The first time I came across Pepitos was when I first moved into Columbia Heights. I didn’t know where to eat but, I was starving and tired from moving and arranging my place. So, after my mother and I walked in and out of restaurants we seen Pepitos. It smelled good in there and we came to an agreement that we would give this place a try. We ordered the steak w/onions, rice, and re fried beans and a nice big cup of lemonade. I don’t know if it was because we were sooo hungry that day but the meal was DELICIOUS!!! The steak was seasoned right and was tender. In addition, the lemonade was very good and sweet just how I like it. However, all the other times I ordered the steak meal, it never came close to the first time I had it. The steak was always too tough/over cooked :-/ I come across two other favorites such as their tacos(yum! so good) and their chicken enchiladas(I used to tear this meal up all the time). One con that I can think off the top of my head is that the rice isn’t really good. For one, its too hard and it tastes very plain. Add some vegetables in that joint or something!!! :-)

Still make a great taco — the gringo chicken is my favorite. This restaurant is still open as I stopped in today for lunch. I think they just had to change their name as they were about to be sued over the pepito’s name I believe. The food, seating, etc has not changed. Definitely worth checking out if you want cheap, tasty tacos in Adams Morgan…

This place is sooo delicious!!! I am from California, and I am picky when it comes to quality mexican food. Chipotle and Baja Fresh are disgusting– Tacos Pepitos is quality. The tacos are amazing, as are the burritos. Carne asada is really yummy! The people here are so nice, and delivery is super inexpensive. Definitely order. p. s. it is NOTCLOSED– like the title says! I just ordered there tonight!

I had walked by this place for years before deciding to try it after reading some shining reviews. Since I finally tried Pepito’s, I’ve been grabbing take-out from there once or twice per week. They have some of my favorite tacos in the DC metro area outside of those at Asylum(tex-mex style) and those at El Paso Café in Arlington(the BEST tex-mex restaurant in the DC metro area). You can choose from about 5 different types of meat(chicken, carnitas, beef, beef tongue, and I can’t remember the other(s)) and have your tacos prepared authentic or gringo style. Authentic is two tortillas with meat, onions and cilantro with a lime on the side. Gringo is a single tortilla with meat, lettuce, tomato, onion, and cheese with a lime on the side. I like both styles and usually get chicken and carnitas tacos. The tacos are loaded with so much meat that two are enough to fill me up. There is a toppings bar with pico de gallo, red taco sauce, and green salsa. The baked goods, such as the donuts, cakes, and other items are delicious. I need to try their flautas and some of the other menu items, but the tacos are so good that I order them every time. I’ve tried Taqueria Districto Federale which I thought was only OK, and prefer the tacos at Pepito’s.

If you’re in the mood for a nice, tender tounge session, this is the spot for you. Where Super Tacos excels is with their lengua(beef tongue) tacos. Admittedly, this might might sound disgusting, but surprisingly it makes for a delectable experience. While tongue is always tender, Super Tacos gets extra points for avoiding any bumps in their selected meat. Furthermore, the sauteed onions, cilantro, and seasonings used here(a standard in all of the tacos they make here) actually work with the lengua tacos(not as much with the al pastor tacos). Finally, it should be noted that the tacos here are quite cheap. So, if you find yourself in Adams Morgan, and you want tongue, avoid all the questionable bars and slide on down to Super Tacos for a solid meal.

Mmm… delicious tacos! I was even more impressed with this place after my last visit on Sunday. Came here on a little post-brunch excursion with a fine group of fellow Unilocalers(yes, that’s right, we went AFTER we’d already had brunch… gotta break in the stomach for Thanksgiving, right?) Actually, to be fair, I’d had my fill at brunch, but I couldn’t imagine passing up the opportunity for tacos while I was out and already so close! This time, I opted for the leguna tacos(beef tongue)… which was a popular choice of the day! I had planned on eating my take-out later that day but wound up going somewhere else for dinner. But that left me with a pretty fantastic meal to look forward to at lunch today(and what a better way to rid oneself of a case of the Mondays!) Of the tacos I’ve tried from here, the leguna tacos are by far my favorite. They even kept well and were deliciously tender even as left-overs! I also had split the horchata with Jaclyn S… very good indeed. Though, word of warning… it’s very sweet and also very large, so unless you have a serious sweet tooth, there is plenty to share and sharing is advised. Hmm… just writing about this now makes me hungry for more tacos. I already can’t wait for my next trip back here!

Pretty good for the price. I like the feel of the place and my queso fundido lasted me for three meals. Not bad for $ 8. The tortillas are homemade corn, they have pickled carrots & jalapenos with their(very fresh) salsa, and offer a decent vegetarian selection. However, I think it’s generally better suited for meat-eating types like myself. If you’re in the area, hungry for a non-sandwich or non-pastry snack, this is definitely a good(and cheap!) alternative. Also… I don’t think it’s closed… saw it open just a few days ago…

We only came here for a couple of tacos, a huarache, and horchata/agua fresca, but it was really good, and I’ll definitely go back. The huarache isn’t worth having again, but the tacos definitely are.(We had al pastor.) If this place were in San Francisco, you wouldn’t think twice about it, and in Chicago it wouldn’t beat the taquerias in the Ukrainian Village, but I don’t know of any place comparable in DC. Oh yeah– no seats other than a handful of stools by the window.

