Buying a mattress is usually horrible; the stakes are high considering you’ll be sleeping on that beast every night, and the purchase typically involves dropping a hefty stack of bills («investment items» and all that).
Billie at Mattress Discounters makes this experience easy, informed and cost effective. Billie broke through my frosty don’t-pitch-me demeanor. First she asked about my needs and price range, then thoughtfully explained the pros and cons of each type of mattress, from longevity to price to sleeping position and body temperature. I was able to find a great mattress in ten minutes as well as a waterproof cover.
The delivery was flawless. The mattress arrived on time and in perfect condition, and this was after the big 2016 blizzard. The delivery folks carried it up to my room. (Just moved back to DC!!! :D)
Billie was so organized and made sure everything went according to plan. More than that, it was wonderful to work with someone who struck me as a genuinely nice person and who has worked in mattress sales for many years. It really was more of a conversation than the usual harried sales pressure situation. I’d recommend this spot to anyone in DC looking for knowledgable service and efficient delivery.

All in all I had a really positive experience with the Columbia Heights Mattress Discounters. Billie was great at showing me around to different models and making recommendations based on what I liked. She professionally discussed financing options with me and while there was definitely a sales push, she was in no way overbearing which I appreciated. She got me set up on a payment plan and even got the approval to match a lower price that I found elsewhere.
As for the delivery, the drivers were professional and courteous. They called twenty minutes before arrival to let me know they were on their way. They took my old frame down to the dumpster for me even though they weren’t required to do so. There was a problem with the frame that I ordered not being loaded on the truck, so we had to call the corporate delivery call center. They wanted to postpone delivery of the frame for the next day and weren’t very nice about it, blaming the store for the mistake when it was clearly their mistake. When the drivers saw this exchange taking place, they were able to find a frame and get my new bed set up the same day. Very much appreciated.

Walked in to the Mattress Discounter on a Tuesday evening needing a mattress relatively soon and meet the manager on duty. (Sidebar: Can you be a manager if you are the only one working the store?) I had some strict requirements for a «Next Bed» (Wall bed, Murphy bed, etc) and the gentleman understood and guided me properly. He took his time to explain the process and what I should be looking for in a mattress. I give the experiences a good 4 out of 5. So why not the fifth star? There was a little bit of a hard sell at the end of the meeting but I totally understand that. What I do not understand was the website sited free home delivery but I was going be charged in the store. Secondly the online store was fifty dollars less of the mattress in the store. There was a lower sales tax online than the DC which made a difference. $ 200 is enough to make me not buy in the store but it is a good experience.
