DC Supermarket

The DC Market has the best beer selection and prices you will find in the city. They have the widest beer selection I’ve ever seen at least anywhere in DC NE and SE, but the prices are also WAY lower than any where else. Can’t go wrong if you like beer. They also have a lot of wine, and the basics with groceries, but the prices are higher with groceries.

I never understand people who buy food at these places (paying 50% more than grocery stores charge for food brings you close enough to eating-​out prices), but this store had a much more comprehensive food selection than I would have imagined. If I ran out of cayenne pepper and lived down the street, it’d be nice to know I could find it here, but, obviously, trying to buy a whole meal’s worth of food at a corner store is still going to be prohibitively expensive.
The most bizarre thing about this place is the beer selection/​pricing. They had a decent stock of alright micros (nothing too exciting but quite a few DFH and Sierra Nevada six-​packs) for 8.99, which is a reasonable price. On the other hand, a 12-​pack of Budweiser ran a fucking unbelievable 12.99. That’s a bad enough price to justify the two-​star rating, since, really, all you should be buying at a place like this is beer anyway.

I have used a card at DC Supermarket twice, and twice I have been double charged. It is pretty clean and they do have a good variety of products, but if you go, use cash.

DC Supermarket isn’t the closest corner store to my place — it competes with Rite Aid and another corner mart — but I’m willing to walk an extra block or two to come here. Compared to the other two options, DC Supermarket is cleaner, has a better selection of food items (including some basic produce), and much, much friendlier staff. One of the owners gave me some great advice on catching mice, too! (Use peanut butter, not cheese.)

I’ve been going to this market since I moved to DC in October and I’m always surprised at just how much stuff they actually have. If you take your time and really look around you will see that they have all kinds of interesting cooking spices, mixes, and products that can be added to give simple foods some flavor. I’ve also been surprised at the amount of organic items this market carries including their organic vegetable and chicken broths which I use in almost everything I cook.
Since I’ve been going here several times a week for 9 months now, the owners all know me and welcome me when I enter. I also appreciate how when you put your basket on the cashier’s ledge they will start to read out the prices to the cashier and bag the items while you wait.
Its places like these that really make me feel like I’m part of a neighborhood which is very cool. Like most corner markets the prices here are higher but you can’t beat the convenience or the service at the big chains.
If you live in the area I would recommend this market and the one on 7^th street without a doubt.