Just a note – the owner had to change the sign on the front because of some conflict with another Pepito’s restaurant in Maryland. So the sign now says«Super Tacos»(not Pepito’s) out front. But it’s the same restaurant.

I have never actually been to the bakery itself — but I get the taco delivery all the time — SOGOOD! You can order meats by the pound and they are delivered with warm tortillas, chopped onions and cilantro, lime slices and salsas. The lengua and carne asada are great — the carnitas, chicken and al pastor are also pretty good. The horchata has something a little funky going on, but I still order it every time! Not only is the food really tasty, but they deliver it relatively quickly and it’s a good deal. If you’re looking for some legit Mexican food(not Salvadoran!!!) in DC, this is a great start.

I am a HUGE fan of Mexican food, even when it sucks, but I am happy to say that Tacos Pepitos is really pretty delicious Mexican take-out. You can try to snag a seat at the place itself but even better is to get it delivered… the Viva Mexico is huge, cheap, and awesome. It’s big enough to have leftovers so I’d start with the tamale since they aren’t as good the next day. I’m not a lover of horchata but friends who are say it’s not the best here– the rest of the drinks, on the other hand, are muy delicioso.

I love the horchata, I love their burros, and I especially love their giant effin’ donuts drenched in sugar(and because of this, my dentist loves ME).

One of the reasons I miss living in Adams Morgan. Tacos Pepitos crushes! EVERY meal I ever had from here was delicious, and SO cheap! The tacos and burritos are money, but my fave was the Flautitas, served with some Guac/rice/beans and sprinkled with delicious oaxaca cheese. Perfect lunch for like 4 bucks.

In Washington DC, finding truly authentic Mexican food is a challenge on par with say, finding the DC equivalent of the Greenwich Village Marc Jacobs flagship store . In Tacos Pepitos Bakery 2(what ever happened Tacos Pepitos Bakery 1?) we have an answer to that challenge. You know a place has ‘real’ mexican food when there is a crowd of Mexican day laborers hanging outside of it. Truly nothing else could provide better street cred. Now onto the food itself — this joint is tiny but clean and has an extensive menu that stretches high all around the wall. Get the tacos. And get them in multiple meats(fish, two kinds of pork, beef, chicken). Then dress them up how you like with hot sauce, salsa verde, or a variety of other delicious saucy options. Also get the horchata — it’s awesome, served icy cold, and huge. Then be prepared for the indigestion that results from gorging yourself sick. This stuff is delicious. HOTUPDATE: I just went here(now Supertacos & Bakery) again and tried a couple ‘Lengua’ tacos — that would be beef tongue. I’d like to report that they rocked. That is all.

I’ve probably passed here a thousand times and since it said Bakery and I’m not fond of Mexican pastries I kept it moving. But then I was told they have tacos. They indeed have tacos for $ 2.75 each and much more. Since I had just eaten at Teasim, I decided that I would take it easy and just ordered two tacos. Boy was I amazed when there was so much meat sitting on those two corn tortilla shells. This would not be a light snack but my dinner. The carnitas were moist and flavor and when I had the first taste of the carne asada I smiled. My mouth was certainly happy. (I’m getting much closer to a great taco. So thanks to our fearless leader Miriam I stopped into Pepito’s. She was right on.)

Mmmmmmmmmmmexican food! This place was yummy. We got a al pastor burrito, a carne asada taco, and two chicken(gringo) tacos. I know why they call them the gringo now — they were a little taco bell-ish, but the chicken was amazing. The carne asada taco was great as was the burrito, although they only have refried beans it seems. I am so excited to find this place and know that there’s pretty good Mexican nearby!

Pepito’s rocks. The tamales oaxaqanos(sp?) are amazing, and it’s huge, and it’s probably like $ 4. This place is just amazing; I think it’s my favorite Mexican food in the city. There are only about 4 stools inside, so you might have to do take-out, but I’ve always been able to get a stool(b/c most people do in face do take-out). Even if the most authentic Mexican you’ve ever had is Taco Bell, I still think you can appreciate Pepito’s. A lot of the Unilocalers say«don’t expect anything fancy» — I’d say that a menu with like 30 options, and about 5 different kinds of homemade salsa is actually kinda fancy… I’d choose this over Chipotle(which, I believe is owned by McDonald’s just so you know) every single time! UPDATE(Sep. 2009 — overdue) … It’s not actually«CLOSED», they just changed the name, and I still love this place. Be warned though — you might think it’s gonna be a cheap dinner, I often spend about $ 15/dinner(but I just can’t stop myself from ordering several things…

You will not find the sleek, galvanized steel touches of Chipotle at Pepito’s. And unless you’re lucky enough to snag one of the four chairs at the counter in the window, you’ll probably be forced to take your burritos and tacos to go. Still, if authentic Mexican taqueria fare is what you’re after, you should not miss this little Adams Morgan spot. The«Burrito Ilegal» is a perfectly toasted tortilla filled with savory carne asada(beef), chunky guacamole, sour cream and lettuce. It comes with chips and queso and costs $ 6.75. Chicken tacos are pretty good. For great tacos, see Taqueria Nacionale. The Mexican pastries in the cabinet at Pepito’s didn’t tempt me, but if you’re a fan of pasteles, you’ll want to consider getting your fix here. The selection is wide and I saw many a customer come in to fetch them. The absence of plantains and yucca(both of which I love) on the menu lead me to believe that this place is actually Mexican. I can’t wait to come back for the tortas!
