First time here as I live just around the block. Not impressed. On a cold day, I decided to order their Tagliatelle with their bolognese sauce. Clearly they don’t know what tagliatelle is or bolognese as I got just boring fettuccine pasta and a minuscule amount of bolognese sauce. Wish they could have been better since they have a prime location.

Always excellent! Pasta is cooked al dente, the servers are attentive, sauces are excellent. What more do you need? We eat here every time we visit DC.

J’y suis aller pour New Years. Bonne location, service rapide. Assez cher pour la qualité, service rapide mais assez«presser» ambiance assez vieux. Menu special nouvel an correcte. Bémols sur la qualité de la nourriture qui pourrais être plus raffiné pour le prix.

We visited this restaurant hopping to have our previous experience just two years ago which was excellent. This time not so much. When ordering beets salad the norm is for it to be warm. Not at La Tomate and to make it worst the goat cheese was replaced by some white shaved something. My partner ordered the tagliatelle but was served fettuccine the box kind. I know this restaurant is not a trattoria but tagliatelle usually is fresh made. For our next visit to DC this restaurant will be out of our list.

I’m not sure why everyone is just«meh» about the food. I thought this was amazing. It’s rare that I LOVE Italian food, but that’s exactly what happened when I ate here. I ordered the rigatoni with duck ragout, and it was FAN. TAS. TIC. The pasta was so fresh and flavorful, and the duck plus sauce was to die for. For dessert I ordered the ricotta cheesecake, which was also amazing. I took both home as leftovers for my husband, and he was also wowed. He doesn’t even like Italian food all that much. Service was great, price was typical. Knocking them down a star because the bathroom(at least the women’s) was a little gross.

I just had dinner here tonight and it was actually quite delicious! It was a quick Sunday night dinner so I went straight for a pasta entrée! The service was very friendly and patient with us taking our time to order! Water and bread on the table immediately. We got there around 7 and it was fairly empty, then surprisingly filled up by 8(on a Sunday!) I got the duck rigatoni… Was excellent and delicious! They come around and give you fresh parmesiano cheese to sprinkle on. The pasta was perfectly al dente! It went well with my glass of Cabernet. Then, to cap off the meal we got 2 desserts. We got the sorbet trio and this chocolate ice cream dish. Both were excellent. The manager came around to pour us water and ask us how the meal was in a very friendly/low key manner. Great touch I recommend this place for some good causal Italian dining!(It’s in DuPont btw)

This place was different than what I had expected looking from the outside. It is a very classic, quiet, but lively. The waiters were all very professional, kind, and knew when to ask for menu, check, water, or anything. I really enjoyed their seafood linguine. Delicious! Their before-meal bread was fabulous too. Yummy! A little pricey though — Would love to try their pizza or the Penne pasta. Everything looked really good when I turned left and right. Pleasant lunch experience.

Brunch review: La Tomate, not exactly hopping for brunch at 11:30 on a Sunday morning so we were given the pick of tables on the patio. The waiter promptly gave us menus and brought us a basket of delicious bread with olives baked in(SOGOOD). The brunch menu is disappointingly short beyond standard brunch drinks, yes they have bottomless mimosas for $ 15 — but they have only five or six menu options. I opted for the salmon Benedict which was perfectly portioned and cooked. It was extremely fresh. My friend ordered the burger which was a huge portion served with breakfast potatoes and a side salad. Both dishes were great. I’m knocking off one star because we certainly found the bottom of our mimosas many times. Given how slow it was we waited fairly long periods between drinks. Also the limited selection was a negative, great food, just limited options for brunch. I would certainly come back for brunch or give dinner a try.

I have always been fond of this place, which has been a block and a half from my office for nearly thirty years; a nice place for the occasional lunch a cut above the normal place where I might go with a friend, or even for an occasional dinner. Today when we wanted a good place to take our long-time secretary for a goodbye lunch, it was my suggestion that we come here. Much of the food was fine and it was very pleasant sitting outside on their patio, but one of the service experiences was so horrifying that the place deserves this negative review. I was disappointed that a number of the beers on the menu were not available today. I had the pork medallions from the regular menu, which were very nice, served on beds of squash with a pleasantly spicy cube of something or other; two of my colleagues had pasta dishes from the lunch special menu, and although the colleague with the squid ink pasta was pleased, the colleague who got the ravioli dish felt that they were greasy. The guest of honor was pleased by her«local» burger. But one of my colleagues, who got a dish identified as flat bread with prosciutto, was displeased that the«flat bread» turned out to be a plain flour tortilla; I confess I rather liked the sample I had of her dish. But the bad part was at the end; my legal colleagues agreed that we would split the bill four ways, and we gave in four credit cards. But the waiter lost one of the credit cards on the way to the credit card machine. He was a bit of a jerk about it, repeatedly questioning my colleague about whether she had REALLY put it her card. And he made a show of looking through his pocket for the card but didn’t look very hard. Instead, he and other restaurant staff walked around looking for the credit card, to the point of repeatedly picking up one of the tables as if to see if the card was under its legs. We eventually left, and my colleague had to decide whether to cancel the card(to which many of her regular bills are set for autopay). Just before she did that, she got a call telling her that the card had been found — under OUR table. Now that card was certainly not under our table — apparently it had been lost elsewhere in the restaurant and the staff couldn’t bear to be honest about where and how they had misplaced it. So, I don’t expect I’ll be back again.

