Prego is our go-to place! Always great portions and consistently delicious. Don’t go here for the experience, go for the food!

Delicious sandwiches! The Prego Special(giant Italian hoagie) is delightful, and there’s great people-watching from the patio out front. Highly recommend for hungry Eastern Market visitors!

This is my breakfast spot. I always order an egg, sausage, and cheese on rye bread and it is always just right. The coffee is good too. I haven’t had anything else because I like my usual order so much but the pesto sandwiches are calling me.

NOT A SINGLESOLITARYTHINGSPECIALABOUTTHISPLACE. They serve soup, deli sandwiches, and offers small conveniences of random necessities. They had an odd collections of dressings. For one they had on sale Panera Bread balsamic vinaigrette salad dressing for $ 5.49. Then right beside that, they offered Organicville gluten free dressings. I don’t know — it was just really random what they had on their shelves for sale. Some of them were gathering dust. This is a small space with limited table seating, so I was literally sitting next to the salad dressing within arm reach of me. My sandwich I got is a huge portion with all varying pricings from $ 5-$ 6.50. Soup was varying pricing too depending on what size you got and what kind it was. I settled up with the tomato basil. I can’t say I enjoyed the after taste of that soup… sandwich I got was ok and had a lot of deli meat on it. Overall thought of the place — come in here if you want a sandwich or a quick drink to go. It isn’t fantastic, and it is far from anything special. It is your basic of the basic delicatessen.

We happened upon this deli during our visit to Washington. We had no idea what to expect. Sandwiches were great! The prices were affordable too. Great experience.

I go to Prego about once a year and always think I need to go more often until my visit here today. There are always people in the store getting their sandwiches and some of them are good(like the #4). However, today I ordered the Spicy Chicken panini and some of the chicken I could not chew because the skin was still on the chicken and was too much like rubber. Meat already grosses me out and this put me over the edge. It will be a LONG time until I can go back here as much as I want to support a local Capitol Hill deli shop.

When I think of a deli, I think of freshly sliced meats and cheeses. For that reason, I do not consider Prego a deli. It’s more of a sandwich place and honestly, a pretty ordinary one. I ordered the turkey and Brie panini. The meat looked and tasted as if it had been taken out of a grocery store package. The caramelized onions were weird(I ended up taking them off) and the bread was lackluster. It was very similar the turkey and Brie at Cosi– only not as good. I looked at a couple of cold cut sandwiches other patrons had and was unimpressed. Next time I’m going to Mother Ruckers.

This is a basic deli, lots of specialty chips when you walk in. The folks behind the counter aren’t especially friendly. I ordered a turkey with bacon panini and it was on the same ciabatta bread that Costco sells! Really!!! They did have a yummy onion jam type of thing on it that I liked… which is the reason I gave them three stars instead of two. They have a kids cheese sandwich, but don’t have a good selection of chips for a child’s palate. My daughter would have liked cheeto’s, but they only had the spicy variety. Overall not super impressed. We were fed.

I had an awesome experience at Prego yesterday! Service was friendly and PROMPT and they turn out a delicious product! My partner, who is a hoagie aficionado, was satisfied… that alone is worthy of 4 stars in my book. The pastrami was delicious, and his turkey + veggie creation was great too(of course I tried it). The prices are very reasonable, to top it all off. I foresee grabbing sandwiches at Prego to take to Nats games all summer long! Woo!

Excellent tomato basil soup, incredibly filling cheese sandwich, lots of specialty sodas and juice drinks. They’re right across the street from Eastern Market.

When I think America, I think an Italian deli run by koreans, that writes a formal note of apology to customers when prices go up a few cents. …but that’s only because of Prego. On your next hung over morning, walk on over to Eastern Market. Go talk to Mr. Kim, and order yourself a breakfast sandwich. My go-to move is a sausage bacon egg and cheese on a croissant, with«spicy» sauce aka sriracha. Sometimes with some lettuce and tomato if I’m feeling fresh. Then, I walk over to the fridge and grab a Nantucket nectar, and while I am waiting for my sandwich I marvel at the random grocery items around the place. Then, outside to sit at a table and make friends with a stranger’s dog. …as one does in Eastern Market.

Super fast, super delicious. A wide range of options to create your own master piece. Plenty of drinks and snack options(chips, crackers, etc.) They even have your basic groceries like pasta, cooking spices, oils, sauces, ect. A neighborhood go-to!

My go-to spot for lunch sandwiches. I have yet to find an over the counter BLT that stands up to Prego’s; especially for $ 5.00! The egg salad– really delicious but messy to eat. The steak and cheese– good but not great. also messy to eat. The tuna salad– too flavor-safe for my liking. Most would be content with it. IMO, this place stands out as a tremendous value with better than average sandwich/chip options compared to the Cosi and Sizzling alternatives. I’m ok with not everyone liking this gem. The less people there at lunchtime means the less time I have to wait in line:)

We’ve been going here pretty consistently for their breakfast sandwiches on weekends. My boyfriend gets the steak, egg, and cheese on a bagel while I get the bacon, egg, and cheese on whole wheat toast. We both love it! A little pricey, but worth it. I’ve also gotten a BLT here and LOVED it — I’ve never had so much bacon on a BLT!

Best sandwiches ever! Mr. Kim must be used to picky customers because he asks all the right questions to put together the best possible sandwich for you. The deli is pricey but worth the visit.

Need a huge, delicious sandwich? This place has you covered. Delicious made-to-order, and they don’t skimp. Great lazy Sunday meal option. I usually can’t eat all of it so then I have the other half the next day for lunch.

Probably the most underrated place in DC. My friends and I go there almost every weekend. Amazing breakfast sandwiches. I’m not sure what they do but their bacon is one of a kind. If you get a sub get the soft roll toasted. Number 4 is great too. One of my favorites.

When you think about an Italian Deli, you think about A Litteri’s and — possibly — Taylor’s Deli. The idea is to have great slices of cured meat(ideally imported) and a small selection of hard to find imported food items(pasta, sauces, etc.). Sadly, Prego falls short on both characteristics. First, the pre-sliced sandwich meat is probably from Costco. Unlike«real» Italian deli’s, Prego doesn’t even display the slabs of meat. Second, the store is hardly an Italian market. It’s stocked with ice cream, chips, and junk food. Sure, there are a few cans of tomato sauce and boxes of pasta but you could find them just as easily at the 14th Safeway. If you wanted a quick sandwich, Prego is a viable choice. But don’t expect to find an authentic Italian deli here. [Original Visit: July 16, 2010]

Nearly every weekend afternoon, we find ourselves craving Prego — the sandwiches, yes, but more so the lazy experience itself. This little sub shop is the perfect place to loaf to in flip flops and jeans, to sit outside in the sun, reading the Hill Rag, eating slowly and watching people pushing baby strollers and walking dogs past the vendors of Eastern Market. The line’s never too long, and we don’t have to deal with a waiter bugging us when we just want to chill. That sweet feeling of indulgence sets in when we sit back in the metal chairs, rip open the little bags of kettle chips and pop the tops off our iced tea and lemonade. We walk away full and happy and not too much poorer, amused and relaxed and completely satisfied.
