The Foundry has what I look for in a local art gallery. Local talent working in a variety of media properly presented. The artists represented are strong, dedicated, and sophisticated. It is the oldest artist-run co-op in Washington and has a bedrock feel to it. The first Friday openings are always fun and the wine is actually really good!

Foundry Gallery is an awesome gallery near the Dupont Circle area. I recently became a member of the gallery and cannot be happier with what it provides. This gallery is one of the oldest co-op galleries in the DC area, and the current location is at a prime spot.(Although the entrance is hard to spot.) There are wide varieties of artworks exhibited from photographs, paintings, to sculpture. I love the cozy friendly atmosphere, and it feels very different from those intimidating commercial galleries. My friends that visited the openings have all mentioned how they were ‘pleasantly surprised’ by how accessible the gallery felt. It’s a non-profit organization and the gallery is run by the artists themselves. When you walk in the receptionist will most likely be one of the artists. Most of the members are very friendly, active, engaging, and are willing to give wonderful feed back. If you are an emerging artist this is a great gallery to join, not only because you can consistently exhibit your works, but also because you can learn hands on on how a gallery functions by helping run the gallery.

The Foundry is not your typical art gallery, and that makes me happy. As opposed to the usual dry-as-milk-toast, cold and unwelcoming environment — this place is something special. Frequently, you’ll find a local artist exhibiting here. Only modern works are shown here, and they are usually pretty cool. The Foundry is run and funded by artists. That means are no restrictions on what they can and can’t exhibit. Many local artists get their jump start here. The guy whose opening I went to was just psyched to get the exposure. Since it is a non-profit, the Foundry also offers lectures and performances for all ages.