Very nice Al fresco meal for nine of us. Aperitifs, salads, entrees, desserts & coffee along with a couple of pousse cafes. Server was knowledgeable of specials — moderately priced to boot. I had the mixed seafood grill as did one other. Great atmosphere, and the cooperative weather made for a bonus. $ 560(including tip) for a very pleasant dining experience.

First time in DC and my wife and I are walking along Connecticut looking for dinner and we stumbled upon La Tomato and it looked promising. As we stepped inside we were quickly seated and served by an attentive staff. After placing our order, our beverage, salad, main courses and dessert all arrived quickly and the presentation and flavor of the dishes were excellent. Overall, a very nice dining experience!

Great food. Great service. They blew it on an eggplant dish but comped us on another entrée then gave us free Lemoncello and Grappa. Can’t wait to return

La Tomate is a place that you can come for some solid Italian food. I wouldn’t say that there is anything necessarily outstanding or mind-blowing here, but the food is usually consistently good. Unfortunately it’s a little expensive for what it is. There are definitely other places around town where you can get a stellar Italian meal that isn’t priced this high. I’d recommend their squid-ink pasta if you dine here, and definitely pull some items from the prosciutto bar menu.

Boring, expensive and small portions. I had a bowl of soup. It was less than a cups worth of soup, cold and tasteless. When I did not eat the soup and canceled my entrée, no one asked if there was a problem. Service was lacking. Atmosphere was blah, but extremely noisy. With so many good places to eat in DC, why bother going here.

This will be my first and last time going here to eat for brunch. My friends and I(4 of us in total) wanted to try a new brunch place in the city. They offer bottomless mimosas for $ 15(standard pricing) but they were lacking in service. We had to wait almost 15 minutes before a waiter came by to refill our glasses. They were not attentive at all. We had to ask for the bread. Then ask for the olive oil. etc. The prosciutto is delicious but not worth the $ 14. Although the food was delicious it was not worth the 45 minute after ordering. Great location in DuPont which is sad. The only redeeming quality was the café attached it.

Great location, but pretty dire service and food. Had to ask for a menu, bread came out around when you would expect the meal. It was cold and I had to ask for olive oil. The seared tuna salad I ordered tasted like it had been sat in the fridge for quite a while. Water was never refreshed and they took my plate away without asking at the end of the meal. Overpriced, disappointing and unfriendly.

We had a delicious Valentine’s Day dinner here. We weren’t planning on coming here but our reservation fell through up the street. We were very pleased with the service and the quality and flavor of the food. The boar ragu was among the best things I have eaten in a while and the panna cotta was delicious! The pasta in the ragu was cooked perfectly. We are foodies and were impressed. I’ve been to La Tomate a few different times on a whim. It’s one of those places that you can reliably drop in, have a tasty dinner without a fuss, and leave feeling satisfied.

The location is excellent, the décor is pleasant and the food is ok. My husband and I stopped in some evening. The service was quite good, but we were a bit non plussed by the food. We started by bruschettas, which were quite good. It was 4 pieces of 2 different flavors, and we enjoyed them. Between the appetizer and our main course of pasta, we munched on bread and olive oil. The olive oil tasted a bit weird, not quite right. And if you are an Italian restaurant with a French name, I’m sorry but you really have to up your game on bread. It was quite disappointing. Just order your bread from le pain quotidien and it will be a huge step up. Then the pasta came, squid ink pasta for me and carbonara for my husband. They were good, but not excellent. So to summarize, I wouldn’t tell you not to go, but I think there are better options nearby.

I find myself wanting to give place 3.5 stars like I did last time. The service is solid, and he did a great job accommodating our table of 7 on Saturday night passed the masses of the dinner crowd. We were here around 9:15 as walk-ins; seated on the second floor in an alcove where they pushed three tables together. For my dinner I ordered the squid ink ternette with shrimp, shiitake mushrooms, and some other stuff. I liked the dish. I would order it again, however, I feel some of the flavors are a little overwhelming than others. Le Tomate is good for the mixed crowd. Bring your parents here for a dinner, a date, or go casual. It’s not pretentious and prices are between $ 7 – 25. All pasta dishes are under $ 20, and would recommend those over the entrees. Bön Appetit!
