I am ordering from Johnnys again… Why? Because they are awesome! Fried dumplings, combo lomein, sesame beef and everything els I’ve got the best!!! It’s old school delicious! And order steak and cheese… That is tight too!

Cheap, generous, made-to-order, American Chinese food. It’s quick and the person taking orders speaks incredible English. Good drunk food or for girls’ night in.

This general tao’s that I’m eating right now is so sub par that I almost took it back to get my money back. I wouldn’t completely warn you to never come here, but only if you have a jonesing for Chinese food as this is the nearest one to my office before Adam’s Morgan.

While not the most aesthetically pleasing interior or exterior, the food was quite good. I took the advice of others here and tried the General Tso’s chicken. The service was fast, and the chicken was better than the vast majority of take-out places around town. In short, don’t let the look of the place scare you off.

This is one of those Chinese take-out places that has many other things on their menu. We came here because the taco place on the other block was closed. My husband wanted Chinese, but since I wasn’t in the mood for that, I made the mistake of ordering a turkey sandwich. The turkey was a consistency I had never seen before, which made me think it came out of a can? Some yellow American cheese on top of mystery meat, really unappetizing and a waste of money. If I ever find myself here again, it will definitely be for Chinese food ONLY.

Please, DONOTGOTOTHISPLACE. The service is Awful, the food is sub par and to add insult to injury the woman tried to cheat me out of my change. After I brought it to her attention she emphatically argued with me about it and tried to convince me to believe something that was TOTALLYUNTRUE and after going over a basic math lesson with her and showing her that I wasn’t stupid she finally corrected the change but was still short five cents. It was all about the principle, she knew exactly what she was doing and deliberately tried to cheat me. DON’T WASTEYOURTIMEGOINGTHERE.

This place looks freaking terrifying, so it took me and my roommate about 7 months(and a few beers and a missed lunch) to man up and try this place despite it being across the street. WAITINGWAS A HUGEMISTAKE. EATTHERENOW. This place is actually great. Absolutely my favorite place for low-brow Chinese in DC. The food is standard takeout Chinese but not gross/oily/spoiled, which is usually the case in DC. The veggie lo mein and fried cheese wontons(no judging) are particularly good but everything that we have ever gotten has been pretty delicious(including the wings, which are SURPRISING solid). Bonus: You can watch your order being cooked fresh right through the bulletproof glass! Food is always ready within 10 minutes, and usually you will get some random diabetes-inducing flavored soda for free(like peach… who the hell drinks peach soda??). Also, the people taking orders speak impeccable English, so placing phone orders is super easy. Overall, my biggest problem with this place is I am eating there too often out of sheer laziness and I am afraid of gaining 25 lbs of delicious Chinese food weight. Johnny’s 4 life.

If you like drifters, you’ll love Johnny’s. What it lacks in ambience it makes up for with sheer square footage of bulletproof glass. But also, surprisingly good roasted pork fried rice. So just get it to go, and probably avoid eye contact with your fellow patrons, many of whom seem a bit off. Johnny’s is quick with the order, so you’ll be out the door before you know it.

Johnny’s is NOT a gourmet experience nor does it serve authentic Chinese food. Let’s get that out of the way first. It is a neighborhood take-out house that happens to have everything under the sun — Chinese, burgers, fries, gyros, chicken, subs, etc. The service is fast and efficient. The food is tasty for what it is and the prices very reasonable. I particularly liked their General Tso’s wings, which is what I ordered the first time I went there. Subsequent trips included fried rice, peppered beef, Szechuan beef and General Tso’s chicken. All of them are pretty decent for a place of this caliber. If you’re in the mood for some quick and cheap takeout food that will hit the spot, I highly recommend a visit.

I’m sure Mike Isabella is thrilled that this carryout has the same average rating as Graffiato. I live across the street and it satisfies a need: the f-my-job-and-f-my-fat-ass-I’m-getting-take-out-right-now need. The food is overly saucy and the dumplings are overly-doughy but the lady usually throws in a free soda for good measure and to make up for the man lying on the sidewalk out front screaming and convulsing. I’m not the richest girl in Columbia Heights, but I am the luckiest.

Update. Now that I go to this place about twice a month, its safe to say Johnny’s still kicks ass. Moving from 4 to 5 stars on account of how FAST they always make my food.(And also the cheese wontons are awesome!)

It’s a carryout that serves it’s purpose which is to feed you stomach for cheap. The food is decent, the food is cheap, the food will not give you food poisoning. I mean, what do you expect… it IS A CARRYOUTINDC. So, it’s a late night, you’re in Columbia Heights, you want something quick, cheap and know it’ll do the job of curing your hunger pains, then this is the place to go!

Searching for a cheap place to eat late in DC was getting frustrating until we stumbled upon Johnny’s. Sign said«Subs, Chicken, Chinese», Yep, that’ll do. We stopped in and ordered Chinese. They had an assortment of other American food, plus Gyros, etc. The place isn’t extremely clean or organized and the signs look like they’re from the 80’s. There were quite a few strange, loud, and rude DC folk wandering about and inside being rude to the people who worked there. We were thinking Ok this is gonna be really bad, or surprisingly good. We were happily surprised; it was really good! My teriyaki chicken was mixed with peppers and onions — GREAT! Slightly spicy and flavorful. I never eat Chinese leftovers because I think they get gross, but I ate all of this the next day. There wasn’t enough chicken in the mix though. My boyfriend also enjoyed his General Tso’s chicken. A little less than $ 20 for our two dishes, which came with two white rices, I also got a fountain lemonade(bad, don’t get it, tastes like melted artificial candy)… so a decent price for all that. I’d def get take-out if ever in that part of the city again.

I hate to say this but I have not and will not EVER go back to Johnny’s. it was the most convenient and delicious Chinese take out place ever… Until— I saw a cockroach having fun and running around on the menu on the wall. I notified the lady at the register and she didn’t seem to care… I wish I never saw that big nasty roach in there… Eww… Bye bye Johnny’s… Lol

Cheap good Chinese food. My roommate and I just moved into the neighborhood a few weeks back and decided we just had to try Johnnys sooner rather than later. Well after a few beers near the Hill, we decided that last night was the night. Totally good. And I am pretty sure they make it when you order it because it took awhile(which is okay by me)

I live not too far from here. I am pretty happy with this place although its nothing particularly amazing. The food is quality, and the delivery is usually pretty prompt. They are like a lot of ‘Chinese’ food places these days. They have the usual fried rices and general tso’s, but they also have subs and sandwiches. Their cold cut is not bad and certainly hits the spot some nights. I am also a fan of the General’s Chicken and General’s Tofu. If you are looking for a quick delivery of something salty and tasty this is the place to go. I highly advise keeping the menu around if at all possible, they have coupons on it ranging from a free egg roll to a free order of General Tso’s Chicken depending on how much you order. They never collect the coupons but you are not going to get the free stuff unless you know to ask.

Yeahhhhhh, NO! The food is terrible, the store is dirty, and the people who stand outside are crazy. I went there drunk, and it was still terrible. Never again. Pay a bit more, go to Thaitannic or Gloria’s Pupuseria down the street for cheap eats(that you can actually eat).

I live across the street and stare at this place every time I walk by… after a night of partying, my roommate and I decided to give it a shot. The menu is gigantic! They have just about everything under the sun… so if you are looking for super cheap, low-to-mid quality fried chicken and rice. For $ 4 I got 4 fried chicken wings and fried rice… suremy stomach nearly exploded an hour later, but it was good chicken. Try their mambo sauce.
