negligence. The manager said to me «well… rats are a problem here» as if I were supposed to know that and just assume the risk.
The staff is friendly and as long as there is nothing wrong, everything goes smoothly. But if you run into an issue, they get really nasty really quick. Go to Maryland where they keep their stuff, and yours, clean.

I saw there was only one review here, and since I’ve had a unit here for more than a year I hope this evens it out. I’ve ended up staying there for much longer than expected and so far I’m 100% happy with the experience. I like the fact that it has long opening hours and climate control. It’s a little more per month ($ 187) than I would like, but that’s DC. No mouses, no mishaps, easy to get in and out, clean and close.

Like mice? Well, let’s qualify this … Like mice droppings — not to use the word poop, feces — all over your clothes, dishes, pots and pans… I got the place for you!
I stored the entire content of my 1 bedroom and den condo at U-​Store-​It at the Petworth address because it was so conveniently located close to where I wanted to move. Their customer service was great initially, the staff there was friendly, professional and very helpful. The storage facility was newly renovated, seemed clean and my unit was close to the elevator. AND I got one free month… so not so bad.
The came the move … I hired movers and as they moved the stuff out of the storage they said they saw mice running around. I went to the front desk to alert them to the fact. The staff there told me they were aware of that for my unit and others on that floor already «but your stuff is OK, right». Well, when I unpacked my stuff at home I discovered while they had left the couches alone the mice had left droppings in every box they «visited» — I am assuming they only got to the bottom ones since only about ½ the boxes were affected. The little brown «pellets» were everywhere. One would think «rodents» happen… I contacted the place and they never returned any of my phone calls — it always went to voicemail — and they later told me they never got any of them. I then wrote them a letter which did get me an immediate call and the manager wanted me to read up that the mice would be not their responsibility I should just read my contract and that «this is why we have you get insurance». Needless to say insurance does not cover mouse infestation. He also told me that the front desk staff was mistaken that they were not aware that an issue existed with my unit… I will just leave it at that.
Soooo if you like some company for your belongings while you store them… chose this place. It is included!
